SLCMG Sustainability & Life Cycle Management Group Fostering a Sustainable Future The Sustainability and Life Cycle Management (SLCM) group strives to foster a sustainable future, where businesses make profits while making a positive impact on people and the planet. Our philosophy is to apply interdisciplinary science and life cycle thinking in solving sustainability challenges. We focus our R&D efforts in two key areas: 1. Sustainable Design & Operations which looks at how resource consumption and waste can be minimised to improve resource efficiency in business operations; and 2. Sustainability Informatics & Strategy which looks at quantifying sustainability performance and how business models and practices can be transformed to decarbonise operations and recirculate resources within the economy. Collaborating with partners across A*STAR, universities, and the industry, R&D outcomes are translated into capabilities and tools, enabling companies to improve their resource efficiency, and transit towards a sustainable and circular economy. Customer Stories Life Cycle Assessment to Help Businesses with Sustainability Efforts The SLCM group has delivered numerous LCA projects to date, tailored to different stakeholders’ goals and needs. One such project was a study commissioned by Temasek to quantify the environmental impact of food consumed in Singapore. Done in collaboration with Deloitte, the insights derived through the study helped inform decision and policymakers on less environmentally harmful strategies for import and local production of food. The study linked Singapore’s food consumption patterns to the resulting environmental impact. Furthermore, the associated supply chain activities involving transportation and energy sources were also found to have contributed to significant greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, the study recommended consumers to make more eco-friendly food choices, and F&B businesses to source and use more eco-friendly ingredients. SLCM also conducts training courses to equip participants with the knowledge and tools to assess the carbon footprint of their companies, products and services, and to help them identify hotspots for improvement. To date, over 10 batches of the carbon footprint assessment course have been conducted, with more than 120 industry participants from over 80 companies trained. Reducing Energy Consumption and Cost through Real-time Energy Efficiency Monitoring and Analysis The Energy Efficiency Monitoring and Analysis System (E2MAS) was deployed by LHT Holdings Limited, a publicly listed company in the timber industry for more than 30 years. The system helps the company to assess its equipment’s energy efficiency in real-time and identify hotspots of excessive energy usage. Through the power meters installed at the pallet assembly and polishing machines, the system analyses energy data for the hotspots and derive potentials for energy efficiency improvement. It enables LHT to understand day- to-day energy usage in its manufacturing line, and adopt best practices in energy management. MORE STORIES?
