We have researched on hydro-science for human health since 1980. He joined the Saemaeul movement under the motto, “Let’s try to be rich,” and became a member of society when the nation became industrial- ized. Looking at ‘people suffering from geriatric diseases which hadn’t existed before, instead of the sorrow from hunger’, he began to be ab- sorbed in research dealing with questions about the causes of human illnesses. After he realized the great benefits provided by water and that the laws of water hold the secret to the sources of life and are related to the basic principles of health and longevity, he came to have the belief that “ gain- ing knowledge about water was the most righteous and valuable thing which men could do”. Accordingly, he started to study hydro-science in 1980 to realize his mission and philosophy. He states his usual philoso- phy about health by saying that “he had to prove his belief through cul- tivating his moral sense with craftsmanship” and confidently says, “I am the very proof of the result.” Through cutting-edge science and technology development, we aim to be the main force in the development of human health and happiness. While enjoying the benefits of human science and technology, we aim to be the main force in realizing the desire of human beings to live a long and happy life in harmony with nature. What is Hydrogen Water? .myHydrogen water is simply pure water with extra hydrogen molecules added w.nhf.comto it. Hydrogen is a colorless, odorless, non-toxic gas that binds to other elements like oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon to form various compounds found in nature, including table sugar and water. Molecular hydrogen is the smallest molecule in the world, but don’t let its wwsize fool you, molecular hydrogen or H2 can be noted as one of the most potent antioxidants available to us. Thanks to its high lipid solubility and permeability, molecular hydrogen is able to both cross the blood-brain barrier and diffuse through cell membranes to influence the cytosol (flu- id within cells), mitochondria (cell’s energy powerhouse) and nucleus (“brain” of cells) [1]. The use of molecular hydrogen to support health has been well studied in both clinical trials and animal studies with some recent studies on many topics of interest. The multi-dimensional benefits of hydrogen have shown to influence detoxification pathways, brain health, anti-inflammato- ry, healthy aging and longevity, influence post exercise recovery as well as have an exercise mimicking effect on the body. 1

What is Free Radicals? yA free radical is simply an unstable molecule. To regain stability, it steals .menergy from other molecules, thus creating more unstable free radicals. w.nhf.comIf a molecule is damaged by a free radical it is termed as being oxidised. Left unchecked, this oxidation can cause damage to our tissues and or- gans. However, most free radicals are essential to our immune system. They help wwto eliminate viruses, bacteria and even some cancer cells. Molecules that have an unpaired electron which will seek to “rob” an elec- tron from the nearest molecule. About 2-3% of the oxygen we breathe will turn into good free radicals and toxic free radicals. oxic or ‘Bad’ free radicals never cease trying to bond with something else to regain stability. Unfortunately, toxic free radicals aren’t friendly to the body. They are highly reactive and cause damage to surrounding mole- cules. When a free radical attacks a molecule, it becomes a free radical itself, causing a chain reaction which can result in the destruction of a cell. 3

What is Antioxidant? yAntioxidants have the ability to neutralize free radicals without becoming a .mfree radical themselves because they have extra electrons. Antioxidants w.nhf.comare chemicals that offer up their electrons to the free radicals, thus pre- venting cellular damage that can cause aging and disease, such as dia- betes, hypertension, heart disease and cancer. However, when the antioxidant neutralizes a free radical it becomes inac- tive. Therefore, we need to continuously supply our body with antioxi- wwdants. The free radicals can increase the risk of diseases such as cancer and heart problems and could accelerate ageing. Well known examples of antioxidants are vitamin A, C, E and betacarotene. The human body produces its own antioxidants to fight against free radi- cals. In a healthy body, there is an existing balance between the genera- tion of radicals and the antioxidant enzymes that neutralize them. 4

