About the cover . . .The color of the background is blue. Although thecolor blue is associated with various meanings, itis usually defined as the color of the clear sky andthe deep sea. Clear sky denotes the absence ofpollution. Deep sea is the lowest layer in theocean.Just like the extent of the color blue, chestdiseases may originate from the air we breatheand the deep abyss of the ocean in the form ofbends. Currently, myriads of treatments areavailable for respiratory illnesses ranging frommedical treatment to supportive care. In addition, management options are: surgery for both adultand pediatric population, hyperbaric medicine, stem cell and palliative care.
LUNG CENTER OF THE PHILIPPINES—PHYSICIANS’ ASSOCIATION Once again the Lung 9TH ANNUAL POSTGRADUATE COURSE Center of the Philippines Physicians Association (LCPPA) has come up with MESSAGE another scientific postgraduate course, its 9th one with the theme “Addressing Controversies in Chest Diseases.” Part of the course deals with new programs of the LCP like the hyperbaric chamber for decompression illness, the autologous dendritic cell vaccine for lung cancer, a product of the LCP Molecular Diagnostic and Cellular Therapeutics Laboratory, and minimally invasive thoracic surgery, a very specialized field which is one of the hospital's area of expertise, among others. I am glad to note that the course also deals with end-of-life issues which the pulmonary physician faces on a daily basis. Indeed, medical ethics cannot keep up with the rapid technological pace in medicine; the gray zone is muddled with ethical issues which is a virtual minefield to the uninitiated. I am optimistic that 2015 will be another banner year for the LCP. I hope that the LCP's Esophagus and Swallowing Center, an multidisciplinary and integrated unit will finally open. I also hope that the proposed expansion of the Sleep Laboratory will push through. Other units to be created are an Office for Science Diplomacy, a Genomic Medicine Unit, a Smoking Cessation Quitline, the Department of Thoracic Oncology, a separate Department of Thoracic Anesthesia, the Critical Airway Training Center, a Pain Management Unit, and others.
LUNG CENTER OF THE PHILIPPINES—PHYSICIANS’ ASSOCIATION The Department of Pulmonary Medicine will be launching their Healthy Airways Program for COPD and 9TH ANNUAL POSTGRADUATE COURSE asthma patients. The Department of Radiology will be embarking on an early Detection of Lung Cancer MESSAGE Program. The Department of Pathology and laboratory has already started its molecular lung cancer diagnostics. The creation of new units and programs will be matched by the physical expansion of the hospital with the addition of more patient rooms, personnel and offices. My best wishes to the participants and congratulations to the organizers. Jose Luis J. Danguilan, MD Executive Director
LUNG CENTER OF THE PHILIPPINES—PHYSICIANS’ ASSOCIATION The theme of the LCPPA 9TH ANNUAL POSTGRADUATE COURSE Postgraduate Course is appropriate with the present situation of our country. MESSAGE Management of pulmonary diseases is not limited within the confines of the chest and lungs. The effects of respiratory illnesses can transcend to the various organs-systems. At present, guidelines and other educational materials differ in their recommendations leaving the physicians confuse on selecting the right option for their patients. The panacea for effective and safe cure remains elusive. \"Addressing Controversies in Chest Diseases\" is the key to the pandora box that will help the physicians to decipher the code and give the best treatment for their patients. Congratulations to the Organizing Committee for a job well done. Zenaida Mariano, M.D. President LCPPA
LUNG CENTER OF THE PHILIPPINES—PHYSICIANS’ ASSOCIATION The theme addressing the 9TH ANNUAL POSTGRADUATE COURSE Controversies in chest medicine is very timely since we are faced with new MESSAGE trends in the practice of pulmonary medicine. Topics such as hyperbaric medicine, stem cell therapy , end of life issues , modern ventilatory support and risk assessment in pediatric surgery are a milestone to be learned. Likewise, the two workshops are a must for everybody to attend where we can learn more about new strategies on ventilatory support . The topics on Palliative Care especially on the end- of -life issues are a must so that physicians will be able to develop confidence on how to address sensitive and controversial issues pertaining to death and dying because many physicians don't know how to go about this issues on the level of the patient and the family. The last topic , 'The Last Craving: what can we eat', will be the first of its kind in any LCP activity because it teaches us correct nutritional practice to correct our very wrong belief in the food we eat as we want to be more healthy than eating to die. I welcome you all and enjoy the topics presented. Thank you. Sergio Andres Jr. Over-all Chairman 9th Post-Grad Course
LUNG CENTER OF THE PHILIPPINES—PHYSICIANS’ ASSOCIATION Greetings! 9TH ANNUAL POSTGRADUATE COURSE The goal of education is the MESSAGE advancement of knowledge and dissemination of truth, this is a quote from John F. Kennedy. Each year we hold our post graduate course with such an objective. Advances related to the pulmonary field has been at our sights and we will hone in to the core of topics we selected. Innovation has been the driving force of development and progress. The Lung Center of the Phil- ippines this year showcases the new service expansions as well as sharing the knowledge, experiences and controversies that come with them. I’m sure you will be fascinated by the topics we have arranged such as Single -Port (VATS) Video Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, Dendritic Cell Vaccine, Pediatric Risk Assessment, and Palliative Care. I would like to congratulate the organizing team for conjuring up this high powered post graduate course, with their perseverance and flawless attention to details. Participants will surely be glued to their seats. Again a GREAT JOB WELL DONE!!! Dennis Teo M.D. Chairman, Scientific Committee 9th Post-Grad Course
