EDITORIAL FROM DHIRA MADAN EDITOR Dear Readers, Friendship is a boon from the Almighty that enables us to surge forward overcoming all obstacles, knowing there is someone who cares without being judgemental and accepts us with all our foibles and shortcomings. We may not be able to point to our elders if they waver from the right path but with a friend it is different. A true friend stands by you no matter what, and is ready to sacrifice for your sake, to see you flourish in life. Let us be extremely grateful for this camaraderie and brotherhood. Independence is to be visualized more in the social context these days where we need to break free from our manacles, our shortsightedness, our vices, our insecurities, our pettiness, our fears… the list is never ending. The important thing to realize is to identify what your chains are, overcome the struggle, then empower others to break free and take flight to live their dreams and achieve the impossible. Let our Friends be the source and inspiration for our Independence and we their mentors to see them grow wings of confidence and fly into the boundless skies.
Fond Memories of School BY DR AMBREEN HAMADANI Peter Pan was right; growing up indeed is a trap. There are way too many responsibilities, and it is awfully hard to keep up the balance of life. We are expected to be on our best behaviour at all times with no scope for so much as a slip-up. We juggle multiple worries of work, career, family, future and so on. Like robots on auto pilot, we move from thing to thing. It does get overwhelming at times. When that happens, I close my eyes and think about the happy days of childhood when everything was so wonderful. The hues of the rainbow were incessantly splatted across my sky. Mirth and laughter rang in the air like sweet melodies. There was joy in everything, and stress was just ephemeral. My memories of school are particularly precious. It was my wonderful world where nothing ever went wrong. I felt safe and protected, and literally everyone was a part of a big and beautiful family. I hated holidays back then and looked forward to Mondays! Our typical school day started with the morning assembly. We all gathered in neat queues and started the day with prayer and hope. Then, with spring in our steps, we marched towards our classes with joyous melodies playing in the background on the school loudspeakers. Classwork was fun too. It is within the walls of these lively classes, with windows overlooking lush green lawns, that my love for science and literature was planted. As we moved from class to class, our heads were filled with more and more knowledge. This, however, was not it. Our education consisted of all round development. We were, through excellent mentoring and meticulous efforts, groomed into honest, hardworking ladies with a firm belief in virtue and labour. Lunch breaks were a festival of energy and fun! The vast playgrounds, the mighty Chinars with a myriad of birds nested in their branches, offered a perfect platform for using our youthful energies constructively. We played
all sorts of games, sat in circles under the mighty trees, chatted with our lovely friends while munching on snacks. Ah, the friends we made! They were a source of joy then; they are a source of joy now. Thanks to social media, most of us continue to remain in touch. It is in school that I made my best friends for life. It started with sharing lunch and continued to sharing the most beautiful parts of our lives. Those were the best days of my life; those were the days I would give anything to go back to! A longing stirs inside. To pull the strings of time and to go back to a much simpler one. With untangled emotions, with joys pure as the rain. When so much was in the dark, so much was yet to unfold. Like a birthday balloon, curiosity hung in the air, and uncertainty was not ominous. Frankly, nothing was. A longing stirs inside. To roll the clock wrong and land into the happy days of childhood. When the colours were bright and basic and sufficient to paint my entire sky. I never ran out of them then, and never needed more. A chip or a lolly was bliss. That was it. Just enough!
My Mother, My Best friend BY VEDRANA SAREC, CROATIA My mother is the one who always understands, who can listen to everything that bothers me, who will never condemn me, who will never leave me, whatever I do, she is always there for me even though we are miles away, she is with me in each of my situation, she rejoices in my successes and experiences all my pain and suffering together with me. I am grateful to still have my mother with whom I can share all my happiness and sorrows. She always thinks of me even though I am no longer a small child even though I already have my children. As I get older I am more grateful for her life, which is still there so we can have coffee, talk, laugh. Happiness is in the little things and we need to be aware of that every day because a loved one can leave us for a moment. That is why we should always be attentive to those we love and who love us. Often times we forget and realize this only when those people are no longer there, who have gone far to live or for some reason are no longer in our lives. So let's keep what is important to us in life, let's keep the people who are dear to us, because in an instant all that can disappear and stop.