1. Improves Gut Health Within the human body, hydrogen is a naturally produced by-product of yfermentation by the microbiota, the development of microorganisms with- .min the intestinal tract; however, production can vary due to factors such w.nhf.comas the individual’s environment, diet, and overall health. The symbiotic relationship between gut health and immune health continues as studies show the benefits of molecular hydrogen facilitating intestinal fermenta- tion and gut health, even promoting the growth of beneficial short-chain fatty acids. wwA Japanese study in 2018 concluded that Hydrogen Water strongly affects the intestinal environment in mice, including the short chain fatty acids (SCFC) contents and the microbial composition in mice [1]. Their research also demonstrates the possibility that oral intake of Hydrogen Water has beneficial roles for health in terms of cholesterol metabolism and liver protection [1].In Japan, electrolyzed hydrogen water apparatus have been approved as a medical device. And for the patients with gastrointesti- nal symptoms, drinking hydrogen water has been found to be effective in relieving gastrointestinal symptoms. A randomized controlled, dou- ble-blind, placebo-controlled study was designed to determine whether the ingestion of hydrogen water could improve the quality of life, abdom- inal pain/discomfort, stool form, and stool frequency in diarrhea-predom- inant Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) .[37] They reported ingestion of Hy- drogen water can improve the quality of life and reduce abdominal pain in patients with diarrhea-predominant IBS. 8

2. Powerful Antioxidants Free radicals are unstable molecules that contribute to oxidative stress, a ymajor cause of disease and inflammation. Molecular hydrogen fights free .mradicals in your body and protects your cells from the effects of oxidative w.nhf.comstress. Hydrogen combines with free radicals to prevent cellular damage and destruction. Free radicals combined with hydrogen and transform into safe and harmless water to be discharged from the body through urine and sweat. Researchers in Japan discovered that Hydrogen neutralizes the hydroxyl wwradical (·OH) and peroxynitrite (ONOO–) inside cells and acts as a novel antioxidant to protect the cells against oxidative stress [2]. Subsequently, another group of researchers expounded on the foundation and were able to determine how Hydrogen Molecules (H2) regulates gene expression. They concluded that H2 might regulate gene expres- sion via the Ca2+ signal transduction pathway by modifying the free rad- ical-dependent generation of oxidized phospholipid mediators [3]. 9

In an eight-week clinical study in 49 people receiving radiation therapy for liver cancer, half the participants were instructed to drink 1,500–2,000 ml of hydrogen water per day. At the end of the trial, those who consumed the hydrogen water experienced decreased levels of hydroperoxide — a marker of oxidative stress — and maintained greater antioxidant activity after radiation treatment than the control group [4]. They also concluded that daily consumption of hydrogen water is a potentially novel, therapeu- tic strategy for improving Quality of Life (QOL) after radiation exposure. Consumption of hydrogen-rich water reduces the biological reaction to radiation-induced oxidative stress without compromising anti-tumor ef- fects. www.nhf.com.my www.nhf.com.my 10

www.nhf.com.my Another recent randomized double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial investigated the antioxidant activities of H2-water in 40 heathy subjects, especially through a comprehensive analysis of oxidative stress mark- ers, blood immune cell profiles, and the genome-scale gene expression [5]. Four-week consumption of H2-water induced a substantial increase in the antioxidant capacity and a decrease in oxidative stress of DNA. H2-water greatly suppressed the expressions of genes involved in TLR- NF-κB signaling, as a result, the transcript levels of pro-inflammatory cy- tokines were significantly decreased. 11

3. Boosts Detox Function .myThe therapeutic benefits of molecular hydrogen in detox functions have been shown in multiple studies, mainly noted for inflammation modula- w.nhf.comtion and activating the body’s natural detoxification process [6]. The use of molecular hydrogen has also been shown to have protective benefits as it supports the body’s natural antioxidant pathways by activating Nrf2 expression [7]. wwAnother study showed an increase in antioxidant enzyme activity and a decrease in TNF-alpha levels and peroxide levels with the use of mo- lecular hydrogen. Antioxidant enzymes increase when adding molecu- lar hydrogen to water during a 4 week randomized, double-blind, pla- cebo-controlled pilot study [8]. Participants were evaluated at baseline and after 4 weeks, the group of men receiving the hydrogen-rich water showed an increase in serum levels of two endogenous antioxidants, superoxide dismutase and glutathione, when compared to the placebo receiving tap water only. Along with antioxidant and detoxification effects, hydrogen is showing promise in supporting healthy inflammatory mediators such as NF-kB, a family of transcription factors which support cell apoptosis and growth [9]. 13

