During the prime of his life the king Scyld dies. Scyld then goes onto be have an “out at sea” burial. During this process they sent the king out on the wateron a raft with all of his riches. This sails off and no one knows what happens. Shortlyafter this the kings son Beowulf begins his rise to king. Shortly after this a new kingarises named Halfdeane. This new king has a son named Hrothgar. Hrothgar wasalways very fortunate in the battles he fought. So to celebrate after he wins a battle, hedecides to build a very nicely sized mead hall (throne/celebration) room. Shortly after alocal demon comes to terrorize Hrothgar’s kingdom. This is carried out by the killing ofpeople “after hours” in the mead hall. Beowulf soon hears about this and decides to geta company together to fight this demon. This is how Beowulf gains his first great heroicfeet/story.Beowulf’s Battle with Grendel’s Mother (By: LaurenGibson) Beowulf gave a speech to Hrothgar as to what to do with his belongingsif he is to die in the battle with Grendel's mom before jumping intothe very unsanitary lake. Weapons will not harm the monster andneither will his fists. Beowulf's armor is too protective and strongso she cannot harm him but she can make him tiresome. Eventually,Beowulf spots a magical sword that can destroy Grendel's mom, takesit, decapitates her, and then walks over to the nearly dead Grendeland decapitates him, too. Hrothgar's people gave up on waiting becauseBeowulf had not returned and the lake of water looked like a lake ifblood. Everyone thought he was dead, but he wasn't. After defeatingthe two monsters once and for all, he carries the heads as well as thesword used to defeat them and his sword, he swims up to shore. TheGeats who waited even when the Danish gave up and left were so happy, some offered to carry the heads and swords. Historical References in the Film (By:Getsemani Herrera) The Funeral of Scyld . The funeral takes place on the beach where they would send the deceased on a vessel with his gold and treasures. This type of funerals were practiced in the 8th- 11th century. This is important in the story because After Scyld dies Beowulf becomes king. The Battle with Grendel’s Mother. This Takes place in the lair of Grendel’s mother. The place is surrounded my gold and jewels .This event is important because in the story Grendel’s mother cannot hurt Beowulf because he was a gift from God, this ties into religion. Throughout the story you see little parts of Christianity. This was written in a time period where Pagan religion was being introduced and Christianity was being left behind. The battle with the dragon. This battle happens towards the end of the story Beowulf. Like every story it has to end with some big battle. During this section it says Beowulf used chainmail and a shield. This type of armor was used in the 4th to 15th centuries.
