Call to Worship One: And this is how we know what love is…. All: God so loved the world that he gave his only son for us. One: God gave his son to teach us – All: How to live and how to love. One: God gave his son to reach us – All: When we were sinking deep in sin. When we were thinking our ways were better than God’s ways. One: On this Fifth Sunday of Lent, we seek God’s help with our Spring Cleaning! All: Good and gracious God, create in us clean hearts and renew a right spirit within us. Renew our spirit of worship, of sacrifice and of service. Amen.
The Spoken Word “Spring Cleaning!” Psalm 51: 1-4, 9-13 and John 12:24-26 Pastor Eleanor L. Colvin Sermon Notes Key Scriptures: Psalm 51:1-2 – Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. Psalm 51:3-4 – For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight; so you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge. Psalm 51:10-11 – Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Psalm 51:12-13 – Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. Then I will teach transgressors your ways, so that sinners will turn back to you
John 12:23-26 – Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Key Questions: 1.The Psalmist prayed for a clean heart, so that he would be fit to serve. What is your prayer? Who will benefit from it? 2.We are Christ’s workmanship/vessel, prepared to do good works – and because of that, there are forces that would like to “mow us down.” What is the biggest obstacle to you doing God’s will? 3. As you continue to journey toward the cross, what spiritual spring cleaning needs to be done in your life? ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________
