EXHIBITION DESIGN: 'ALPINISM'This project focuses on the spatialrelation between a man and a mountain, which changes while climbing to thetop. When the alpinist stands at the foot ofthe mountain, he sees himself as a smallgrain on a mountainside,at the mercy ofthe powerful Nature. This relation isreflected in the project: paths leading tothe top are narrow and the surroundingblocks tall with aggressively sharpedges. While climbing to the top of theinstallation, proportions are graduallychanging to completely reverse in thefinal. On top blocks no longer obscurethe view, they have evolved into cavities.// A LAYOUT AND SECTION // // 71

13Falmouth University Maggie s Cancer Caring Centre Project of a support centre for people affected by cancer. The building belongs to a network of drop-in centres across the United Kingdom and Hong Kong, Maggie's Cancer Caring Centre, which aims to create suitable space of convalescence and support for patients and their families. // 83
MAGGIE'S CANCER CARING CENTRE This project involves adaptation of the 'Air Building', which belongs to Tremough Campus, Falmouth University. Its main goal is to create a domestic, people- friendly space for cancer patients and their families, where they can get medical advice and psychological support. A major role in this interior belongs to SUN LIGHT. Thanks to its strong influence on the patient's psyche, as well as on production of vitamin D, it is an important factor in the process of cancer treatment. Despite the vast area of the building (1200m2), the interior has a very intimate atmosphere. It includes a few zones of different scale and PRIVACY LEVEL.The Centre has both extensive, open space lecture halls, as well as smaller rooms and alleys giving the possibility of cameral meetings or even spending time alone, trying to deal with one's emotions. Maggie's Cancer Caring Centre31 // functions as a SHELTER for patients, where they can feel safe and calm. Its bright, cozy rooms encourage conversations and help to build a sense of belonging to the centre's community - the opposite of soulless hospitals. // 85

AURORA HOLIDAY HOUSESIn recent years, Scandinavian tourism has strongly developed. It often involves travelling through deserted northern regions, stayingamong pristine, severe nature and watching northern lights. Aurora Houses are excellent places to stay overnight during suchexpeditions. The concept ofAurora House is based on two standard ship containers.Their specific configuration is a result of diagonal arrangementof one of them, what makes it comfortable for sky watching and prevents the accumulation of snow on a glazed container's top.Composed of prefabricated elements,Aurora Houses are inexpensive. The building process is short and easy, but containers sturdyconstruction is resistant to harsh Scandinavian weather conditions. // 91
