MAKING MOTORING FUNGus Lagman GoldfeornSaRfeuDlersivingAAP PRESIDENT Case #1: Four teenagers died when, at 4 o’clock in the morning, their car crashed against an electric post, then a concrete wall, inside an exclusive subdivision. Upon impact, all four were thrown out of the car. They were apparently drinking at the subdivision park shortly before the incident occurred. Stories also abound that all the fatalities were too young to even legally drive a motor vehicle. Case #2: Four passengers, including the one driving, died and another four were brought to the hospital for serious injuries, when their SUV turned turtle along the SCTEX, thrice, according to some reports. Apparently, one of the tires blew up causing the loss of control of the vehicle. Case #3: Five passengers, including the driver, died when their SUV tried to overtake three vehicles but crashed head-on against an oncoming bus on the opposite lane. The driver was overtaking on a curve, according to some news reports. These are all actual cases, with real people dying. And all of them happened within the month of May. For sure, there were several more road crashes in the country last month, but the above were the most prominent. It is difficult to imagine how agonizing these must have been for the victims’ close relatives and friends. We can only offer our sincerest sympathies and condolences to them. For us at AAP, this series of preventable road crashes is truly disheartening. We have been advocating road safety for many years, with our activities and efforts intensifying last year as we joined the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020. We are doubly inspired to pursue this advocacy because the FIA or Federation Internationale de l’Automobile, to which AAP is affiliated, is a very strong supporter of the UN effort. In fact, aside from pushing auto clubs all over the world to organize projects related to making roads safer, the FIA also came up with the following GOLDEN RULES for safer driving. I WANT TO BE SAFE. I PROMISE TO: 1 BELT UP – all passengers are my responsibility. 2 RESPECT THE TRAFFIC CODE – rules are there to protect us all. 3 OBEY THE SPEED LIMIT – my car is made of metal, pedestrians and children are not. 4 CHECK MY TIRES – both for wear and for correct inflation, including the spare. 5 DRIVE SOBER – when I am drunk or on drugs, I am a danger on the road. 6 PROTECT MY CHILDREN – keep them safe in car seats. 7 PAY ATTENTION – calling and texting make me dangerous. 8 STOP WHEN I’M TIRED – getting there late is better than not at all. 9 WEAR A HELMET – motorbikes and bicycles don’t protect my head. 10 BE COURTEOUS AND CONSIDERATE – respect other drivers. Notice that all three cases cited above could have been prevented had the drivers heeded these rules. Specifically Rules 1 and 5 apply to Case #1; Rule 4 and possibly Rules 2 and 3 apply to Case #2; Rules 2 and 3 apply to Case #3. We at AAP urge all drivers to join hands with us in promoting safer driving. Perhaps we can become more effective advocates of road safety if we all become conscious of the worldwide objective of halving the number of deaths on our roads by 2020. Finally, let us all keep in mind and be guided by the Golden Rules for safer driving. AQ MAGAZINE 1

2012 MINI COUPE S How were they going to pull it off? What would it look like? What would it be like todrive? Would it be any good, especially since we so love the “standard” Cooper S 3-doorhatch? Well, it’s finally here. Let’s find out for ourselves. First off, the car looks strange. Well, peculiar is the more apt word. It’s definitely aMINI with the same (albeit tweaked) front fascia as well as the rear. What’s unusual is theroof which, to me, looks like a baseball cap worn backwards. Being an S, the Coupe rideson the larger set of wheels and tires. It does grow on you, and if you like attention, theCoupe is definitely you. Inside, they haven’t done much to alter the dashboard, seats, gauges, buttons andcontrols for the new model. What they have added, or at least incorporated from thenew Countryman S is the new MINI media player and screen at the center of that hugespeedometer that dominates the dashboard. The media center is controlled via a multi-directional knob on the center console. I wish they moved some of the buttons around, especially the ones at the base of the shifter for better ergonomics, but since this car is allabout retro style, I understand why they didn’t. Being a coupe means that this MINI is strictly a 2-seater. It’s a snug fit inside, and the lowered roof does make a challenging ingress for the more vertically endowed amongst us (not me), but they did shape the ceiling to accommodate what looks like another inch or two of height for the driver. For cargo space, there’s not much, but it’s pretty respectable all considered. The Coupe is essentially a lift-back, and allows bigger cargo by removing the trunk’s divider/cover. Being a Coupe S means this car gets the punchy 1.6 liter twinscroll turbo engine. The turbo engine is good for 184 horsepower and 260 Newton meters of torque, plenty of power to accelerate the Coupe S from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.1 seconds. With a 6-speed automatic transmission, top speed is pegged at 222 km/h. Driving the car around town, it’s okay. If I remember correctly, this new Coupe S feels much stiffer than the Cooper S hatchback we drove earlier. It does get quite uncomfortable if you find yourself on one of our many, imperfectly-paved city streets. On an open highway or expressway, however, the Coupe S comes alive in a big way. One thing they really didn’t change is the handling and the short overhangs, giving the Coupe S cornering reflexes similar to a go-kart Enter a winding mountain road and the price you paid driving in the city is well worthit. The suspension does everything it can and more to keep the car on course. One thingthey really didn’t change is the handling and the short overhangs, giving the Coupe Scornering reflexes similar to a go-kart, albeit a significantly larger one. Brakes feel great, and the twinscroll turbo really kicks in when you floor it out of the corners. The MINI Coupe S, exhilarating a drive as it may be, is not perfect. There are quite a few trade offs to achieve the Coupe form factor, and it’s really up to you whether or not you’ll like it... or are willing to live with the harsh ride around town. Personally? I’d still choose the MINI Cooper S hatchback, of course. And it’s faster too. AQ MAGAZINE 21