Child-Parent Relationship BY SONIA ACHANTANI In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, many children are left deprived of the nurturing & care they should have got from their parents. It is not that the parents don’t love them or care for them but it is only that they are preoccupied with their professional commitments. So all their affection is confined to materialistic things that they can buy to entertain their child, keep him/her busy with, so that their earning capacity is not hindered. But they don’t realize that by doing all this they cannot wash their hands off their moral & social responsibilities. To make good human beings we need to nurture our children with good values, ethics, culture, traditions, etc. the list can go on and for all this we as parents need to create a bond with them. We need to spend time with them, learn about their likes and dislikes, their strengths and fears, be patient listeners to them and motivate their ideas of innovation and exploration. Moreover, we should welcome their questions though some questions might not be age appropriate, but instead of suppressing their thoughts, we need to approach it in a way that they get convinced. A bond can be created by exchanging small talk during meals, playing games, going out on leisure trips, some celebrations like birthdays, anniversaries, promotions, achievements, etc. There is a saying that, ‘the sweetness of the porridge increases with the increasing ratio of sugar or jaggery’, well dear friends, the same applies to our relationships. Also the more time we devote to our family, the sweeter the memories we will treasure and the stronger the bond will grow. As the Child Parent bond is a gift from the Almighty so it becomes our responsibility to maintain a proper balance between our professional and personal lives. Conclusion: Without a Profession and good earnings, you cannot satisfy and fulfill the needs of your family but without a family the earnings are of no importance as you don’t have anyone on whom you can spend what you have earned.
Expats Children in Qatar : The Luckier Ones on Earth BY RAKESH VERMA, DOHA QATAR The children of the expats are the luckiest lot here in Qatar. The income/status of the family notwithstanding, these children have the best of the best facilities and privileges that provided by their parents. Moreover, the government of Qatar enables the parents to give them the maximum family-time ever possible on the Mother Planet. Back home in their own native place, the parents may toil hard, and sacrifice the family time to try to provide such facilities and privileges to their children, but the local administration fails them. Frequent power-cuts, increased pollution, inflation, unstable political situation, crimes, etc negate the conjugal environment. Children are isolated from their parents, thereby making them waste the quality time by mixing more with their friends and neighbours, which at times is detrimental for their development. In countries like US, Canada and Australia, very rarely both the parents and their children are at home at one time. If the children are at home, the mother or the father is out on duty. Some say that they keep the father’s photograph near the tiny tots to remind them about the appearance of their father, or else they might comment seeing their father that “Mom, Uncle is at the door !!”. Frequent cases of drug abuse, mental diseases and failed marriages are some results of the environment the children are brought up in these countries.
Here in the Middle East, esp. in Qatar, there is boom in economy, and more and more expats are arriving, making stiff competition for admission in schools. Whatever be the salary status of the parents, the children are given the best education in the schools, where latest technology has been incorporated to make them grasp knowledge efficiently and quickly. At home, the parents enable 24 hours internet facility, extra classes, etc etc. Residential apartments give them free assess to gymnasium and swimmingpools. Free landline calls make it possible for unlimited over-the- phone discussions to seek/solve any problem in their studies. Parents can give maximum attention to their children as they are mostly at home in the evening. Absence of private transport makes the parents accompany their children to Malls, eateries, parks and cinema halls. Even in the current pandemic, the children here do not miss any class as the parents are ever-equipped to give their wards the latest gadgets as required for virtual-classes. In case of families who may not have more than one laptops for their children, organisations like the Qatar Charity and ICBF have come forward to provide one so that no one can be deprived of education. I would therefore, address all my dear children here in Qatar, to take the most out of the advantages they are ge:ng, and thank God as well as the Emir for giving their parents a chance to stay in this country.
Beautiful friendship BY AARNAV JADHAV, (I) NAVODAYA ENGLISH HIGH SCHOOL AND JUNIOR COLLEGE Have you ever watched a butterfly The beauty and the grace. That perch among the lovely flowers Looking for a special place. I watch them as the flutter And wonder how it could be Through a beautiful butterfly Your face comes to me. I guess that's easy to explain A friendship wars and kind Just like the sweet butterfly So rare when one you find. Welcome to happy thoughts Of butterflies so sweet A dear friend that I care for who just can't be best. I take this ties to tell you You are special in every way And send this card to let you know It's thinking of you today.
