PRINCIPAL’S ADDRESS As a school community, we are grateful to have been able to engage in such a rich range of learning opportunities this term. After the delayed start, we have certainly had a very eventful eight weeks! Those of you who are new to the Rossmoyne Senior High School community will have discovered that barely a week goes by when something interesting or exciting doesn’t happen. A wonderful highlight showcasing our iCARE values this term, was the Year 7 Picnic where we welcomed our Year 7 students and their families into our school community. This thoroughly enjoyable and festive event enabled students and parents the opportunity to connect and engage with teachers from all Learning Areas, and with one another, in fun, educational activities. Early in the term we welcomed back many of our Year 12 students from 2020 to celebrate their excellent WACE results in both ATAR and VET programs. WACE (ATAR) dux Vedant Shar presented a motivational speech to our current Year 11 and 12 students. The School Ball, held at the Hyatt Regency Ballroom in late February was a spectacular event, thoroughly enjoyed by our Year 12 students and no doubt a highlight of the social school calendar. The House Swimming Carnivals held at school, and the A-Grade Interschool carnival held at HBF Stadium, saw some outstanding individual performances and wonderful team efforts. Thank you to those parents who were able to attend the carnivals and support our students. During the term, students across the school have engaged in a range of valuable co-curricular and extra-curricular activities to support and enhance their learning. Events held at school, such as Harmony Week in Week 7 and HASS Week in Week 9, have been educational and engaging for students. This term, we also welcomed parents into the school for Parent-Teacher Interview Day. As always, the opportunity to discuss your child’s progress and achievement with you was greatly appreciated. Thank you to all of the families who attended or phoned in to one of the six and a half thousand interviews held on the day. We are particularly grateful to the Senior Years students who volunteered their time to assist. As we approach the school holidays, I sincerely thank our students for such a terrific start to the year and families for your contribution and support. I wish you all a restful and safe break, J S B anet ilburn arker RSHS (Acting) Principal Ms Janet Silburn Barker 2 The Rossmoyne Quarterly : A Term In Review | Term 1, 2021

ASPIRATION & ACHIEVEMENT Have Sum Fun Maths Competition MATHEMATICS Week 6 and Week 7 saw Rossy student represent the school at the Have Sum Fun maths competition. Our Year 11 and Year 12 representatives fought hard for a second place. Some may argue a 1st place would have been more fitting, with the results coming down to a ruling that ‘179’ was an unacceptable answer for the age of a person. The Year 9 and Year 10 teams came second and fourth, both with a neat 30 points. Year 7 and Year 8 teams narrowly missed out on placing, finishing in 5th and 6th position with 27 points - just a couple of points behind the leaders’ 29. 7

ASPIRATION & ACHIEVEMENT Rossmoyne Students Share Youth Voice HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES In Week 7, four Year 8 students Aleya Voon, Aimee Chen, Ruphie Yang and Gerda Lededeva gave a deputation at the Canning City Council OCM in front of about 60 community members. This was no ordinary council meeting, 95% of people in attendance were there to directly, hear, speak on, or give views about the ‘Shelley Beach Park’ upgrades. Councillors and community members spoke passionately for both sides. Aleya, Aimee, Ruphie and Gerda put forward their views of support and recommended one of the more ‘progressive’ options, hoping to give a real ‘youth perspective’ on the situation. As a result of their deputation, a number councillors, the Mayor, and community members have contacted the school to comment on the pride they felt in watching on as the students actively participated in their community. These students have been praised for their intelligent and well-presented arguments. This visit to council has come as the result of a 2020 end of year HASS ‘problem based learning’ project. Well done to all involved for voicing their concerns and participating in active citizenship!
