Call to Worship One: Spirit of the Living God, fall afresh on us! All: Bless us to worship God and God alone. One: Spirit of the Living God, fall afresh on us! Melt us, mold us, fill us, use us. All: Bless us to serve God and God alone. One: The world tempts us to worship its kings, to worship its things – All: Lord, lead us not into temptation. One: Spirit of the Living God, fall afresh on us! All: May the Spirit’s fire cleanse us. May the Spirit’s wind move us. To God be the glory! Amen.

The Spoken Word “Is This Your King?!” 1 Samuel 8:4-20 and Psalm 138 Rev. Eleanor L. Colvin Sermon Notes Key Scriptures:   1 Samuel 8:4-5 – So all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah. They said to him, “You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have.” 1 Samuel 8:6-7 – But when they said, “Give us a king to lead us,” this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord. And the Lord told him: “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king. Psalm 138:4-5 – May all the kings of the earth praise you, Lord, when they hear what you have decreed. May they sing of the ways of the Lord, for the glory of the Lord is great. Psalm 138:7 – Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life. You stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes; with your right hand you save me.

Key Questions: 1.Samuel warned the children of Israel that they didn’t really want a king –because of how harshly a king would rule. Have you ever been warned about a thing, but still had to “see for yourself”…. What did you learn from that situation? 2.Have you been super focused on something – a goal, a relationship, etc. –that might have actually been a distraction? 3.God declared that when Israel chose their own path and requested a king to rule them, they were actually rejecting God. What have you allowed to rule and reign in your life? Does it elevate and exalt God, or reject God? 4.Do you worship the King or the King’s things? _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________
