Anna TheFriendly Ghost By Catherine Johnson 1
It was a gloomy day, as Catherine and herparents, Grace and Peter, were moving intotheir new house on Maple St. in Portland,Oregon. Catherine was so excited for her newroom. She raced inside to check out the house. 2
Catherine helped her parents unpack all theboxes and went to sleep. The first night in thenew house was rough for Catherine. Half waythrough the night, she heard some whispering.She called out, “Hello!” 3
A new guest! “Hello I’m sorry for waking you. I’m Anna,”said the ghost peeking out of the closet.Catherine pulled the sheets over her head,shaking with fear. Anna said, “I’m not hereto scare you, I just wanted to say welcometo the house.” Catherine slowly peeked outof the sheets, and eventually sat up. 4
“You’re not going to hurt me or scare me?”uttered Catherine with her voice shaking. “Noof course not. I want to be your friend,” saidAnna. Catherine’s fear slowly started to fadeaway. Anna told Catherine to go back to sleepand that they would talk again in the morning. 5
Catherine woke up on a rainy, Saturdaymorning to the yummy smell of chocolate chippancakes--her favorite. After breakfast,Catherine played with her dolls and had a teaparty with all her favorite stuffed animals.As Catherine was sitting at her table, Annathe ghost sat down in the empty chair, thatshe had saved for her. 6
“Hi Anna! Welcome to my tea party. Want sometea?” said Catherine with a big smile on her face.“Yes please darling, thank you,” said Anna.“Why are you a ghost?” whispered Catherine.“Well, I was a wife and mother a long time agoduring the 1950s. I was really unhappy, so Idecided to become a ghost,” Anna softy said. “Youlook so pretty in your princess dress! Do you wantto be a princess when you grow up?” exclaimedAnna, trying to change the subject.“Thank you! No, I want to be like my mommy whenI grow up,” said Catherine. 7
“What does your mommy do?” asked Anna.“She stays at home and takes care of me whenmy daddy goes to work,” answered Catherine.Anna’s smiled disappeared and she thought longand hard about what to say to Catherine. Shehad been a housewife when she was human, butwas very unhappy. Her goal is to help Catherinediscover a passion to have as a career throughouther li fe. 8
Anna exclaimed, “Catherine, you could be ateacher, a chef, a singer, or whatever you want tobe!”Catherine thought long and hard about thoseideas, but nothing stood out to her. She proudlysaid, “My mommy is a good cook and she does avery good job cleaning my room. I want to cleanand cook just like my mommy!” Anna didn’t knowhow to tell Catherine that she was a housewifelike her mommy, but was very unhappy. 9
Anna decided that she would try to explain toCatherine how not all mommies like beinghousewives. As she thought of how to explainthe news to Catherine, they finished their teaparty. As the day went on, Catherine playedwith her cleaning set and pretended to becleaning her room: dusting, vacuuming, andputting her clothes away. Anna watched fromafar. She knew that she needed to save herfrom the unhappiness she went through. Annadecided to go spy on Catherine’s mother, Grace. 10
Anna watched Grace write in her journal.When Grace left the bedroom, Anna went overto read the journal. As she read the journal,she saw how sad Grace was, and how all sheever dreamed about was being a teacher.Anna knew that it was her duty to makeCatherine realize that there is more to lifethan being a housewife. 11
After Catherine got ready for bed, hermother read her a bedtime story andtucked her in. Anna came in to talk toCatherine after the story. Anna said, “Iread your mother’s journal, and she hatesbeing a housewife, and wants to be ateacher. I want to show you something.Come with me.” 12
Catherine and Anna tiptoed to herparent’s room. Grace was crying whilewriting in her journal. Catherine looked atAnna with watery eyes and said, “Mymommy is sad. I don’t want to be sad likeher when I grow up.” 13
Anna and Catherine walked back intoCatherine’s room. Anna tucked Catherine intobed. Catherine whispered softly, “Thank youfor being such a great friend.”Anna responded, “Of course! I have nowcompleted my goal of saving a young girl frombeing a housewife when she grows up. I cannow be at peace.” A light shined down uponAnna and she slowly faded away wavinggood bye. 14
