Arise! Shine! January 3, 2021 First United Methodist Church 1125 Wellborn Road, College Station, TX 77840 Rev. Eleanor Colvin, Pastor (979) 690-8415 Website: 1stCollegeStation.org

Call to Worship One: Arise! Shine! Our light has come. All: Jesus is the light of the world! One: Arise! Shine! Our light has come to overcome the darkness of the world. All: On this first Sunday of 2021, we vow to walk in the light, the beautiful light of Jesus. One: Arise! Shine! Our light has come to guide our feet, while we run this race. All: Just as the bright star guided the Magi, we pray that Jesus lights our way – each and every day. Amen.

The Spoken Word “Shine!” Isaiah 60:1-6 and Matthew 2:1-12 Rev. Eleanor L. Colvin Sermon Notes Key Scriptures:   Isaiah 60:1-2 – Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you. See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord rises upon you and his glory appears over you. Matthew 2:1-2 – After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” Matthew 2:7-8 – Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”

Sermon Notes Key Scriptures: Matthew 2:10 – When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. Matthew 2:12 – And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route. Matthew 5:16 – In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Key Questions: 1. Did the chaos of 2020 make it easier or harder for you to let your light shine? What can you do this year to be a light in the world? 2. Considering how the star guided the wise men, choose a word that could be your guiding light for 2021. 3. In this text, Herod is basically a hater – trying to dim the shine of Jesus and even mislead the wise men. Is there anyone in your life who seems like they don’t want you to shine? What can you learn from the Magi? ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________
