The Rossmoyne Quarterly | Term 4, 2022 hwHehoaemrrteeisitshe This term in Home Room the students have been learning resilience through new skills. Each homeroom learnt new skills and then went to a buddy Home Room to teach and learn a new skill. There was lots of connection and collaboration through learning origami, juggling, fast folding clothes and tie tying.

The Rossmoyne Quarterly | Term 4, 2022 Ringing of the bell 2022 Staff and students lined the corridors in Week 2 as the Class of 2022 completed a final lap of honour around the school. In this well-loved tradition, students walk the school whilst ringing the original school bell - symbolising the start of their final week as Rossmoyne Senior High School students. YGeoaord1b2yse The final days of school for the Class of 2022 included a night of celebration at their dinner dance, a final Year 12 assembly, a water fight on the oval, a BBQ, and a formal farewell at the Valedictory Ceremony on Sunday 23 October.

The Rossmoyne Quarterly | Term 4, 2022 Valedictory celebration On Sunday 23 October the Class of 2022 enjoyed their final farewell at Valedictory. Hosted at Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre, the formal evening saw students and their families enjoy music and dance performances. The class celebrated each other’s success and received the Principal’s handshake along with their certificate of completion. Congratulations to those students who received awards on Valedictory night, as well as those who were recognised with awards presented during the final assembly on October 20. The Vocational Education and Training (VET) Dux Award went to Katie London. The Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) Dux Award went to Hariprasad Krishnamurthy. The Parents’ and Citizen’s Association Diligence Award, for outstanding commitment to learning, went to Kahlira Barry-Hardy. The Sports Ambassador Award, for being a role model in school sport participation, went to Phoebe Lewis. The Rotary All Rounder Award, for high levels of citizenship, academic and sporting achievement went to Danyl Mathews. The Workplace Learning Industry Award, for excellence in Vocational Education and Training and recognition by an employer, went to Phoebe Lewis. The Parliamentarian’s Award, for outstanding contribution to the wider community, went to Elise Powell. The iCARE Award, for consistent demonstration of Rossmoyne Senior High School’s values; integrity, connection, high aspiration, respect and excellence, went to Caleb Koh. The Leadership Award, for excelling in the area of student leadership, went to Rhea Shah.

The Rossmoyne Quarterly | Term 4, 2022 VET award nominees Six Year 12 students were nominated for School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) awards recognising their outstanding efforts in completing Certificate qualifications, attending Workplace Learning and completing one-day-a- week external training whilst balancing class work at school. All of these learning opportunities see VET students gain credits toward their WACE certificates. Congratulations to our SCSA award nominees: Lachlan B. who gained experience at One 20 Productions and completed his Sound tech Certificate III Music and Sound Production and a Certificate IV in Music. Tiaana W. who gained experience at Vivid Property Group and completed a Certificate III and IV in Business. Kahlira B. who gained experience at The Sporting Globe, completed a Certificate II in Hospitality, and won Hospitality Group Training School- based Trainee of the Year Award in both 2021 and 2022. Joseph A. who gained experience at Juniper Aged Care and completed a Certificate III and IV in Health Science Foundations. Harrison W. who gained experience at Fremantle Plumbing Service, completed a Certificate II in Plumbing and secured an apprenticeship. Katie L. who gained experience at Willetton Primary School and completed a Certificate III and IV in Education Support. Our students raced hard and competed well to come away with a score of 728 points, earning them fourth place overall. The Rossmoyne Quarterly | Term 4, 2022 Aus robotics champs Rossy Robotics Club members Long Feng, Alex Chen, Brandan Didsman, Vishwa Sabarinathan, Isabelle Tang, Matthew Yao, Shing Feng and Cruz Barry-Hardy became the national RoboCup Junior Australia soccer champions after two days of nail-biting competition in Adelaide in October. They team coded in C++/Linux to program their Mindstorm EV3 soccer-playing robots. Volleyball giving back During the October school holidays, two former Rossy students came back to lend their expertise to the Year 11/12 Gold Coast Tour teams as they prepared for Nationals. Marty Suan, who currently runs Spiker Beach Volleyball Club in California, and Jack Halley, who plays for the Queensland Pirates in the AVL, both gave up their time whilst in Perth to share their experience with our students.

There were chalk rangoli, henna, music and dance performances by students Tannisha Dalal, Sreesha Karlapudi, and Heli Panchal to a large crowd. Staff also enjoyed a Diwali morning tea hosted by the Staff Association including Samosa Chaat with Chickpeas. Gold is the most challenging level of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award and requires participants to learn a new skill, improve their physical well being, volunteer in their community and experience a team adventure camp. Lil' Rossy Our Year 11 Certificate II Community Services students and 'Rossy Reach Out' volunteers developed a fun and engaging resillience program to support Year 6s with their transition from primary to high school. An in- school session saw Year 6s from Rossmoyne Primary School come across the bridge to join in. Onigiri, oishii! Year 7 Japanese students learnt about Japanese food and drink, including how to read and create recipes using Japanese language. They had a ball making traditional Japanese onigiri (riceballs). In Week 3, drama club members enjoyed their first-ever night out to the theatre, attending a preview performance of Spongebob The Musical at the Regal Theatre in Subiaco. Students were treated to a dazzling, dynamic show, telling a fun and intriguing tale of Spongebob's quest to save the day through a series of bubbly, boppy songs and dances. English class go to prison Some Year 8 English students attended a two-day picture book workshop at The Literature Centre in Fremantle this term. The centre is housed in the historic Fremantle Prison where the students heard stories from the prison’s infamous past and read some of the amazing picture books written and illustrated by local West Aussies and Australians. This opportunity was designed to encourage our students’ own creativity to produce their original books.