Friendship BY KARAN CHUDASAMA, (V) NAVODAYA ENGLISH HIGH SCHOOL AND JUNIOR COLLEGE I wanted to thank you but was unable to explain what it means to have a friend to share life's joys and life's pains Its good to know our friendship is one of endless devotion Forged out of respect and every kind of emotion It's patient and forgiving never failing or true when a hand is outstretched or one's heart is breaking It's ever faithful even when the world condemns And sparkles in the darkness like fireworks and gems It does my heart good at the end of the day To know that you will never be more than an email away Proof of a true friend is knowing that if I were lost - you would find me.
The Withered Rose BY PRITHA CHAWLA, (VIII) GYAN BHARTI SCHOOL, SAKET - NEW DELHI The sun is rising each day When before my skies were always dreary , dark and grey For sightless eyes seldom wonder astray; Every day was just the same Hope burned like a fading flame Nevertheless that it was at the whims of the winter wind Forevermore Or so it seemed that way; You captivated me by your resonating light And the way you brought life to a world devoid So when you get lost in your delusional reality, Haunted by your own mortality And questioning your sanity, I won't leave you to stand alone On judgement day In torrents of shadowed hail And screams of tortured souls For when my time comes to an end, You'll be there for me too; And perhaps we'll never live to be old and gray But when we found the withered rose tucked away We reminisced about you and me and our golden days;
The mind is a riddle we cannot solve, The heart is a landscape of wildflowers and concrete jungles, So cover your crystalline eyes If you ever leave me behind For I haven't been dreaming, I'll overflow; Lost in skies of powdered gold Caught in showers of empty hopes If I tumble down, falling fast to the ground Will you let your colours bleed and blend with mine?
The changing definition of Freedom BY SAPNA NUSRAT CHANDIO, YOUNGEST SPEAKER, YOUTH ACTIVIST AND BLOGGER Freedom is a permanent state of mind and it has a very conceptual ability of Having the right to express Thoughts, work and speech and a lot of entities with the liberty of the human mind and human Behavior. When you have freedom you become expressive. It's a mind set of fighting against oppressive things that can lead to constraining. Freedom creates strong attributes for a person such that he or she can spend his or her life by taking some initiative for a heathy mentality and building strong connection with life styles. Real freedom is not that you are free to go anywhere but when you feel unslaved and free from any disturbing nostalgia. A person can think freely do and implement his actions without any barrier or restrictions, is called freedom. Open mindedness and freedom are directly proportional to each other. The more you are open-minded, The more you become free and expressive. Freedom is the right of every citizen by birth. Freedom is when you don't feel any unpleasant moments not acceptable to the mind. Our conscience really needs a certain consciousness to live a healthy and happy life in this psychic world. If a person has no freedom, he or she can't proceed beyond the desires and has to expect the worst possible scenarios. Freedom is instinctive, since the wellbeing of human behavior is associated with freedom. Freedom is when a girl is ordered to sit at home without being able to study. Then after she is allowed to study, freedom gives us different opportunities in different ways; we can live our life according to our own desires without any barriers. Our thoughts are stuck with complexes of known and unknown causes so the greatest freedom is to get freedom from our own thinking. The valuable way is that we should not spend our life based on the others' point of view. We own our life, it's our right. Without Freedom peace is impossible. To get peace we must be free so peace and freedom play a critical function in our life, only then we will achieve the pursuit of happiness.
The indispensable factor is that to be free is not easy. It excessively needs a fight, struggles, suffering, losses , forgiving... Mostly somewhere women fight for their freedom, sometimes they are quiet to save their life or so many factors are responsible for quietening the situations which they are said to create. And I thought it's like bending of chains to as their mental health their needs their power, their peace. So, mental and emotional phenomenas are identified as freedom. For the moments and changes which we want in our life, we must be an undaunted freedom fighter for the success of our own individuality and for the support of our own uniqueness. Consequently, we will catch happy thoughts and great feelings. It's not all about what we want to do according to our will, but it's the right to do what we ought to. We can own Freedom by expressing, by raising our voice on an issue,by thinking, by writing, by painting by sketching,etc. Through these incredible resources in our mind we can create tangibility of freedom. Freedom is not only necessary for human beings but it's very much important for every creature on earth, including beautiful birds, insects and for mankind, so we are left with no option except to conquer this freedom and emerge a valiant winner!
