Before becoming Mother Teresa, she was born on August 26, 1910, and was baptized the following day, with the name Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Skopje, Macedonia. She was born the youngest in their family of three children. At a young age, she was able to locate different locations of missionaries on maps. She was so fascinated that by the age of 12 years old, then Agnes felt the strong call of God upon her. When she turned 18 years old, she made the decision to become a nun and left her parental home. She became a member of an Irish community, Sisters of Loreto, who had missions in India. Inspired by the patroness of missions, Sister Mary Teresa, Agnes Gonxha took the name Mother Teresa and later became St. Teresa of Calcutta. Aid the Unwanted, the Unloved, the Uncared for Mother Teresa experienced what she called the “call within a call” on September 10, 1946, which changed her life. It happened when she was on a train from Calcutta to the Himalayan foothills when she stated that Christ said that she should leave teaching to “work in the slums of Calcutta aiding the city’s poorest and sickest people”. https://www.motherteresa.org/ 2

An Interview With Mother Teresa Vatican Radio Who is Mother Teresa of Calcutta? Well September 2, 2016 Mother Teresa herself gave her identity: “By blood, I am Albanian. By citizenship, an Indian. By faith, I am a Catholic nun. As to my calling, I belong to the world. As to my heart, I belong entirely to the Heart of Jesus.” On Sept. 4, 2016, Mother Teresa will be officially proclaimed a saint by Pope Francis at a canonization Mass in St. Peter’s Square in Rome. Even before this ceremony, she has been acclaimed a saint not just by Christians, but many others of other faiths. Born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu‎ of Albanian parents on ‎August 26, 1910, in Skopje, in ‎what ‎is ‎Macedonia today, Mother Teresa came to eastern India’s Kolkata city, formerly Calcutta, in 1‎929, as a missionary of the Sisters of Loreto. Later, in what she described as a ‘call within a call’, she founded ‎her Missionaries of Charity congregation in 1950 to serve Jesus in the distressing disguise of the poorest of the poor. She obtained Indian citizenship the following year. ‎Mother Teresa earned 124 national as well as international honours for her works of mercy, i‎ncluding t‎he N‎ obel Peace Prize in 1979. She died on September 5, ‎1997 at the age of 87 ‎and ‎St. J‎ ohn ‎Paul II declared her Blessed in the Vatican, on October 19, 2003. ‎‎ 3

September 2, 2016 Mother Teresa often accepted invitations to talk, as they would offer her an opportunity to draw the ‎world’s attention on the poor and needy. Here’s one such interview where she talked Anto Akkara, an Indian rights advocate and journalist with international media. Mother Teresa spoke to Anto Akkara on November 17, 1995 at the Missionaries of Charity’s ‘Nirmala Sishu Bhavan’ centre in New Delhi. Below is a transcript of the interview. The interview: Anto Akkara: Mother, what is your mother tongue? Mother Teresa: Albanian. But, I am equally fluent in Bengali (language of Calcutta) and English. AA: Right now what do you feel: Are you an Indian or Albanian? MT: I am everything. Every country I love and I am a child of God to love the humans. AA: So, you have no nationality? Each person has his/her own December 2022 responsibilities towards the community. A simple act of helping can make a Her respect towards the people around her difference. To love and to be loved is the proved that she is in solidarity with the sole reason for our creation. As stated in sufferings of the others. With all this said, the interview with Mother Tersa, when Mother Teresa’s care for God’s creation is we involve ourselves in the community beyond unreasonable doubt. of helping and work; joy, unity, and love would prosper. Did Mother Teresa live according to the teachings of Christ and was she guided by the principles that promote the Life and Dignity of the Human Person, Call to Family, Community, and Participation, Option for the Poor and Vulnerable, The Dignity of Work and the Rights of the Worker, Solidarity and Care for God’s Creation? As a Catholic, these principles are what we live up to. It is our social responsibility to see to it that we are guided by the right teachings and we take these principles into actions. Just like how Mother Teresa is a role model for us in terms of helping, all principles were included on how she extended her hands to those in need. She saw the importance of each life that was created by God. In addition, she knew the vital role of a family and its values. As she continues to help, she never looks at the social status of a person or a family as she helps everyone she can, especially the poor and vulnerable. She took care of them like they’re her own family. As her reach towards the people grows larger, she ensures that she partakes on her own calling and journey as this is her responsibility. 8