IDEAL PERFORMANCE CAR WHAT is the ideal driving car? The sort of car which brings a smile every time you get behind the wheel. That question is probably as old as the hills and has been endlessly debated over countless bottles of beer on countless occasions. Still, that question will probably get as many answers as the number of people it is posed to. Different strokes for different folks – a saying that could not be better applied than to this question of what it is that makes an ideal car.By JOSE ARMANDO EDUQUE AQ MAGAZINE 23

Finally, it must look great and that’schoice is biased toward performance; that, after non-negotiable.all, is what makes driving a pleasure. COVER STORY PRACTICALITY With all that performance from its engine, the Audi RS5 also delivers fuel economy – at 9.26 kms/litre of fuel. Its engine and drivetrain have been engineered for minimum friction and, in addition, the RS5 has an energy-recovery system (a la F1). The RS5 is also a passenger car and does not sacrifice passenger or cargo space to performance. The RS5 is a four-passenger car with a spacious boot. It is a car for the track or for family drives. It is a perfect blend of performance and practicality. DESIGN In my book, the A5 is the best-looking, best-designed vehicle in the Audi line-up. And it would seem that I am not alone in this assessment, as the current A5 has received more design and styling awards than any of its Audi siblings or, for that matter, its other German competitors. As I have said previously, its proportions are nigh perfect and it looks great from any and every angle. It looks as if it had been carved from a single block of steel. The RS5 is even better looking than the A5 as the wider tires and fender flares give it a more muscular look, reminding me of the rallying immortal, the Audi Quattro S1. The interior is typically Audi – a tasteful blend of leather, carbon fiber and wood accents26 AQ MAGAZINE

IDEAL PERFORMANCE CARDRIVING IMPRESSIONS Driving the RS5 is simply and totally a blast! In Comfort mode, it is completelydocile, yet with oodles of power. Shift to Dynamic mode, however, and all hell breaksloose. Driving-wise, the RS5 reminds me of a full-bore rally car. The acceleration isneck-snapping and the engine just never stops pulling. Cornering is flat, controlledand seemingly limitless. The size of the RS5 is ideal for throwing it around corners, and I have to confess that I kept the RS5 in Dynamic mode more often than notbecause the engine exhaust resonance was so addicting. And all these in a car withspace for four people, luggage and golf bags. The Audi RS5 is one hell of a car. It could be my ideal car. AQ MAGAZINE 27