4. Alleviates Metabolic Syndrome Metabolic syndrome is a condition characterized by high blood sugar, in- ycreased triglyceride levels, high cholesterol, and excess belly fat. Chron- .mic inflammation is suspected to be a contributing factor. w.nhf.comSome research shows that hydrogen water may be effective at reducing markers of oxidative stress and improving risk factors related to meta- bolic syndrome. One 10-week study instructed 20 people with signs of metabolic syndrome to drink 1 liter of hydrogen-enriched water per day. wAt the end of the trial, participants experienced significant reductions in w“bad” LDL and total cholesterol, increases in “good” HDL cholesterol, greater antioxidant activity, and reduced levels of inflammatory markers, such as TNF-α .[10] Another clinical study done in Japan demonstrated that consumption of hydrogen rich water for 8 weeks resulted in a 39% increase in antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) and a 43% decrease in thiobar- bituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) in urine .[16] Further, subjects demonstrated an 8% increase in high density lipoprotein (HDL)-choles- terol and a 13% decrease in total cholesterol from baseline to week 4. There was no change in fasting glucose levels during the 8 week study. 14

5. Improves Brain Health The benefits of hydrogen have also been found to impact our brain and ycognitive health. The use of hydrogen (through a saline solution) has .mshown to support a healthy memory in an animal study looking at memo- w.nhf.comry and motor function after an injection of hydrogen .[11] Autophagy, the natural and automated cleaning process for proper cell and tissue health, has been shown to be activated with molecular hydro- gen as well. An animal study using hydrogen therapy showed the activa- wtion of autophagy pathways .[12] Another study of interest highlighted the wneuroprotective effects of hydrogen by protecting mitochondrial function .[13] Oxidative stress is involved in the progression of Parkinson’s disease. Drinking hydrogen water reduced oxidative stress and improved Parkin- son’s features in model animals. In 2013, a placebo-controlled, random- ized, double-blind clinical study in Japan demonstrated that drinking hy- drogen water was safe and well tolerated, and a significant improvement in total Total Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) scores for patients in the Hydrogen water group .[31] 16

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS). The high costs, inconvenient ad- ministration, and side effects of current Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved drugs often lead to poor adherence to the long-term treatment of MS. In an animal study done in 2016, researchers conclud- ed that hydrogen water is a non-toxic, readily crosses the blood-brain barrier and have great potential in the treatment of MS .[32] Interestingly, hydrogen’s adaptogenic properties highlight the role it has in supporting homeostasis in the body. Two studies of interest showed the therapeutic effects of hydrogen therapy on the HPA axis. A double-blind, placebo-controlled study, which included hydrogen for 4 weeks; partici- pants felt a decrease in feelings of anxiety and an increase in mood .[14] Another animal study showed hydrogen supporting the HPA axis during mild stress and most notable, the effects were long-lasting as resilience to stress increased beyond the time of administration .[15] The protec- ytive effects of hydrogen may be attributed to its unique ability to diffuse www.nhf.com.macross membranes, directly into cells and organelles. 17

6. Enhances Exercise Performance Hydrogen water may benefit athletes by reducing inflammation and slow- ying the accumulation of lactate in the blood, which is a sign of muscle .mfatigue. A study in ten male soccer players found that athletes who drank w.nhf.com1,500 ml of hydrogen-enriched water experienced lower levels of blood lactate and decreased muscle fatigue after exercise compared to a pla- cebo group .[17] Another small two-week study in eight male cyclists demonstrated that the wmen who consumed 2 liters of hydrogen-enriched water daily had great- wer power output during sprinting exercises than those who drank regular water .[18] A closer look at clinical studies shows that molecular hydrogen mediates the same beneficial metabolic pathways that are activated through healthy and consistent exercise, helping us further understand hydrogen as an “exercise mimetic” .[19] This means that hydrogen mimics the bio- logical effects of exercise. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a drinking water that provides some of the same benefits of exercise without having to sweat? 18

