President's WelcomeThe military is steeped in many long-standing traditions, and Army traditions are none more apparent than here at West Point. For many service members and their spouses and families, traditions are simply a way of life. There are many standard rulesand protocols for everything from dress and etiquette, to ceremonies like Reveille and Retreat. One very important tradition thatis ingrained in military life is that of service.Service in the military often gets used solely to define service to his/her country. What is not expressed enough is that thistradition is more often a service to others. Military families know all too well the sacrifices of the lifestyle and are usually the firstto stand up and volunteer to help in any way possible. It is understood that we cannot make it alone and sometimes needsupport, however big or small. With this unique insight, we are better able to use that knowledge and sense of community to helpothers in need regardless of who or where they are.The West Point Spouses' Club motto, “Where Friendships and Traditions Thrive”, shows that maintaining traditions is a pillar ofour organization. One of our proudest traditions is that of community service. The WPSC is a volunteer run organization thatworks diligently to organize and participate in numerous service projects throughout the year. It is through service to ourcommunity that we can make a positive difference for those around us.Each year at our annual Super Sign Up we choose a non-profit or community service organization to support by collectingdonations from our members. This year we had the opportunity to work with Safe Homes of Orange County who provide safehaven for those affected by domestic violence and human trafficking. Due to our wonderful members, we were able to make alarge donation of items, from new towels and sheets, to cleaning supplies and food. Each of these simple items helps to supportthose in need in a wonderful immeasurable way and nothing makes us feel more honored than to be able to help.As an organization one of our most rewarding traditions of the year is being able to award grants and scholarships back to ourcommunity. Through the assistance and encouragement of our members, via shopping at the WPSC Gift Shoppe andparticipating in our fundraising Casino Night, we are able to provide support for high school seniors off to college, for spousescontinuing their higher education, and for local organizations and businesses to continue their support of the community throughvarious programs and opportunities. As the holiday season rolls in, I urge you to remember that traditions are not just where your family goes or what you eat, butmore importantly the legacy you want to leave behind. By being an active member of the community and serving those aroundyou, you have the opportunity to be a positive influence. One of the greatest gifts you can give is your time and more often thannot, that service can turn into a friendship that can enrich your life.We hope that you will celebrate and participate in our myriad of rich traditions during your time here at West Point. If any onetradition sticks with you, I hope that it is the gift of community service and the importance of building a positive community.“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much” – Helen KellerCheers & BEAT NAVY!Stephanie FloresWPSC President, 2018-2019 Page 3 The Link Holiday 2018

Why Join the “Club”? There are so many reasons to check out our Spouses’ club. Some of us have made some of our best friends through clubs we’ve been a part of. It’s so great at how quickly you become invested in your community after joining. If you haven’t done it yet, try it…and bring a friend! The focus of these clubs has changed over the years. Back in 1996, at my first “coffee,” I was surrounded by onlywomen who wore their absolute best business casual. Mind you, this wasn’t the afternoon white-gloved teas, but it was pretty darn close. No thanks. I’m so grateful that the military community has evolved and that the now spouses’ clubs have experienced a well-needed transformation. I’m still trying to convince you to join…can you tell? There is room for everyone. No, seriously, everyone is welcome. It is a community Spouses’ club, so if you’re in the community, you can join. We truly have something for everyone! Lunch Bunch, Moms & Tots, West Point Experience Tours, Reel Time, Cocktail club…just to name a few. And if you don’t like the already existing groups, you can even create another group to be in charge of! It is sorewarding to get involved by volunteering to help you feel more a part of the community. We fundraise as a non- profit and much of that money raised is given back to the local community in the form of grants, scholarships, and donations. What is better than having fun while making money and then donating to great causes? Be the change! Better your community! Be a support! Get support! Enjoy friends! Join the WPSC today at https://westpointspousesclub.org/join/. Book ClubThe WPSC Book Club monthly event connects spouses with a passion for reading and whoare looking to experiment with new genres. The Spouses’ club has members with diversebackgrounds. This adds great diversity to the conversation and perspective of penmanship. This month we collected gently used books to donate to the West Point Elementary PTOin support of the Read-a-Thon.Each month the book club leader assigns a genre and the group members recommenddifferent titles from the genre. The voting occurs at the meeting for the next month’s book. The first genre was fiction for the 2018-19 board year, and the book we read was The Lightof Paris by Eleanor Brown. The book was told from the perspective of Madelyn. She wasdiscovering her true desires, all while reading the journals of her grandmother, who went onan extended trip to Paris in 1924 against her parents' wishes. The book club had the great pleasure to Skype with the author, Eleanor Brown at this month’sgathering. Ms. Brown shared her writing process and how the characters from the book weredeveloped. Her inspiration for the grandmother’s character was based on her owngrandmother’s trip to Paris in 1923. The group really enjoyed asking questions and hearingher thoughts. For the month of October, the genre chosen was science fiction and the book selected wasDark Matter by Blake Crouch. It is never too late to join the book club and you don’t haveto attend each meeting. Members enjoy sharing favorite books and great discussion.During November, we will read a biography and December is usually something light and fun.During our December meeting we also will have a cookie exchange!September's Book A Little about the Author “ Eleanor Brown is the New York Times and #1 internationalThe Light of Paris bestselling author of The Weird Sisters, The Light of Paris and theby Eleanor Brown. editor of the forthcoming anthology, A Paris All Your Own: Bestselling Women Writers on the City of Light. Community West Point and Wreaths Across America 9th Annual Ceremony Saturday, December 1, 2018 1200 hours Each December Wreaths Across America honors and remembers our country’s veterans with wreath laying ceremonies at cemeteries across the country. The organization, which grew out of Morrill Worcester’s annual tribute to veterans at Arlington National Cemetery, has a mission to Remember, Honor and Teach. They are committed to teaching younger generations about the value of their freedoms, and the importance of honoring those who sacrificed so much to protect those freedoms. For the past eight years, led by the passion of Jackie and Dan McNally, and Todd Crowder, our community has come together to bring this moving tradition to the West Point Cemetery. West Point Spouses’ Club is honored to support the wreath laying through our grant program and volunteering at the ceremony to lay wreaths. The ceremony always proves to be a moving day where we can pause during the busy holiday season to betogether with family and reflect the mission of Wreaths Across America: Remember, Honor, Teach. One of the kept was caroling with the Glee Club. The following is an exerpt from the minutes of the WPWC meeting held in Cullum Hall on December 12, 1944:“ The Glee Club under the Direction of Mrs. Lindsay with Mrs. Hughes as accompanist established Christmasspirit for us by singing three lovely carols. Our speaker of the afternoon, Mr. Charles Hanson Towne, was then introduced by Mrs. Denson who gave abrief resume of his many varied activities. Mr. Towne delighted us with reminiscences of his early experienceson the stage and many anecdotes concerning his contacts with the great theatre – Sarah Bernhardt, OtisSkinner, Mrs. Fiske and many other. The reading of several of his poems concluded an all too brief discussionand left us wanting more. Our formal program was concluded with their selections played by Mrs. Lindsay at the harp, Mrs. Michaelson the violin and Mrs. Manus at the piano, and with further carols from the Glee Club.Mrs. Fenton then extended Christmas greetings and an invitation to join in a cup of tea at the lovely table forwhich Mrs. Barth has made the arrangements.”Caroling has been a program of the WPWC on and off since 1938. ~ This Article was first published in the Holiday Link 2012/13.
