On the iconic sax Born in a musical family of six, he is the last born in the family of Mr. Kalyowa John and Ms. Michael Nabunya Mary(RIP). H.e began music at a Kitanda tender age, he played trumpet while at Omega Primary School and he gained a lot of September 30, 1991 recognition being the youngest in the school Ugandan jazz Saxophonist band. He received a bursary at Kampala Music School majoring in Trumpet. In 2009, while at Kampala Music School, he was introduced to Jazz by the Jazz tutor Chris Weigers who encouraged him to pick up the saxophone. He professed great interest in the instrument and Jazz as a genre. He immediately began to master his talent by working extensively with Ugandan popular artistes like Tshila, Irene Ntale, Myko Ouma, Isaiah Katumwa, Jose Chameleone, Maurice Kirya, Jamal Wasswa and many others. He has worked with popular bands in Uganda such as Qwela Band, Code 9 among others. He has made numerous appearances at Jazz clubs, night clubs and music festivals in East Africa. Michael Kitanda has been part of the jazz explosion in East Africa and is ranked among the finest Saxophonists in the region. In 2013, he launched his solo career that saw him release his debut Smooth jazz album \"Saxfaction\" that received a lot of attention on Ugandan airwaves and marked the beginning of his successful solo career. In 2015, he was part of the project \"Sax Aces\" that saw him collaborate with Saxophonists like Moses Matovu, Happy Kyazze(his big brother) , Isaiah Katumwa, Joseph sax, Brian Mugenyi and Mo Roots. He has headlined music festivals that include Blankets and Wines festival, Kampala Connoisseur festival, Pearl Rhythm festival, Bayimba Festival among others. He has also featured at Ugandas biggest jazz concert THE NILE GOLD JAZZ SAFARI where he has met jazz maestros like Gerald Albright, Norman Brown, Kirk Whalum, Jackiem Joyner, Karyn White, Tom Braxton, Mo Pleasure among others.