Freedom means... For me freedom is, Not to be ashamed in my own skin, I am fat or skinny, fair or dark, ambitious, outspoken or I could just be me. Freedom from over bearing societal norms for women right from the time they are born to their last breathe. A two year old, girl, in a burkha so she could not be a temptation to the boys/men around???? How are we expected to follow the invisible tight rope of decency and up keeping our respective cultural/social norms if we do not know them, define them or play any part in defining it. Oh so you are working great, but be careful of late nights, male colleagues, your family values, clothes you wear, food you eat, how much you speak and in the end, of course, job is contingent on good will/approval of family present and future. I want to stand as a proud average looking housewife and not be judged by men or women. NEHA NARWAL
Freedom to me is right to express myself in my own way without any constraints and barriers. For me it means to stand with my beliefs, my opinion and my judgments, it is the ability to be in control rather than being controlled by people, notions and factors therein, it might be for a very small thing like choosing my favorite eatery to putting up for my trust in my thoughts and views. Choosing my institution and my playground, my learning capabilities and my mistakes and anything in life in general. In the nutshell I feel the word FREEDOM changes its meaning and range to the situation it's being used in/for. Believing and sticking to my beliefs is the freedom I feel and crave for the most. “I am no bird, and no net ensnares me: I am a free human being with an independent will.” - Charlotte Bronte VYOMA
Freedom - The word itself makes one liberated, light and ready to fly. To me it means the ability to free or break open from one's own weakness and shortcomings. To keep testing your limits, to challenge your own selves and to rise above the circumstances. Its a way of life where the only thing you loose is self doubt. As you free yourself from the self afflicted boundaries, try and take as many along as are willing to explore DR. PRIYA KAPOOR

CHILD PARENT CONNECT HELPINE YOU ASK, WE ANSWER 1. How to manage the changing behaviour of my child during the Pandemic? Ans: As parents we need to focus on the positive outcomes of the pandemic, eg. we have been able to spend more time with the family, work from the comfort of our homes, heal the environment, develop science and technology, etc. Second, we must stop discussing the pandemic throughout the day, by unnecessarily focusing on the death and misery it is causing. Enrol your child in an interesting online course like playing the keyboard, coding, creative writing, making a robot, culinary skills, etc. Listen to the anxiety and worries of your child and give genuine answers to all his/her questions. Build up a positive atmosphere and involve yourself in light hearted activities like playing Uno! Also change the daily routine of your child, making it full of adventure and suspense. Another suggestion could be, give importance to your child to teach you something that he or she is good at. When parents turn learners and struggle to learn something new, it works as a fantastic leveller. Keep a white board for the child to draw anything he/she wishes to each day, reflecting how they are feeling that day! You’ll be amazed to see the positive transformation in behaviour. 2. As the children are housebound, how to make my child work physically, instead of being glued to the mobile, all the time? Ans: As a family learn a new art, craft, skill or technology. Once you too get involved it is fun for the child who is eager to participate. Set an example by not using your mobiles too often as parents, during the course of the day. Have a no mobile/device, family time each day. Learning skills like carpentary (making a table for the child’s room), tie and dye (wall hanging), batik (bedcover), which can be downloaded from the internet, would change the outlook of the child. Play simple games within the confines of the house with the children. Follow an exercising schedule and cook health food together. This will also make the children gender sensitive.
3. Being a parent how can I find ways to make my child eat vegetables? Ans: For younger children change the appearance of the veggies they don’t eat and mix them with veggies they love. It could be boiled mashed potatoes with boiled mashed beetroot tossed in butter and set in a mould. Or it could be spinach with peas boiled with rice that is flavoured as per the liking of the child and served with the look of biryani. Pumpkin can be made into a chaat with potatoes and papri and chutneys. A lot of the veggies can go on to a homemade pizza by cutting them into different shapes as cubes, circles, diamonds, oblongs, cuboids, or made howllow and stuffed with another veggie! For older children let them cook it in a way they can make it taste the way they like it! You’ll be amazed at their creativity and innovation!