7. Improves Kidney Health Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a leading cause of end-stage renal dis- yease. In addition, CKD constitutes an independent risk factor for cardiac .mevents and has thus become a serious public health concern. In those w.nhf.comcases, the kidney injury may induce pathological burdens to the heart and this in turn further exaggerates kidney dysfunction. A 2011 rat-model study indicated a novel strategy of applying hydrogen water for the pre- vention of CKD cardio-renal syndrome .[20] wIncreased oxidative stress and pro-inflammatory conditions, commonly wpresent in chronic dialysis patients, are thought to be enhanced during hemodialysis (HD) and to be associated with the excess morbidity and mortality seen in these patients. The hydrogen molecule (H2) has a unique biological capacity to act as an antioxidative and anti-inflammato- ry substance. In a 2016 clinical study, researchers discovered that during hemodialysis with an H2-enriched water, markers of increased oxidative stress (such as interleukin-6, myeloperoxidase, methemoglobin, increased lympho- cyte apoptosis, and high blood pressure) are suppressed. These find- ings indicated the use of an H2-enriched water may prove to be a novel approach to ameliorate dialysis-related complications .[21] 19

Another 2017 clinical study was conducted to evaluate possible clinical effects of molecular hydrogen (H2) delivery during hemodialysis in 262 chronic dialysis patients .[22] Researchers concluded improvements in the defined daily dose of anti-hypertensive agents, and subjective symp- toms, such as severe fatigue, and pruritus during hemodialysis treat- ments. Another rat-model study concluded that the consumption of Hydrogen Wa- ter is a promising strategy to alleviate renal injury as a supplement for anti-hypertensive therapy .[23] www.nhf.com.my 20

Improves Diabetes Mellitus w.nhf.com.myDiabetes mellitus (DM) is characterized by abnormal insulin secretion, de- wrangements in carbohydrate-lipid metabolism, and chronic hyperglyce- wmia. demonstrates that Hydrogen Water exerts metabolic effects similar to those of insulin and may be a novel therapeutic alternative to insulin in type-1 diabetes mellitus that can be administered orally .[24] Hydrogen promotes glucose uptake into skeletal muscle by stimulating Glut4 trans- location by activating phosphatidylinositol-3-OH kinase (PI3K), atypical protein kinase C (aPKC), and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) un- der conditions of severe insulin deficiency. An animal study also demonstrated that Hydrogen water significantly sup- pressed the levels of fasting blood glucose and improved the impaired sugar tolerance abilities of obese insulin-resistant type 2 diabetic KK-Ay mice .[33] Another study concluded that Hydrogen Water with ROS scav- enging ability reduced the blood glucose concentration, increased blood insulin level, improved glucose tolerance and preserved beta-cell mass in diabetic mice .[34] 21

9. Anti-inflammotory The anti-inflammatory effect of Hydrogen has already been reported in ymany studies. In the early stage of inflammation, H2 can reduce the infil- .mtration of neutrophils and macrophages, and lessen the release of pro-in- w.nhf.comflammatory factors by downregulating the expression of intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), granulocyte-macrophage colony-stim- ulating factor (GM-CSF), and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) .[25] wHydrogen can also inhibit the expression of proinflammatory cytokines wduring the progress of inflammation and has been revealed in many an- imal models to decrease the overexpression of early proinflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin- (IL-) 1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) .[26] Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflamma- tory disease which results in progressive destruction of the joint. A group of Chinese scientists demonstrated that hydrogen decelerates rheuma- toid arthritis progression through inhibition of oxidative stress .[27] An animal study was conducted to explore the effect of hydrogen-rich sa- line on the CD4(+) CD25(+) Foxp3(+) Treg cells in a guinea pig model of Allergic Rhinitis (AR) and investigate the underling anti-inflammatory mechanism .[41] They reported both the number and the cytokine secre- tion of CD4(+) CD25(+) Foxp3(+) Treg cells are decreased, and hydro- gen rich water may inhibit inflammatory response and ameliorate Allergic Rhinitis via improving the number and the cytokine secretion. 22

10. Alleviates Depression Health Nerve inflammation and oxidative stress are two main factors of MDD (Ma- yjor Depressive Disorder). It is well known that anti-depressants have lots .mside effects, so it’s a good reason to research some effects and mecha- w.nhf.comnism of treating depression with hydrogen water. A 2016 study suggest that the beneficial effects of hydrogen-rich water on depressive-like be- havior may be mediated by suppression of the inflammasome activation wwresulting in attenuated protein IL-1β and ROS production .[28] 23

