HOLIDAY HOMEWORK SOCIAL STUDIES TASK -2 5 OLD MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

Geisenklosterle flutes The Three flutes found at Geisenklosterle cave archaeological site are the oldest instruments in the world. Two of the bones are made from the bones of mute swans and the other flute is made from Mammoth ivory. Researches have radio carbon dated the flutes and estimate that they are between 42,000 and 43,000 years old. The flutes are linked to the Aurignacian, an archaeological culture associated with the earliest modern humans in Europe. Bullroarer The Bullroarer is a ritual musical Instruments used by Many Ancient and current cultures around the world. Historically, it was used for communicating over the long distances. The Oldest known Example of a bullroarer was found in Ukraine, dating back to the Paeoliothic period. Asia, Africa, the Indian sub-continent, Australia, and the Americas. Percussion instruments The oldest evidence may be found in the archaeological site of Mezin a set of mammoth bones painted with red ochre and a reindeer antler hammer, with signs of repetitive surface damage on all of them. Some interpret these bones as musical instruments. They are dated to 24,000 years BP. String instruments The organic materials are not preserved so only ancient clues are found in rock art, like a sorcerer with a musical bow in the Trois-Freres cave(France), dated to c. 13,000 years BP. However, some authors consider that the sorcerer actually holds a flute.

Neanderthals flutes These flutes are made from the left thighbone of a young cave bear and have four pierced holes. Musical experienced confirmed findings of Archaeological researches that the size and the position of the holes cannot be accidental – they were made with the intensions of musical experiments.