Jaimielle (For non-Catholics) The word Catholic was derived from the Late Latin catholicus meaning universal. For someone outside the Catholic faith, do you feel included when discussing Catholicism? I have always been fascinated by fractals. These patterns are self-similar, going through never ending loops. From a mathematical point of view, it is considered as a geometric shape in fractional forms with infinite scales. Take a look at your surroundings; the pattern of a fern leaf or a snowflake, the blood vessels in your lungs, the shape of branches stemming from a growing tree, the milky way. The intricacies of objects within this universe have one commonality—the state of being eternal and connected to one another. Undoubtedly, not all that touches the ground is a perfect fractal. If we are talking about the division of cells from conception, how the atomic particles align making up our bodies, the accustomed pattern of human development from birth still has its endpoint. Simply put, you cannot grow a hand out of a hand, just like a human not being able to physically replicate themself. That’s the beauty of it though, individuality. The possession of a soul guided by your own accordance, the matter of free will, the beliefs we register and stamp upon our consciousness. Realizing that I am one, curious fellow, I once asked myself the question: “If there is no God, how can the universe exist?”. Feeding my interest to this topic, I dug different theories. You name it, the Big Bang. This theory proposes that billions of years ago the universe exploded from a tiny, infinitely hot and dense point called a singularity. Consequently, more questions flooded through my mind such as: “How did singularity exist?”, “Who created the singularity?”, “Can something that does not have a beginning nor an end be constructed?”. As somebody who does not classify themselves as religious or diligent to the principles of Catholicism, I could still associate my spiritual notions between Catholic faith. In relation to fractals, I ascertain that a thing is always—without exception—derived from something: a Creator. Whatever tangible and discernable is particularly sourced out from an origin. In order to build something that could go through cyclical measures, just like life on Earth, one has to be in absolute higher power. I resort to not giving myself another headache of asking where this higher power emerged, and frankly, we are literally residing in a floating rock so what else? The conditions of the universe are perfectly tailored to support life, the sorcery within the Laws of Physics are just so damn flawless that it is merely impossible to not believe that a Creator does not exist. Catholics would prefer to inscribe this higher power as God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit. Regardless of the name you would like to address it to be, it’s undebatable that we are all pieces of this higher power. 10

Wryley Does charity improve the conditions of the poor and alleviate poverty, or does it only encourage spoon-feeding to the poor? Explain. People are becoming increasingly charitable in recent years. Total giving to charitable organizations increased to around 400 billion US dollars in 2016, and online giving grew 7.9% in the same year. Especially this Christmas season, Filipinos look for ways to give to what Mother Teresa calls the “unwanted, unloved, and uncared for” — those who are poor, homeless, and sick. But there is a saying that goes: “If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.” In this example, if we closely analyze Mother Teresa’s charity as this humble yet famous brand with helping the poor, homeless, and sick at its heart, did she truly improve the lives of the people she helped? I would argue that she did not. Missionaries of Charity became a place to stay for the poor, but not a place to learn how to stand on their own. The poor were “bathed, clothed, and fed until they recover and leave, or die.” And when they can’t get back on their feet, they will come back, if they’re even fortunate to live long enough. Roughly 35,000 people were not afforded the luxury of coming back, because they died at the hands of the Missionaries When we intend to help the poor, we must consider their condition after we let them leave and feed themselves. With the brand of charity I call Transactional charity, which is the type of charity that only gives for the sake of giving, the problems of poverty only amplify. We are growing in a society that can provide jobs for people who need jobs. And under proper leadership, among other things, we can help alleviate poverty. With that said, being charitable means educating the poor, helping the poor stand on their feet with jobs or businesses, and giving them a headstart to prosper in life through the help of donations. This means treating the poor as our own family, helping them get out of poverty, and building relationships with what I call Relative charity. If you truly care for the poor, give them jobs. If you truly care for the sick, give them proper medical assistance. If you truly care for the future generation, give them an education. We shouldn’t let them leave poor and come back poor, because then we have failed at helping them. We should help them help themselves and get back on their feet to get out of poverty. So that when we see them on the street, we see healthy, industrious, and successful people. 11

