Fifth Sunday of Easter Order of Service Praise & Worship Call to Worship One: You are Alpha and Omega – the beginning and the end. All: God of beginnings, you knit us together in our mothers’ wombs. Thank you for our mothers! One: You are Alpha and Omega – the beginning and the end. All: You were with us in the beginning and you are with us now. One: You are Alpha and Omega – the beginning and the end. All: God of endings, all the days ordained for us were written in your book, before a single one came to be. One: So, we do not fear what the days may bring – All: Because you are our God, and we are your chosen people. As we worship, feed us and lead us, so that we might mature in faith. Amen. Praise & Worship First Report Prayer
Offertory Prayer Good and gracious God, thank you for all the ways you give to us. With your life, you ensure that we have abundant life. Help us to use our lives to bring blessings and abundance to others. Use our gifts to empower your work in world – so that those who have not yet seen the Risen Savior may encounter him through our ministries. Use the gift of our very lives to carry your Incarnate Love into the world. We pray this with the boldness of those who know the power of the Resurrected Christ. Amen. The Spoken Word \"Milk & Maturity” 1 Peter 2:1-5, 9-10 Rev. Eleanor Colvin The Invitation to Christian Discipleship “Go forth empowered by Christ’s light to serve like Christ.”
Sermon Notes Key Scriptures: 1 Peter 2:1-3 Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hy- pocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salva- tion, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good. 1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy na- tion, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Isaiah 49:14-15 But Zion said, “The Lord has forsaken me, the Lord has forgotten me.” “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! Psalm 139:13-14, 16 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
Sermon Notes Key Questions 1 Peter 2 tells us that our behavior will be a sign that God’s pure spiritual milk is growing us up in faith. Do your choices prove that you are spiritually mature or could you use a bottle today? If God were to give you a bottle of spiritual milk to aid in your growth, what would be in it? Patience, discipline, commitment, faith, etc…. Difficult childhood experiences can impact how we relate to God as a parent. In Isaiah, God says: even if your mother forgets you, I will never forget you or leave you. Will you trust God’s promise?
