With a greater drive towards a Green Economy and the importance of sustainability, remanufacturing is becoming a larger and larger industry. The rise in the Remanufacturing industry brings new challenges to machining with technologies helping to deal with the high mix low volume and almost hyper-personalisation requirements. Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining has been well established and utilised in different industrial sectors such as aerospace, marine, oil & gas, automotive, MedTech, precision engineering (PE), moulds and dies. Smart machining techniques, which can be applied to both Remanufacturing and standard components, have tremendous potential and are becoming one of a new generation of high-value precision manufacturing technologies in line with the advance of Industry 4.0 concepts. To enter the remanufacturing market or remain competitive and profitable, plants and machines will have to be smarter: better connected, more efficient, more flexible, and be safer. About the Programme This course aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of the participant in the fundamentals and state-of-the-art on the latest developments in smart machining technology through lectures and lab demonstrations. Remanufacturing will be introduced as a developing industry and case studies will be discussed throughout the course to enhance the participants’ appreciation of the different industrial applications. The knowledge gained during this course benefits both the participants who stand to upgrade their individual expertise and their companies with the opportunity to improve their productivity and competitiveness. Who Should Attend The programme is recommended for managers, engineers, researchers, technicians and machinists who are in the areas of manufacturing productions for various industrial sectors.

Course Outline Skills Course Reference Number: To be confirmed (24 training hours) The programme engages the Learn-Practise-Implement™ (LPI) pedagogy, through which fundamental knowledge and principles taught will be reinforced in practise, as well as during the implementation process using real business scenario and data. Fundamentals in Impact of Adaptive Remanufacturing Machining on Machining Surface Integrity Technology Technology Tool Condition Closed-loop Monitoring with Control Systems Machine Learning By the end of this course, participants will be able to gain the following knowledge and skills: Cycles of the circular economy  Remanufacturing lifecycle  Flow of the remanufacturing process  Benefits of remanufacturing  Machined surface characteristics and defects  Unit events  Mechanisms and their effect of surface integrity  Tool wear mechanisms  Tool condition sensing  Signal acquisition and signal processing  Machine learning techniques  Feature extraction  Classification versus regression  Degrees of adaptive machining  Probing on CNC machines  Machine-to-machine communication  Expression-based CAD modelling  Automation of the adaptive machining process  Closed-loop system architecture  Process capability index and process control charts Upon Completion of this Programme Participants will be awarded with a certificate of attendance by ARTC. Course Fee and Funding • The nett course fee for all Singaporeans and SPRs aged 21 years old and above is S$420 (before GST). • Employees fully sponsored by SMEs can claim an additional 20% of the full course fee with the Enhanced Training Support for SMEs Funding scheme (ETSS), subject to approval by SSG. • Singaporeans aged 40 years and above can claim an additional 20% of the full course fee with the Mid-Career Enhanced Subsidy (MCES). • Singaporeans aged 25 years old and above are eligible for SkillsFuture Credit which can be used to offset course fees (for self-sponsored registrations only). • The full course fee before funding is S$1,400 (before GST). About the Trainers Mr Matthew Francis King is the Deputy Group Manager of the Advanced Remanufacturing Group and Senior Technical Lead for the Machining Technologies Team with A*STAR ARTC. He manages a team of experienced engineers and scientists developing solutions in a variety of areas that include Adaptive Machining, Intelligent Machining and Lean Manufacturing. These solutions are being implemented in members’ facilities and the ARTC’s Model Factory. Mr Matthew obtained his Bachelor of Engineering in Product Design and Manufacturing at the Loughborough University, United Kingdom. Before working at ARTC, he worked for 18 years with TTL, a company that is world renowned for its Adaptive Machining technology. At TTL, Mr Matthew designed, developed, implemented and supported numerous machining systems across the world for companies like Rolls Royce, IHI, GE and MTU. The machining systems involved developing technologies that, as well as Adaptive Machining, included Closed-Loop Process Control, Machine Tool Management and Automated Cell Management.