Samuel If you were to add a new AUF core value, what would it be? The core values of AUF are the ones that make the students Angelenean. These are mabuti, magaling, and may malasakit sa kapwa. We apply these core values not only inside the school but also outside, it makes us better students and at the same time better citizens of our country. If I were to add another AUF core value, it would be “matatag”. We, Angeleneans, are resilient. This pandemic caused a lot of chaos and problem, and one of the problems is how education could continue during the pandemic. They found a way by using technology. Online classes were held and students struggled at first, but Angeleneans became “matatag” because instead of giving up, they fought through it. Whatever the problem is, no matter how big or small, we would make a way to find the solution to it. No matter how strong the storm is we will fight through it and rebuild whatever the storm destroyed. For every storm comes a rainbow, and that rainbow reminds us that we endured the struggles and now we can see the beauty of success. So that’s why I think “matatag” could be an AUF core value because it complements the three core values. Acquiring all of the three core values plus the one I added could make us the best version of ourselves. 12

Joy Do you feel as though you are worthy of being called a Filipino if you do not participate in NSTP and/or NSRC? Explain. NSTP or “National Service Training Program” is a program aiming at promoting social awareness and defense preparedness in the youth by establishing the ethics of service and patriotism while receiving training in any of its three (3) program components. NSRC or “National Service Reserve Corps” is to be consisting of alumni from non-ROTC components and when need of more participants of incase of emergencies, they are called. These programs are just requirements that you have to choose in college. I think that being not able to participate in NSTP or NSRC doesn’t prove your worth as a Filipino. There is also a lot of ways to contribute to our country without participating in those programs. Also being Filipino is what you are and who you are. Even if you deny of what you are, nothing can change that you are Filipino. Even so, participating in NSTP or NSRCS is a great contribution to our country as it educate and teach pupils to master numerous principles that will help them build their lives and communities. This program is very useful as it is a way for students to learn and train to develop discipline. 13

Aleks Have you experienced a moral dilemma? If so, how did you approach the situation? As a friend, I make sure that the people I care about find me comforting and trustworthy. I do my best to make them feel comfortable with my presence. With this said, I protect my friends with all means because for me, that is the definition of love; caring for them and staying loyal. But at the same time, what will this loyalty cause me? I had an experience with a friend whom I value so much. He was one of my closest friends who made sure that I was always doing good. As a friend, he is one of the best. This friend of mine recently had a girlfriend and because I love making friends, his girlfriend instantly became close with me too. We created a new friendship full of memories, but this bond which we created is at risk as my friend cheated on his girlfriend. Both of them are dear to me, what was I supposed to do? Stay loyal to my old friend for the sake of our friendship even if I knew what he was doing, tell his girlfriend about it and take the risk of losing a great friend, or stay silent and let them figure it out as it is their relationship? This moral dilemma made me stay up all night because I knew I had to make a choice. All the options tore me out as they have their own consequences. I keep going back and forth with what to do even if I knew in the first place that I should tell his girlfriend, because that is what’s right to do. As I made the final decision, I put myself in the shoes of his girlfriend and I knew how much I would appreciate it if someone told me my boyfriend was cheating on me. It would hurt, but knowing the truth is far more important than concealing it for my emotions. In the end, I told his girlfriend that my friend is cheating on her. Right after telling her the truth, I came clean to my friend that I snitched on him, not because I have a hidden agenda against him, but because I care for him too. I knew within myself that I did the right thing because the meaning of friendship is beyond following and supporting your friends blindly. A true friendship is acknowledging the truth and drawing out a boundary in what is right and wrong. If I was to be put in that situation once again, I would still opt to choose the same thing, without any regrets. 14
