FINANCIAL SUPPORT Access to Financial Support St Vincent Sixth Form College works to ensure that a quality education is available to all when young people finish school. We support students from lower income households with the cost of attending the College by helping to cover essential course related costs. The College can provide access to funds which students can use to pay for: • Discounted bus pass (see next page) • Refund ferry tickets • Meal vouchers • Books and equipment • College trips • Exam fees (where applicable) • Travel costs to work placement Eligible students will be provided with a termly allocation of funds which the College will use, on their behalf, to purchase any of the above relevant items. Bus Passes and Travel Information Getting to St Vincent Sixth Form College could not be easier. The College is serviced by several bus routes and has a wealth of parking for cars, mopeds and bicycles available on site. Students enrolling with us will benefit from a range of bus travel options. This includes our fantastic new college bus service in partnership with First Hampshire and Fareham College which will see students have access to three direct travel links to and from the college every day of the week on state-of-the-art modern buses. STUDENT SUPPORT At St Vincent Sixth Form College we want all our students to enjoy their courses and succeed to the very best of their ability. We aim to create an atmosphere where you feel comfortable in asking for any help you may need. One of the keys to our success is knowing how well you are doing at different stages in your course and setting targets with your teachers and tutor. The College aims to not only meet the needs of every student, but also to anticipate those needs. This aim is embedded throughout all aspects of college life and each step of the student experience, from enquiry to admission, enrolment and finally to moving on from college. Student Support Team At the heart of all the support we offer you at college is the Student Support Team, based in our brand new Student Support Centre. The role of the team is to guide you through the successful completion of your course and support your welfare. They will be able to see you about any matters of concern and will also pass on useful information about college events and activities. The team is there to assist you with anything you may wish to discuss or need support with during your studies. During the year the Student Support Team will be running events, activities and themed weeks linked to your tutorial programme. This will provide you with the chance to find out about services and opportunities available to you as well as learning about the experiences of others and forms part of our work to prepare you to take an active role in society.2016 ENTRY 77
Tutoring and Review of ProgressEach student will have a nominated tutor who they will meet at leastonce a week. During your college career your tutor will be involvedin evaluating your progress and setting targets to help you achieveyour full potential. You will collaborate closely with your subjectteachers in the drafting of what we call your Reviews of Progress.They will include a grade to reflect your current performance and atarget grade for you to aim for.For Parents and CarersParents and carers are sent a guide at the start of the academic year.This guide gives detailed information about the College and who tocontact if they have any questions or need to let us know somethingabout their son or daughter.The College keeps in touch in various ways:• By sending regular information about student attendance• By holding Parents’ Evenings• Through written Reviews of Progress at key stages of a course• By giving information about important dates in the College year and inviting you to public eventsWe welcome parent/carer liaison so please feel free to contact ourstaff should you have any queries.Study SkillsMany of the skills you need will be taught through your subjects. Forexample if you are required to write essays your subject teacherswill tell you how to do so for that particular subject.However, you may find that you need extra help. Your teacher canhelp you to book extra sessions with a specialist teacher in a studyworkshop for things such as:• Essay structuring• Spelling and punctuation• Research skills• Organisation of your study skills• Revision techniques• Stress management• Tackling low self-esteem• Reading speed• Reading or writing problems associated with dyslexia• Basic numeracy 78
CROSS COLLEGE SUPPORT
At St Vincent we are committed to supporting our students so that they can achieve their full potential. We provide support which enables students to work as independent, confident and successful learners. In our most recent Student Survey, 90% of students said they would recommend Cross College Learning Support. Specialist workshops are available for students needing support with study skills, SpLDs (Dyslexia, Dypraxia, Dyscalculia, ADD/ADHD and ASD), Sensory Impairments, physical disabilities and any learning requirements resulting from a medical condition. We also liaise with external agencies including Chartered Educational Psychologists (a local Consultancy group), Specialist Advisory Teachers, The Autistic Society and a range of Health Professionals. The Student Voice 83St Vincent is very proud of the role our students play in promotingthe College for each other. Students can join two groups dedicatedto supporting new and existing students, and you can find out aboutthese below.Student CouncilJoining the Student Council gives you a chance to make yourselfheard and influence the way the College develops. It is a greatopportunity to take part in College life, organise events, includingthe Summer Ball and guest speakers. The Student Council alsorepresents the interests of fellow students. The Student Councilshares information from the National Union of Students and everystudent at the College gets automatic membership to the NUS.The Council is led by a Chair and Vice-Chair voted for by all Collegestudents. They meet regularly with the Principal so they can conveystudents’ opinions to the people making decisions about Collegedevelopments. The Council elects a number of officers to supporttheir function and everyone is welcome to join and help shape theCollege community.Student AmbassadorsThe role of an ambassador is to help support the promotion of theCollege to schools, parents and potential students.
