Call to Worship One: This is the day the Lord has made! All: We will rejoice! We are glad! One: This is the day the Lord has made — a perfect day to preach the Gospel and to live the Gospel! All: Lord, we are striving for perfection! Lord, we are pressing toward the mark of the high calling! One: And what is our calling? All: To love the Lord with all our heart, all our mind, all our soul and all our strength! One: Is that all? All: No! We are called to love our neighbors as we love ourselves! One: Children of God — let’s get to work! All: With our worship and service, in our giving and living, we praise God and press on for perfection! Amen and Amen!

The Spoken Word “Our Ancestors Wildest Dreams” Philippians 3:12-14 and Hebrews 11 Rev. Eleanor L. Colvin Sermon Notes Key Scriptures:   Hebrews 11:1-2 — Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Indeed, by faith our ancestors received approval. Hebrews 11:6 — And without faith, it is impossible to please God. Hebrews 11:8-10 — By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to set out for a place that he was to receive as an inheritance; and he set out, not knowing where he was going … For he looked forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God. Hebrews 11:11 — And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she considered him faithful who had made the promise. Hebrews 11:15-16 — If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. Instead, they were longing for a better country — a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for God has prepared a city for them.

Philippians 3:12 — Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Philippians 3:13-14 — Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Key Questions: 1.What is the substance of your faith? What keeps you going? What gives you hope? 2.Who taught you about God? Who taught you how to study the Word? Would they be proud of your spiritual progress? 3.Hebrews 11 recounts the faith of God’s people throughout the ages. If the story of the children of God was still being written (and it is), what would be said about you? What are you doing by faith? 4. Does our faith walk make God proud (Heb 11:16). Or, is God ever ashamed of how we show up in the world in Jesus’ name? _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________
