Hays Consolidated Independent School District ADDRESS: 21003 Interstate 35, Kyle, TX 78640 PHONE: 512-268-2141 DEFINITION OF CAREER PREPARATION EDUCATION: CAREER PREPARATION education is a method of instruction that combines classroom instruction with paid work experience, for an average of at least 10-15 hours a week, directly related to the th th classroom instruction. Students must be at least 16 years of age and are usually in 11 or 12 grade. Both student instruction and employment are planned and supervised by the school and the employer so that each contributes to the student's career objective and employability. DEFINITION OF PRACTICUM: Practicum is designed to be a capstone experience providing supervised practical application of knowledge and skills following a coherent sequence of courses and should ensure that students are meeting the 2-3 credit requirements. Unpaid training provides students the opportunity to explore a variety of careers, develop knowledge and skills related to their field of interest, and transition from the student to professional. An example of unpaid training would be students rotating among various departments of a local facility in the community and developing an awareness of many career opportunities available. RESPONSIBILITIES OF STUDENTS: By enrolling in the WORK-BASED LEARNING class and by signing the Standards of Operation and the Training Plan, students agree to actively participate in all aspects of the class. This includes but is not limited to:  Providing transportation to and from the training station  Attending school and training when scheduled  Complying with rules & regulations at school and at training station  Respecting the training sponsor’s time by not having friends and parents visit the training site and by not using personal cell phone or any electronic devices during training hours.  Participating in the student organization and supporting fundraising activities and competitive events.  Maintaining a passing grade in all classes. RESPONSIBILITIES OF PARENTS/GUARDIANS: By signing the Standards of Operation and the student’s Training Plan, parents/guardians agree to support and monitor their child's active participation in the WORK-BASED LEARNING program. It is necessary to the success of the Practicum/Career Preparation program that students, parents, and employers understand and agree to abide by several basic principles of operation. The development of good work habits begins with compliance with the Practicum/Career Preparation training standards. Hays Consolidated Independent School District offers the opportunity for students to do Practicum/Career Preparation training in Business, Family & Consumer Sciences, Marketing, and Trade & Industry. Admission to these programs is based on interest, aptitude, grade classification, teacher evaluations, and course prerequisites. All interested students will complete a Student Information sheet for the program and will be interviewed by the Practicum/Career Preparation Teacher/Coordinator. STANDARDS OF OPERATION 1. In order to remain in the program, all students enrolled in Practicum/Career Preparation programs must have a job approved by the Teacher/Coordinator by the __15___ day of school or within __15___ days of the student’s enrollment in the program. 2. Students MUST have adequate and reliable transportation to school and to work. 3. Student may be dropped from the program for frequent absenteeism from school for any reason. 4. The student is expected to call the Teacher/Coordinator and the employer if he/she will not be in class or on the job. Employer may be contacted by the Teacher/Coordinator on the day of student’s absence. 5. If students are not on the job during periods assigned for work release, they are expected to leave the high school campus immediately following their last scheduled class. Those students remaining on campus will be subject to administrative due process. 6. Students are expected to maintain a satisfactory academic standing at school and to inform the Teacher/Coordinator of any problems that might affect their jobs or school work. It is recommended that student work ours should be limited to 20 hours a week, excluding weekends. 7. Students will work at the same training station during the entire period of enrollment in the program. Any student who quits without prior approval from the Teacher/Coordinator or is dismissed from a job at an approved training station may be given a grade of zero on the performance evaluation for that grading period and dropped from the program with loss of credit. 8. Any student whose job is terminated for any reason must report to the Teacher/Coordinator immediately. 9. Students changing training stations with prior approval from the Teacher/Coordinator will have 10 school days to find a new job before being dropped from the program. Documentation of the job search will be required. Most advantageous is to find a new job before quitting the old job. 10. Parents should consult with the Teacher/Coordinator rather than the employer concerning any difficulties on the job. 11. CTE Internship Program is intended to enable our school district to provide a more complete service to our local business and office establishments by supplying them with better- trained personnel from among our graduates. This type of program does much to provide the youth of our area with a well-rounded education program that will fulfill the need for practical, down-to-earth training. It will enable that large portion of our students who desire to become occupationally competent to enter full-time employment upon graduation or to continue their education. Our students have been trained in all of the Microsoft Office Applications, they have excellent employability skills, and by being in the program, each student has the individualized training opportunity to enhance his/her knowledge and skills in the office/business environment that is needed by your agency. The CTE Pathways provide curriculum to students that includes topics such as: Proper Employability Skills, Knowledge in Microsoft Office Applications, Entrepreneurship, Business Ethics, Written and Verbal Communication Skills, Records Management, Banking Functions, Office Equipment and Safety, and the Employment Process – Interviewing, Resume/Cover Letter, Follow up and Portfolio. As the name of this program suggests, it is carried on through a cooperative arrangement between the businesses and industries of our city and the local schools. Practical work experiences are gained by the student through part-time employment in some place of business, such as yours, throughout the week. Students must be of a senior standing and must be at least sixteen years of age. Students also have the opportunity to develop leadership, social, civic, and career skills in business through their participation in the student organization, FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America), Skills USA, BPA (Business Professionals of America). Activities include: service projects, leadership conferences, competitive events at area, state and national levels, and fundraisers to support these activities. ATTENTION BUSINESS OWNERS Have You Considered Hiring A Part-Time High School Student? HAYSCISD is looking for Community Partners Who is eligible? Seniors and must be at least 16 years of age. How does the Program Work? Students generally attend school in the morning and are released early to go to work. Students attend a 50-minute class each day and they receive 2 credits/year for the course. What do they do in the classroom? Students are taught about work skills including job-specific skills as well as computer skills, job interview techniques, verbal and written communication, entrepreneurship, records management, banking functions, office equipment and safety, and business ethics, human relations, etc. What kind of jobs can they do? Every CTE Pathway has given students the skills needed to work the predetermined career choice. For example: (In business education course students perform a variety of office and business-related jobs, including administrative, computer operators, customer service and many others). How many hours must they work? Students must work at least 10 hours a week to remain in the program. Students may work more than the required limit. How much do I pay a Career Practicum/Preparation student? This depends if they are paid or unpaid intern. If Paid: The pay rate varies with the job skills, but must be at least minimum wage. Do I grade the student employee? Yes, every grading period you will be given a short evaluation sheet to complete on the student.
