As Term 3 draws to a close, I could not be more proud of the spirit and resilience our students, families and staff have shown coming out of such an uncertain time. We have well and truly bounced back from a very disrupted Term 2 and I have been so pleased to see our excursions, student performances, work experience opportunities, assemblies, and other activities resume. As you are aware, some of our events became ‘virtual’. A big thank you to our students and families who have supported the school in finding new ways of doing things, including our virtual Parent-Teacher Interview Day and our socially distanced Academic Excellence Assemblies. Feedback has been very positive and will guide our thinking for 2021. We have made a conscious effort to keep connected by increasing our Facebook presence and providing video and photos via our website. I hope you have enjoyed viewing student achievements and what has been happening in the school. At the heart of our school is our students. I have been returning to this phrase a lot this term because now, more so than ever, we have been reminded that the school would not be the same without our wonderful students. Without their adaptability, positivity and patience this term the road to COVID recovery would have been far more challenging. An area we have had to significantly rethink has been our transition of Year 6 students to our school. I thank all of the students who have been a part of the suite of videos now on our website. The end of this term has seen us reach out to our surrounding Primary Schools to touch base in preparation for their Term 4 Orientation Day, we’re looking forward to these fresh young faces making their first appearance on our school grounds. As we welcome new faces, we’re also preparing to farewell our 2020 Graduating Class. The Year 12 Valedictory will be held in October at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. To these bright young adults, I hope you enjoy the next part of your journey – whether you’re heading to university, accepting an apprenticeship, utilising your hard earned certificates in the workplace, or taking some time to reset – stay curious, keep learning and enjoy the ride. I am excited to be introducing the school to our new publication. This is the first edition of our Rossmoyne Quarterly and I hope it is an apt celebration of student aspiration and achievement, and a well-deserved recognition of the motivation and skill of current Rossmoyne Senior High School students. Congratulations to all of the students showcased in this, the first M ilannaedition of the Rossmoyne Quarterly. Student Spotlight Every term students at Rossmoyne Senior High School are aiming high and achieving great things in academia, sport, arts, community and more. This term we’re celebrating the following students who are aspiring to reach their full potential in the worlds of food, music, debating and visual arts. Natalie Chua Masterchef in the making Food Science ATAR Year 12 Food Science and Technology ATAR students were required to develop a food product to fill a specific gap in the market based on their research. Natalie Chua took on this challenge with outstanding drive and enthusiasm. Inspired by the television show MasterChef, as well as a rousing start of Semester speech by Ms Heberle that asked ‘What do you want to be known for?’, Natalie realised that the shows’ recipes were unattainable for the home cook. With this as the ‘problem’, Natalie was determined to find a solution. She took the “The Snitch” and “Down the Rabbit Hole” recipes and managed to modify them to be suitable for preparation in a home kitchen and using basic equipment. This was technically difficult and called on significant research into the science of food preparation. Natalie also developed a marketing plan to sell the products as readymade items in a new “Masterchef” section in a supermarket where the freshmade desserts could be purchased by customers. Natalie’s marketing plan and costing was very sophisticated, demonstrating industry standards. Natalie, along with other Food Science ATAR students, presented her Product Development Project in a Home Economics Showcase to over 100 students and staff. Those lucky enough to taste Natalie’s creations were delighted with the visual excitement of the dishes, and all the delicious flavour. We are not surprised to hear that she has since been been approached by Master Chef recruiters! 9
Martina Erpen This humble yet super talented student has achieved so much this year. She is an amazing vocalist and has performed solos at several public events in 2020. Martina has been involved in Enter the Stage and Follow Yours Dreams in 2020, performing and placing 1st or 2nd on multiple occasions. Martina has also been selected to sing the National Anthem for the Wildcats Show Troupe. It’s no surprise that she took out top spot at Rossy’s got Talent in Week 8 - best wishes for all future performances, Martina! UN Youth Finalists Meher Virik, Hau Chien Tang, Sean Kong and Zaynab Alam competed at the UN Youth Evatt Competition semifinals in August. The competition engages students across Australia in world affairs and issues through debating. These two teams were selected out of 500 competing students across WA. Our Year 11 team Zaynab and Sean made it to the grand finals meaning they were among the top 15 in the state! Maybe we’ll see them place in the top 5 in 2021!? Bobby Zheng Year 12 student Bobby Zheng continued his run in Term 3 and displayed another artwork at the META Art Exhibition in Northbridge during August. Bobby’s work ‘Continuance’ is an acrylic painting on raw plywood and depicts a man contemplating his own mortality. META was one of few exhibiting opportunities not affected by COVID-19 restrictions. We’ll certainly be keeping an eye out for more of Bobby’s work after he graduates! 10 The Rossmoyne Quarterly : A Term In Review | Term 3, 2020

Haylee, Maralee and Clyde shared their camp highlights: Haylee Nguyen:“RYPEN has taught me so much. I did things I didn’t know I could do and met so many new people I would have never met without this enrichment camp. Prior to coming to camp, I was worried that I would be bored and downloaded tons of episodes of shows to watch on my smart-phone. But what I found was that I didn’t touch my phone at all! I would definitely recommend RYPEN to anyone who is interested in a fun personal growth experience and I’ve learned so much about how to effectively work in a team.” Maralee Newing: “The highlight of my experience was the discussions at the end of each group activity. My group engaged in the discussion and I felt as if I had made new friends for life. I’m usually afraid of speaking in big group settings, but I found myself engaging more and comfortably speaking my thoughts to others. I also found myself leading the group more rather than being a follower. I feel more prepared to achieve my goals thanks to RYPEN.” Clyde Hoang: “I never was the type to trust in my team members, I’d rather do things alone but RYPEN taught me how to trust in friends. Through workshops and hands on activities, even just talking between our teams, I felt more open to others. I was more open to ideas, more open to communicating, more open to just working as a team. It’s a skill that is helpful for future Student Central Staff accompanied a group of House Captains and Student Councillors from Years 8, 9, 11 and 12 to the Youth Mental Health Forum in September. Students gathered ideas to bring back to school and assist staff in developing the student wellbeing program for 2021. The students were lucky to hear from four key note speakers and attend a variety of break out sessions that covered topics including exam stress, anxiety, self-awareness, and the importance of asking for help. The eight students felt they got a lot out of the day and will now work to pool their ideas and explore how they can translate to whole school, year group and small group activities for the coming year. 12 The Rossmoyne Quarterly : A Term In Review | Term 3, 2020
