DW KHANYA GUNDWANA KHANYA GUNDWANA: MY VISION IS MY LIGHT w e spent 5 minutes with online English teacher and budding content creator Khanya Gundwana. DW: HOW DOES KHANYA’S CHILDHOOD LOOK LIKE? KHANYA: I grew up in what I like to call the little-big city of Port Elizabeth, now known as Gqeberha. It created a great and safe upbringing for me to truly discover and explore all possibilities for what the rest of my life might look like. The opportunities were endless. This is mostly because of my parents who both supported me in all activities that I wanted to do or try. DW: DO YOU SEE YOUNGER KHANYA IN YOURSELF TODAY? KHANYA: I most certainly see the younger version of myself in the woman that I am today. My confidence has continued to grow, and I am still influenced by my mother who is an exceptionally graceful and elegant woman. I will say that I believe in myself more now than I did when I was younger. Often, people told me positive things about me that I only came to truly see and believe in myself in my adult years. KHANYA: I’m friendly and I’m a good communicator. DW: WHAT DO YOU STAND FOR? KHANYA: I love to bring people together. I do that in my own small way by bringing women from all backgrounds together through a group on the social media app, WeChat. What we all share in common is that we live abroad, away from home and our families. Through this platform, I provide a safe space for them to connect with each other, to explore various cities in China safely, to ask for help or advice, to share their business or creative initiatives, and to create their own little families within our small community making them feel less alone. DW: A SOUTH AH GIRL LIVING IN SHANGHAI? HOW DID THAT COME ABOUT? KHANYA: I moved to Shanghai specifically to pursue my career in media, communications and marketing.