The Rossmoyne Quarterly | Term 4, 2022 Ancient artifact artwork In Year 7 Humanities and Social Science students studied ancient Rome, selecting an ancient Roman artefact and researching the reasons behind its creation and its legacy. The class then made models of their artifacts of choice. Exploring science Students got hands-on in science with a range of activities this term. Year 8s investigated the physical and chemical properties of different elements and substances. Year 9s discovered the effects of mirrors and prisms on light reflection and refraction. Year 10s investigated the change in Ohm’s Law when connecting electrical components in parallel and series curcuits. And Year 10 STEPPS students made jewellery via electroplating, and explored aerodynamics with bottle rockets.

The class studied Claire's book 'The Sky So Heavy' as part of their unit on the genre of speculative fiction. They spoke about Claire's process for creativity, how to get inspiration, build character and conflict, and how she keeps readers hooked! The class asked questions about writing for young adults, the lucrative business of publishing, and whether Claire has plans to adapt the novel to the big screen!

The Rossmoyne Quarterly | Term 4, 2022 Welcome! More than 400 Year 6 students joined us for the start of their orientation to high school in Week 9. They took taster classes across Science, Maths, English, HASS, Languages, Art, Technologies and Phys Ed - getting the full high school experience. Debate champions 2022 Rossmoyne’s debating team was awarded the 'Champion School' title in the 2022 Fremantle District Interschool Debating Competition! Our Rossy debating teams in Years 7 to 10 claimed this title by securing the most debate victories across all year groups throughout the season. As an added bonus, our Year 9 and Year 10 teams completed the entire 2022 season undefeated!

The Rossmoyne Quarterly | Term 4, 2022 iCARE Week Week 7 was a student-run celebration of the school's iCARE values of integrity, connection, aspiration, respect and excellence. Break time activities throughout the week brought students and staff together to connect and celebrate as a whole school. On Monday, iCARE Week officially started with a celebration of the school value 'integrity' in the amphitheatre. Student-run festivities included exploration of different interests at the clubs fair, celebration of talents with student performances, and good vibes at the polaroid photo booth, henna station, and face painting booth. Tuesday saw big crowds gather in the amphitheatre for an opportunity for students to 'dunk' their teacher. Our Hospitality students served up an array of delicious drinks to celebrate 'connection'. On Wednesday, all players 'aspired' to win at the inaugural staff V students iCARE walking soccer session. Game 1 saw a thrilling match end in a penalty shoot out, with ultimate victory going to the student team. In Game 2, the staff managed a win against the students. On Thursday, we celebrated 'respect' with Market Day. The amphitheatre was buzzing with student-run businesses selling everything from jewellery to scrunchies and bubble tea. On Friday, students celebrated 'excellence' with bubble soccer, music and slushies during break. The week ended with a splash at the whole- school water fight during Period 5!

The Rossmoyne Quarterly | Term 4, 2022 Young leaders Later in the term, our Student Councillors and House Captains took part in two days of training that challenged and supported them to develop their leadership skills. The group learnt about communication and leadership styles, explored their own unique strengths and weaknesses, were visited by former Australian politician Sean L'Estrange, and built their teamwork and with an Amazing Race challenege around Fremantle. We look forward to seeing these skills in action in 2023!

Our choir, string ensemble, and soloists delivered a joyful set of old and new tunes that had hands clapping and smiles shining.

The posters have been a long time in the making, informed by soil science research across Term 4. Impressive instrumentalists Our Year 8 Quintet impressed visiting parents and Instrumental Music School Services (IMSS) staff when they performed at an IMSS information evening in Week 8. The annual event welcomes the families of students who have been selected to take part in the IMSS musical instrument program at primary school. Quintet performers Brian, Amos, Aidan, Joshua and Shuen were invited to perform as a representation of students from the local area who are excelling on their instruments and learning through IMSS.

The Rossmoyne Quarterly | Term 4, 2022 Going for Gold Coast On Friday of Week 8 we waved goodbye to our interstate volleyballers as they jetted off to the Gold Coast to compete in the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup, for the first time since 2019. The competition is the largest school-based sporting event in the Southern Hemisphere, and the draw includes nearly 4000 participants in 133 teams from around Australia and overseas. Six Rossmoyne teams including 59 students, 4 staff and 12 volunteer coaches set off for the Gold Coast on December 3. The week-long event kicked off on on Monday December 5, and Rossmoyne teams competed in the higest division of the Year 9 (Boys), Year 9 (Girls), Year 10 (Boys), Year 10(Girls), Open (Boys) and Open (Girls) competitions. Our six teams played more than 60 games across the tournament, with experiencing both highs and lows of wins and losses. Under extreme pressure, our students upheld the Rossmoyne spirit – celebrating the highs together and developing their resilience, leadership and collaboration skills through the lows. The teamwork, respect and sportsmanship displayed all week was a credit to those involved. The support and encouragement shown throughout the tournament by the students was a tour highlight, along with: The Year 9 Girls Silver Medal win. Rossmoyne placing 6th overall out of more than 130 competing schools. Rossmoyne alumni Biancka Morton and Chelsea McNeill being recognised for their 10 Year Service Awards. The culture of the Volleyball Program with former students donating so much of their time and energy into giving back can not be undervalued - the connection it fosters in the school is amazing. Way to go Rossy!

The Rossmoyne Quarterly | Term 4, 2022 MacNeill House pride MacNeill held its last assembly for 2022 on Monday in Week 10. Awards were given for MacNeill house members for demonstrating connection, teamwork, service and resilience this year. A special mention went to Emily E. for being the top MacNeill Student for Term 4 and MacNeill 19 for being the top homeroom.
