Call to Worship One: Sing! Sing unto the Lord! All: Let’s make a joyful noise unto the Lord! Let’s worship God with gladness. One: We were made to worship! So, we come into God’s house with singing! All: You are the only True and Wise God! You are worthy to be praised! One: As it was in the beginning, Your Wisdom is always at work in the world — doing a new thing. All: Thank you God, for another day to praise! One: I was glad when they said unto me: let us go into the house of the Lord! All: Because one day in your house is better than a thousand anywhere else! All praises be to our Great God! Amen.
The Spoken Word “One Day” Psalm 84 Rev. Eleanor L. Colvin Sermon Notes Key Scriptures: Psalm 84:1-2 – How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of hosts! My soul longs, indeed it faints for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh sing for joy to the living God. Psalm 84:4 – Happy are those who live in your house, ever singing your praise. Psalm 84:10-12 – For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than live in the tents of wickedness … O Lord of hosts, happy is everyone who trusts in you. 1 Kings 8:6 – The priests then brought the ark of the Lord’s covenant to its place in the inner sanctuary of the temple, the Most Holy Place, and put it beneath the wings of the cherubim.
1 Kings 8:23-29 – Lord, the God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven above or on earth below—you who keep your covenant of love with your servants who continue wholeheartedly in your way … Hear the cry and the prayer that your servant is praying in your presence this day. May your eyes be open toward this temple night and day, this place of which you said, ‘My Name shall be there,’ so that you will hear the prayer your servant prays toward this place. Key Questions: 1. The Psalmist speaks of a desperate desire to be in the House of the Lord. Many of us have felt this way because of the ways COVID-19 has impacted our worship lives. What have you missed most about prepandemic worship? 2.Is anything currently competing with your worship? Psalm 84:10 says “a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere.” What is your “elsewhere?” 3.1 Kings 8 paints a picture of the Ark of the Covenant, which contained God’s law and promises for the people, being carried into the temple. Beyond the church, where do you carry the promises of God? _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________