Reeling from a massive recession in the late 90’s, many manufacturers and distributors probably thought the country was not a market for sports cars and supercars. What a difference 10 years can make. Over the next six pages, we present a rundown of the latest cars to have arrived or are set to arrive in the Philippine market. All of them are fast. All of them are beautiful. All of them are fun. Audi R8 GT SpyderWHO can ever forget the Audi R8 when it comes to supercars? Technically advanced from the company that takes almost fanatical pride in technology, internationallyhailed and co-star of the Iron Man films, the Audi R8 simply set the standards for a modern, usable supercar. Not tobe confused with the Le Mans prototype race car of the same name, the R8 road car was initially launched as a V8coupe, followed by V10 and roadster versions. The R8 GT Spyder (convertible) is the latest version of the venerable supercar. It’s built around Audi’s all-aluminum spaceframe for maximum rigidity, and has the more powerful V10 engine with 560 horsepower. Foracceleration? Zero to 100 km/h takes just 3.8 seconds. The launch also marked the arrival of the 458 Italia, the California, as well as the subsequent launch of the FF, the V12 powered hatchback from Ferrari... their first. Overseas, however, Ferrari gave the world a new car to replace the 599 series of grand touring cars: the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta. It has the same engine as the FF -- a 6.3-liter DOHC, 65-degree V12 engine that produces 730 horsepower, making it the most powerful Ferrari with road-legal status. Zero-to-100 km/h takes just 3.1 seconds. It’s also at the forefront of the latest technology from the Scuderia, sporting a 7-speed dual clutch transmission, ceramic brakes, magneto-rheological suspension, F1-Trac traction control, and an aluminum space frame chassis. As a result, the F12 Berlinetta lapped the Ferrari’s Fiorano test circuit quicker than the 599 GTO and faster than the Ferrari Enzo. Mercedes-Benz SLS Roadster GULLWING is a term that is uniquely Mercedes, and in 2010, the company revived the concept with the SLS AMG coupe. When MB decided to chop the top off the SLS, it had to re-engineer the car, and hence, the SLS AMG Roadster was born. The new model has the same specs as the SLS AMG coupe, with the same 6.2 liter V8 engine with 571 horsepower. MB strengthened its bottom end to handle the extra stress of having an open top. The gullwing doors have been removed (for obvious reasons) and replaced with conventional doors and came with a fabric roof. Other German manufacturers such as BMW and tricky, evenAudi have their own technologies to ensure that their cars -especially the high contradictorypowered models- are safe to drive for anyone. to an extent, when it comes Many of the other manufacturers in the sports car and super car classes to sports anddraw on decades of experience in motorsport competition. Porsche is one, super cars. Highand their cars utilize their own systems for safety, especially since the rear- horsepowerengine rear wheel drive layout of their iconic sports car, the 911, is inherently figures, highunstable. Things like Porsche Stability Management (PSM) and Porsche speeds and quickTraction Management (PTM) are standard equipment, along with the extra accelerationstability offered by four-wheel drive systems. don’t usually appear with the Ferrari is one of the leaders in such technologies, as expected from one word “safety” inof the oldest and most competitive teams in Formula One. Models such as the a sentence.California, 458 and FF use technologies like F1-Trac and an advanced stabilitycontrol system. The FF, the new hatchback from Ferrari, also uses 4-wheeldrive. Lamborghini is a supercar manufacturer known for cars named afterfamous fighting bulls. The brand’s earlier models like the Diablo and Countachwere notoriously difficult to drive hard, and thus the brand gained a reputationas ‘widow-makers’. Today’s Lambos are much safer than the supercars ofold, using the very latest in manufacturing technology such as carbon-fiberconstruction (for lighter weights and better strength than steel), as well asbeing fitted with sophisticated traction control, stability control and four-wheeldrive technologies.. More than that, many of the manufacturers of high performance machinesalso make it a point to host their customers at track days and driver trainingevents. BMW has their driver programs in Germany, while Mercedes has theAMG Driving Academy, teaching their customers how to handle their cars.Porsche has the Porsche World Roadshow to teach customers and participantshow to maximize the potentials of their 911s, Caymans and Boxsters, and toursvarious locations and countries to do so. On top of the many programs that manufacturers offer, there are manyschools that offer high performance driving lessons for a fee. Overseas, peoplecan enroll at the Skip Barber Racing School (U.S.) or at the Bondurant School ofHigh Performance Driving (U.S.). Locally, the leading organization that teachespeople the basics as well as advanced aspects of high performance driving isthe Tuason Racing School, headed by JP Tuason. Car safety may be particularly tricky, even contradictory to an extent, whenit comes to sports and super cars. High horsepower figures, high speeds andquick acceleration don’t usually appear with the word “safety” in a sentence. Nevertheless, premium and sports car manufacturers spend billions ofdollars to make their cars safer by developing high tech solutions to make thecar’s abilities more manageable. More to the point, long experience has taught us that machines -whetherin supercars or regular family compact cars- need to be treated and usedwith a lot of respect. Much like a horse will not respect a careless rider, a car(especially a powerful one) will not respect our driving abilities nor will it coddlea driver’s inadequacies, faults or bad habits. Road safety doesn’t just mean having a safer car. It begins and ends withus: the nuts behind the wheel. AQ MAGAZINE 2457

TOOFEATURE By VINCE PORNELOS TO HANDLE Supercars and safety THERE’S no doubt about it, cars are getting faster, more complex, and more dangerous. Especially in the field of supercars and sports cars, horsepower figures and speeds have increased so much that it begs the question: are they still safe? Over the years, manufacturers have developed and incorporated so many new systems to keep things in check, to ensure that customers that buy their cars have the very best in safety. After all, no manufacturer in the supercar or sportscar business want tragedies associated with their cars, and as a result, many sportscars have advanced systems as standard equipment on top of the usual airbags. >> TURN TO PAGE 47 48 AQ MAGAZINE
