Bella is a Primary 6 student. One Saturday morning, she decided to volunteer at a home for the elderly.
Embarrassed and shy, she sat quietly in a corner.
“Hey, sweetie. Why are you sitting there?” an elderly woman asked.
“I promise I’m not slacking off!” Bella replied as she stood up. “Calm down, my girl. I’m not scolding you. I just wanted to know why you looked so scared. Can you tell me?” enquired the elderly woman calmly. “I don’t know what I can do here. I’m too shy,” Bella explained.
“It’s OK sweetie. Well…” The elderly woman paused as she scanned the room. “Could you help me to comfort the young man who is sitting on that bench? Afterwards, you can find me again.” “Um…I will try my best,” Bella said nervously.
Bella walked over to the man and said, “Hi, Mr. I’m Bella, a volunteer. I’ve been watching you for a while. You’ve got a face like a wet weekend. Are you alright?” “A bit under the weather,” the man replied in a sad, tired voice. “That’s too bad,” said Bella. “What can I help you with?” “Would you mind listening to me? I just want someone to talk to,” he enquired hopefully. “Of course,” said Bella.
“My grandmother passed away last week. She loved to sit right there and chat with me.” The man began crying his heart out. He added, “I was on a business trip, so I couldn’t attend her funeral. Then, my girlfriend broke up with me. So, I’ve been feeling quite blue lately.”
“Stop being so hard on yourself. I’ve got your back,” Bella said comfortingly. “This is my favourite sweet. Take one.” “Thanks Bella,” the man said. “I once heard my mother say that if someone feels bad, they should eat some sweets. They make you feel better.” Bella smiled at him and said, “Cheer up. Life must go on. Even when there are many things making you feel bad, that’s life! I have to go back now. I hope you have a good day.” Bella waved goodbye as she walked away. “Thanks, Bella. Have a good day,” the man said with a smile.
“I’m back, Mrs,” said Bella as she returned to the elderly woman. “I’ve never felt like this. It’s so amazing.” “What have you learned, sweetie? she asked. Bella thought for a moment and replied, “You can help people in so many different ways. You can be a volunteer just by asking people about their day. I’ve learned that helping people can make me grow and it fills my heart with happiness.” “Well done, sweetie. I’m so proud of you,” the elderly woman said happily. “Thank you,” said Bella. “If it hadn’t been for your encouragement, I might have sat in the corner the whole time I was here. “You’re welcome, sweetie. Well…will you come back next week?” the elderly woman asked. “Of course I will! And I’ll be happy to see you again, Mrs,” Bella said with a big smile. “Me too. See you next time!” the elderly woman said.
Good people, good deeds. Everyone knows what this means. Although many people are phrase-mongers who love to be onlookers, there are also many heart- warming stories happening in this crowded and bustling city.
Doing good deeds is not as difficult as we think. Most people want to create meaningful lives. I hope all people can find their own ways to be good people and do good deeds. The End
