HIGH HOLIDAY BULLETIN TEMPLE EMANUEL OF NORTH JERSEY A traditional, egalitarian, Conservative Congregation High Holidays 2019 Tishrei 5780 RABBINICAL REFLECTIONS High Holy Day Sermons Rosh Chodesh Elul 5779 5780/2019 Dear Friends, Rabbi Joseph H. Prouser Rosh Chodesh Elul, First Day Rosh Hashanah: initiating the month “Setbacks & Starlight: preceding Rosh Hashanah, begins a sacred, 40-day-long process A Tribute to Rona Ramon” culminating in Yom Kippur. This is a Second Day Rosh Hashanah: period of personal reconciliation and “Truth Be Told: spiritual preparation for the High Holy Days, devoted to the process of repentance Reclaiming an Embattled Virtue” and the inauguration of a productive new Kol Nidre: year. “Can You Hear Me Now? The name of this Hebrew month — Spiritual Lessons from My Cellphone” spelled alef-lamed-vav-lamed — is said to be an acronym, representing the initial Yom Kippur/Yizkor: letters in the verse Ani L’dodi, V’dodi Li: “The Oskar Goes to… “I am my beloved’s and my beloved is On Yizkor and Schindler and Lists” mine” (Song of Songs 6:3). Reflecting the Yom Kippur Afternoon Break Study Session: allegorical interpretation of the Biblical “Not By Bread Alone: book, this tradition frames Elul as a time Manna in Rabbinic (and other) Literature” to renew the loving relationship between God and the Jewish People… between each of us and our faith. The alef-lamed-vav-lamed pattern is similarly found in Esther 9:2 — (continued on page 2)

High Holidays 5780/2019 TEMPLE EMANUEL NEWS 3 FROM THE PRESIDENT HIGH HOLIDAY SERVICES 5780 As I think about the upcoming SELICHOT High Holidays, I think back to my childhood. As a little girl I Saturday, September 21 remember two shuls very close to each other: one where my Parents Selichot Program 9:00 p.m. went with my Dad’s side of the family and the other where my Selichot Services 10:30 p.m. Aunts and Uncles on my Mom’s side davened. My cousins, my brother and I all would all play outside ROSH HASHANAH running back and forth from one shul to the other. I remember the wonderful family dinners we had, and Sunday, September 29 my Aunt Marilyn’s delicious gefilte fish. As a teenager, my parents still went to an Orthodox shul Candle Lighting 6:23 p.m. down the block from where we lived, but I, with my friends, hung out at Temple Emanuel. Mostly Mincha/Maariv 6:30 p.m. outside, but occasionally going in and trying to find a seat in the balcony, for a little while. But it was Monday, September 30 mostly about being with friends, and “yes, we have to go to Aunt Lilly’s for dinner!” Of course, we all Shacharit 9:00 a.m. loved taking those days off from school. Today I look at the holidays with a completely Torah Service 10:30 a.m. different perspective. To me the most important aspect of this holiday is remembrance. I remember Shofar Service 11:30 a.m. those wonderful days of my youth, those dinners with family that I didn’t always want to go and wish I Sermon 11:45 a.m. could go back there. It’s easy to remember those old days when our Cantor Eddy Ehrlich chants Hineni; Tashlich (meet at Temple) 5:00 p.m. Oh! how my Dad loved that prayer. It’s easy to remember sitting with my Mom and young daughter followed immediately by Mincha/Maariv Judi while some of the familiar English prayers are read by Rabbi Prouser or some of our wonderful Candle Lighting 7:30 p.m. congregants. It takes me back, but it keeps me in the present as well. Both make me happy. I think our Tuesday, October 1 High Holiday services are a perfect mix of the nostalgia we have for the past and the present we are Shacharit 9:00 a.m. now in. I hope you will find that perfect mixture as you enjoy Torah Service 10:30 a.m. our services this year with Rabbi Joseph Prouser and Cantor Eddy Ehrlich. And I wish you a holiday filled Shofar Service 11:15 a.m. with family, good friends, good memories and strong and meaningful prayer. Sermon 11:30 a.m. YOM KIPPUR Tuesday, October 8 Candle Lighting 6:10 p.m. Kol Nidre 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 9 Shacharit 8:30 a.m. Torah Service 10:00 a.m. President’s Speech 11:00 a.m. Sermon/Yizkor 11:20 a.m. Study Program during afternoon break Mincha/Neilah 4:00 p.m. Shofar 7:10 p.m. A Happy, Healthy and Sweet New Year Followed by a light Break Fast Ellen Lipschitz, TENJ President
