Apply Surface Enhancement and Finishing Technologies (42 hours) Skills Course Reference Number: CRS-Q-0041297-PRE Most components used in many industries such as aerospace, automotive, marine, or energy are subjected to heavy and demanding operating conditions. As such, these components need to be enhanced to achieve the desired functional performance, aesthetics and high fatigue life. These value-added enhancements can be realised through a myriad of surface enhancements and finishing technologies. It is thus important to understand the fundamentals and principles of these technologies, in particular, state-of-the-art mechanical and laser techniques and how these processes react with materials to better optimise the process efficiency, product quality and cost to maximise the economic benefits for businesses. This module introduces the fundamentals of surface enhancement and finishing processes via mechanical and laser techniques, such as rolling, peening, burnishing, mechanical finishing processes (eg. vibratory bowl finishing), drag finishing, abrasive flow machining, magneto-rheological finishing and grinding, laser surface treatment for functionalities and marking, laser peening and laser finishing processes. Participants will gain a solid understanding of these processes and the issues and effects on work substrates. Participants will also be guided through hands-on project-based sessions on real-world industrial topics using SIMTech equipment and instruments to further enhance their understanding of surface enhancement and finishing technologies and applications in the manufacturing industry. Why This Course • Designed specifically to upskill the local industry or can be adapted to reskill engineering talents • Highly practical and intensive • Latest knowledge and up-to-date technologies • Project-based with real-world industrial application case studies • Expert trainers in the field with many years of industry project experience Who Should Attend This course is designed for managers, engineers, researchers, and even operators from the precision engineering, aerospace, automotive, marine, energy, electronics and relevant other industrial sectors to enhance the knowledge and skills on surface enhancement and finishing technologies in fulfilling the relevant functional requirements. When & Where Please visit our website at www.a-star.edu.sg/SIMTech/KTO for the course schedule. Training Venue: Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology 2 Fusionopolis Way, Innovis, Level 8, Singapore 138634

About the Trainers Dr Wang Xincai is a Senior Scientist with SIMTech. He received his BEng & MEng from the Tsinghua University, Beijing and his PhD from the National University of Singapore. His research interests lie in laser micro-machining and processing covering laser micro-machining of difficult-to-machine materials such as Si, glass, ceramic, composite and WC, laser micro/nano surface texturing on mold metal and polymer substrates for improving the surface functional properties, and laser semiconductor annealing process. He has initiated and led more than 20 projects including in-house, CRP and industry projects and published more than 120 journal and conference papers. Dr Liu Kui is a Senior Scientist with SIMTech and an adjunct Associate Professor at the National University of Singapore (NUS). He received his BSc and MSc degrees from the Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, China, and his PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering from NUS in 2002. Dr Liu is an active researcher with extensive experience in both academic and industrial communities. He has led more than 20 R&D projects sponsored by MNCs and SMEs to develop technical solutions related to advance machining technologies. His research interests include ultra-precision and precision machining, micro/nano machining, ductile machining of brittle materials, high-speed machining, surface finishing and modification. He has published 2 books, 6 book chapters, and over 170 international journal and conference papers. He also filed 4 patents and 18 technical disclosures, of which some technologies have been transferred and licensed to local companies.
