MATH IN LANGUAGE DOMINIC RAMOS Dean and Professor at Yale University Mathematician www.mathematicsisfun.com 01

HOW CAN I VIEW MATHEMATICS AS A FUNDAMENTAL TOOL APPLICABLE TO VARIOUS DISCIPLINES? The meanings, symbols, and syntax of mathematics meet all the requirements for being a language, according to (Helmenstine, 2020), and it has historically been considered one. We all know that language has been a part of humankind and has helped us to apply the tools of disciplines of mathematics from the beginning of time, and it has helped to keep us all connected and one. In contrast, mathematics helped us solve problems and as a result, it is important for all scientists, students, and other vocations since mathematics, as a language, translates the meaning of numbers such as the study of addition, multiplication, division, and subtraction. As we can see, mathematics taught us how to explain and decode the numbers that have been given. From having examples like 9+10, we can utilize mathematics to break down this type of language which might be stated as \"nine added to ten equals nineteen.\" We utilize subjects that are related to mathematics in our studies such as equations since it is a very useful fundamental tool for us and a backbone for being a unique language, it is also because it teaches us how to follow directions and solve problems. Mathematics can be used as a language in everyday scenarios like going out to dine with friends and family or taking a stroll. It is essential to realize that using mathematics as a language provides us with both knowledge and solutions that can be used to solve real-world problems and develop our sense of reasoning and develop our logical skills. 02

HOW CAN I USE MATHEMATICS TO GAIN FINANCIAL LITERACY AND PROFITABILITY? It is undoubted that mathematics is a part of our everyday life whether we like it or not. Especially in our financial decisions as we use math when we buy or sell stuff, pay for our everyday expenses and many more. Ultimately, we also use mathematics for budgeting, saving and investing. With that, knowing, understanding and effectively using the different mathematical concepts can help a person gain financial literacy which can eventually lead to profitability. As an example, an employed person allocates 60% of his salary to his overall expenditures. While 18% on investments on mutual funds, 12% on savings and 10% on emergency funds. And he, of course invests his mutual funds while he puts his savings in a bank account. Through this, at the end of the year, his investments have an appreciation of at least 13% while his savings account also has an interest of at least 1% per annum. Having said that, he earned a profit while being financially secure just by using his financial literacy effectively and efficiently with the help of mathematics. 04

HOW CAN I USE MATHEMATICS IN THE DESIGN OF CREATIVE WORKS? From the statement of (Schattschneider, 2003) mathematical tools have always been used in the creation of masterpiece art and it started all the way from ancient times through architectural designs of palaces, mosques and cathedrals. In our lesson, we have discussed “Fractals” in which it is described as an “Geometry of Rough Shapes” and as we tackled it, I saw the examples and was amazed at how we can see it in real life. The examples that can be seen by people as a fractal were clouds, lightning, mountains, broccoli etc. From the examples that I have mentioned, these can be formed into an art, mostly people use this as a creative work such as a drawing, painting and even as a photography. Another example on how math is involved, there is the definition of what we call on “Dimensions” and it is a number of coordinates that is needed to specify a point and an example of this is the tesseract cube that we can see from the “Avengers Movie” which is a 4 point dimensional cube. Lastly, math is relatable to creative work because of wallpaper patterns and we’ve discussed that there are different types of it and different ways in knowing using logic. As from (Inkbot Design, 2022), mathematics is inlined with art, designs and creativity because as a human being, we do appreciate and know the idea of having consistency in a work. Whenever we do or look at an artwork, we do always see the lines, proportions, even the patterns and symmetry in which it is one of the important factors of art and design. 06

MATH IN DECISION SCIENCES SHIERYLL TAN Associate Data Scientist, Operations Decision Sciences at Google Inc. Decision Sciences Analyst at Mondelez International, Inc. www.mathematicsisfun.com 09

How can I use mathematics to aid in wise decision- making? Mathematics enhances one’s critical thinking skills - a skill that gives an individual “the ability to analyze facts and form a judgment” as defined by Maggie Wooll (2022). This skill enables individuals to properly think about the problems, issues, or dilemmas he/she faces and to provide the best solutions to these. Moreover, mathematics gives individuals another way of seeing all information, another perspective for opinions and insights, another set of alternative solutions, and another level of consequences. Knowing these, it can be concluded that mathematics indeed aids in wise decision making. To further prove this, mathematics can actually be seen in decision-making of numerous fields, such as in business operations, political votings, and entertainment, specifically games and sports. In the field of business, business people make decisions every single day, whether to continue production or stop production, to hire more people or to fire people, to redesign business processes and undergo training again or to stay the same, and the like. And in making these decisions, the upper management level needs mathematics to weigh each option in order to come up with the best solution that can help in achieving their business goals. During political votings, on the other hand, mathematics gives options to the government on how to appropriately and fairly elect the next set of leaders. Lastly, in games and sports, mathematics is used to decide the winners of the games, just like in political votings. Given the benefits of mathematics and these real life examples, I believe that I can use mathematics to first strengthen my critical thinking skills, second to look at things differently, and last make the wisest decisions. 10

HOW IS MATHEMATICS UTILIZED IN DEVELOPING THE DIGITAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEM? Modern communication channels and networks are modeled using complex mathematical techniques in information and communication technology. Device and structure design and optimization capacity to utilize stochastic and functional analytic techniques This knowledge will be helpful for many professional careers and ideally complements expertise in applied mathematics. Digital and creative technologies utilize a wide range of mathematical areas. Mathematics is used to transform digital data into information that is then utilized to guide planning. The tool can be used as a teaching tool or as a component of a careers input. Analogue and Digital examines the differences between the two communication techniques by examining various codes, fostering analytical thinking, mathematical reasoning, and data management abilities. Mathematics is an important part in creating and improving digital technologies. With the use of these improved digital technologies, it has made people's lives much easier. 12
