SMFG Smart Microfluidics Group From Design To Manufacturing Microfluidic device manufacturing taps on the capabilities arising from multidisciplinary fields such as chemistry, physics, engineering, microtechnology and biotechnology. These devices consist of sub-millimetre-sized channels that can be used to control the movement of nano, and even picolitre volumes of fluid.The applications of microfluidic devices are diverse, ranging from ink-jet printing to lab-on-chip, and are widely used in biomedical research and diagnostics, chemical processing, water monitoring/processing, and alternative energy exploitation. Customer Story Microfluidic Point-of-Care PCR Vishuo Biomedical Pte Ltd is a Singapore based Precision Medicine company. Founded in 2011, Vishuo has expanded its regional presence in Singapore, China, Thailand, US and with partners in Indonesia & Australia. Vishuo’s main products include PCR-based assays for identification of genetic markers in patients and retrieval of drug effect prediction and dosage recommendation from their database. In order to expand the usage of the database by pharmacist or doctors in the clinics without access to PCR labs which require hefty investments, Vishuo has worked with SIMTech Smart Microfluidics Group since 2019 to develop a point-of-care PCR system with fully enclosed and automated sample-in-result-out function, so that doctors or nurses are able to obtain genetic information on the spot. The system is able to process up to 4 patient samples in one run and provide the information of genetic biomarkers in 1-2 hours. The microfluidic chip developed for this system and the PCR test are fully enclosed, so it can be run at normal biolabs without the need for special ventilation or equipment required for conventional PCR labs. More applications are being explored on the developed platform by Vishuo and SIMTech Microfluidics team. “ This is an exemplary model of collaboration on the industrialisation of deep tech“ between industry and research institutes in Singapore. Taking advantage of the strong R&D capabilities of A*STAR, we have completed the development of the IVD product and quickly brought the product to the local medical device market via Vishuo’s marketing channel.