11. Improves Heart Health Atherosclerosis refers to the buildup of fats, cholesterol and other sub- ystances in and on your artery walls (plaque), which can restrict blood .mflow. The plaque can burst, triggering a blood clot. Oxidative stress is w.nhf.comimplicated in Atherosclerosis illness. A Japanese study investigated whether drinking hydrogen water at a satu- rated level prevents arteriosclerosis using an apolipoprotein-E knockout mouse, a model of the spontaneous development of atherosclerosis .[29] wThey discovered that the oxidative stress level of aorta was decreased, waccumulation of macrophages in atherosclerotic lesions was confirmed. Thus, it was concluded that consumption of H2-dissolved water has the potential to prevent arteriosclerosis. Recent studies showed that senescent cells are involved in the development and progression of atherosclerosis, and eliminating senescent cells suppresses the senes- cence-associated secretory phenotype. In 2018, Japanese researchers did an animal study to demonstrate the effects of Hydrogen Water on senescent cells. According to their findings, the numbers of endothelial cells in the athero- ma expressing the senescence factors p16INK4a and p21 decreased in mice given Hydrogen Water compared with mice given control water. Furthermore, macrophage infiltration and Tnfα expression in the athero- ma were also suppressed. These results suggest that vascular aging can be suppressed by Hydrogen water .[30] 24

12. Improves Liver Health A Chinese animal study demosntrated Hydrogen Water’s protecting capa- ybilities against liver damages. They concluded that hydrogen water .msignificantly improved liver lesions, lowered the serum levels of hepatic w.nhf.comenzyme markers (ALT and AST) and increased the activities of SOD, cat- alase, and GSH-Px in liver .[35] Another study was done in 2013 to investigate effects of hydrogen-rich wa- ter (HRW) on oxidative stress, liver function and HBV DNA in patients wwith Chronic Hepatitis B (CHB). When compared with controls, oxidative wstress was obvious in CHB patients, and the liver function also signifi- cantly impaired. After treatment, the oxidative stress remained unchanged in control group, but markedly improved in hydrogen treatment group. The liver function was improved significantly and the HBV DNA reduced markedly after corresponding treatments .[36] 25

13. Improves Skin Health Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease, both representing thera- ypeutic challenge in daily practice and adversely affecting the quality of .mlife. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) has been evidenced to be involved w.nhf.comin the pathogenesis of the chronic inflammatory diseases. A clinical study done with 41 psioriasis patients reported that bathing with hydro- gen water, an effective ROS scavenger, has significant and rapid im- provement in disease severity and quality of life if the patients .[38] wAn animal study was done in Korea to evaluate the effects of hydrogen wwater on Atopic Dermatitis (AD, Inflammation of Skin). The result was im- pressive; the serum levels of cytokines such as IL-10, TNF-   , IL-12p70, and GM-CSF of mice administered with Hydrogen Water was significantly reduced as compared to Control group .[39] The results suggest that HW affects allergic contact dermatitis through modulation of Th1 and Th2 re- sponses in mice, which clinically implying a promising potential remedy for treatment of AD. Another Japanese clinical study reported Hydrogen Water application sig- nificantly prevented cell death and DNA damages such as nuclear con- densation and fragmentation in UVA-irradiated keratinocytes .[40] They reported that bathing with hydrogen water significantly improved wrinkles in subjects on the back of neck on 90th day as compared to 0 day. Thus, it may serve as daily skin care to repress UVA-induced skin damages by ROS-scavenging and promotion of Type-I Collagen synthesis in dermis. 26

If the water is rich in positive hydrogen ions (H+). then yes it IS acidic. But in this case, we’re talking about neutral hydrogen gas (H2), which is two hydrogen atoms tied together. wIt can be confusing to hear “hydrogen water” because we usually think of whydrogen (meaning the hydrogen ion, H+) as acidic, and that is basi- cally the definition of pH. The p stands for potential or power, meaning a mathematical exponent (in this case a logarithmic function), and the H stands for the hydrogen ion, which is just a proton and no electron. So pH literally means the logarithmic concentration of the hydrogen ion. But when we say “hydrogen water” we are referring to dihydrogen or mo- lecular hydrogen, which is a neutral gas that is dissolved in the water. 32
