Call to Worship/Advent Reading One Voice: We light one candle for peace. Because the world is broken and the wait is long, but we refuse to be frozen by fear or anger or uncertainty. Peace comes in fits and starts – with a deep breath, a courageous truth, in an humble heart. “Prepare the way,” peace whispers, “for the Lord comes to make the broken whole.” So, we light one candle, because it only takes one: Christ with us. All Voices: We have peace, because we have Christ. Amen.

The Spoken Word “Peace Be With You: The Hard Part is Over!” Isaiah 40:1-11 Rev. Eleanor L. Colvin Sermon Notes Key Scriptures:   Isaiah 40:1-2 – Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, that she has received from the Lord’s hand double for all her sins. Isaiah 40:4-5 – Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. And the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all people will see it together. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.

Sermon Notes Key Scriptures:   Isaiah 40:11 – He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young. Romans 8:18 – For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. Key Questions: 1. How do you define peace? Do you allow God to help you experience it? 2. Isaiah says to Jerusalem that her hard service is complete. What areas in life have caused you to work the hardest or struggle the most? Can you allow the Prophet’s words to comfort you and to put an end to the struggle? 3. Verses 10 and 11 present different characteristics of God. Do you trust that our powerful God is fighting on your side? Do you trust that our loving Shepherd is carrying you close in this season? ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________
