Celebrating Baptism January 10, 2021 First United Methodist Church 1125 Wellborn Road, College Station, TX 77840 Rev. Eleanor Colvin, Pastor (979) 690-8415 Website: 1stCollegeStation.org

Call to Worship One: Beloved -- come let us worship the Lord! All: God loves us and that's a good reason to praise! One: Beloved -- come let us worship our good and gracious God. All: God loves us and is generous toward us — offering us new life and hope in all seasons. That's a good reason to praise! One: On this second Sunday of 2021, we may have already forgotten our resolutions; we may still be carrying old burdens in a new year. All: No matter what we face -- we are God's beloved. That's a good reason to praise! Amen and Amen!

The Spoken Word “Tearing the Heavens Open” Mark1:4-11 and Acts 19:1-7 Rev. Eleanor L. Colvin Sermon Notes Key Scriptures:   Mark 1:4-5 – And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. Mark 1:7-8 – And this was his message: “After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

Sermon Notes Key Scriptures: Mark 1:10-11 – Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” Acts 19:1-2 – While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” Key Questions: 1.What blessings do you believe God spoke over you in baptism? 2.Do you receive the gift of God’s unrestricted, unmerited love? Or, do you feel like you must earn/perform for God’s love? 3.What are your responsibilities as God’s beloved, who is baptized in Christ’s name? 4.Consider the call to discipleship issued in the UMC’s baptismal covenant. How will you resist evil, injustice and oppression in the world? How will you accept and use the power God gives you to change the world?
