Trayambaka Mantra also known as Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is a verse of the Yajurveda. It is in Rudram and it is as follows: Tryambakam yajaamahe sugandhim pushti-vardhanam | Urvaarukam iva bandhanaan mrityor muksheeya maamritaat || We salute and respect, Him who is naturally scented, Him who looks after his devotees by mercy, And Him who has three eyes. And pray and request, To move us away from the catch of death, Like the cucumber from its stalk, And firmly put us in the path of salvation.50
MANTRAThe great mantra dedicated to Shiva as Mrityunjaya is found in the Rig Veda. It is called theMaha Mrityunjaya mantra, the Great Death-Conquering mantra. It is a mantra that has manynames and forms. It is called the Rudra mantra, referring to the furious aspect of Shiva; theTryambakam mantra, alluding to Shiva's three eyes; and its is sometimes known as the Mrita-Sanjivini mantra because it is a component of the \"life-restoring\" practice given to theprimordial sage Shukra after he had completed an exhausting period of austerity. The MahaMrityunjaya mantra is hailed by the sages as the heart of the Veda. Along with the Gayatrimantra it holds the highest place among the many mantras used for contemplation andmeditation. ॐ कं यजामहे सुग ं पु वधनम् उवा क मव ब नान् मृ ोमु ीय मामृतात् ॥ aum bhūrbhuvaḥ svaḥ Om Try-Ambakam Yajaamahe Sugandhim Pusstti-Vardhanam Urvaarukam-Iva Bandhanaan Mrtyor-Mukssiiya Maa-[A]mrtaat || aum saḥ jūṁ hrauṁ aumṁIn some Hindu religious books the complete mantra is preceded by aum hrauṁ jūṁ saḥ / aum bhūrbhuvaḥ svaḥ and followed by aum svaḥ bhuvaḥ bhūr / aum saḥ jūṁ hrauṁ aumṁ, which is its Tantric version.[3] There are at least two versions of the Tryambakam mantra found in the Rudrashtadhyayi and in the Shukla/Krishna Yajur Veda. The versions are similar with variation in a few syllables: aum tryambakaṁ yajāmahe sugandhiṁ pativedanam, urvārukam-iva bandhanānmṛtyormukṣīya māmutaḥ 51
