Color Psychology: How Colors Affect Your Emotions By Celeste Payne We’ve all had the experience of walking into a room and saying, “Ahh,” as if it’s the most restful place to be. And then there are those times when, upon entering an abode, we comment, “Wow!” Maybe it’s the underlying feeling of energy in the room. But what makes us have these strong, spontaneous reactions to our surroundings? Your reactions and psychological responses could be due largely in part to the colors used in the décor and design of the space. Although all psychological experts don’t agree, many believe there is such a thing as color psychology. Historically, different cultures have regarded color as having the power to affect your mood, feelings, health, and even your behavior. So, if you want to change the mood you experience in your home, consider the following information. It might help you achieve the ambiance you’re seeking in your cherished spaces. Blue. If blue is your favorite color, you might not be too surprised to read that this particular color will aid healing and help manage pain. Blue can also promote feelings of tranquility. Green. Because green brings thoughts of the outdoors and the wonders of nature, it’s believed to bring about feelings of serenity, restfulness, and perhaps even joy. Some find that the color green decreases stress and increases feelings of relaxation. Orange. Orange is said to promote healthy lungs and produce energy and vitality in people. Closely related to red, orange is considered a warm color that brings excitement. You know it’s true—when you walk into a room that’s painted orange, it definitely grabs your attention.

Yellow. The color of the sun produces feelings of warmth and brightness. Like orange, yellow cannot be ignored. It’s even been referred to as the most “visible” hue in the color spectrum. If you want to “cheer up” your kitchen, yellow might be the right choice for you. Red. Full of drama and mystery, a room painted red is evocative of emotions such as comfort, intensity, warmth, and even love. Black. Although you may not consider black a true color, it’s an important hue. The color black is formed due to a complete lack of light. In terms of your feelings, black can induce a gamut of strong emotions. You might experience sensuality, mourning, or sadness when you’re exposed to black. In film, you’ll notice that black is often used to represent a deep, dark, ominous character. Ultimately, black is not only a conflict in terms but brings about conflicting feelings for many as well. White. The antithesis to black, white evokes feelings of innocence. It’s customary to have a lot of white in hospitals as the color has come to indicate sterility and cleanliness. Although white walls are often viewed as boring by some, the color is often used to trick the eye when walking into a room. Want a room to appear bigger? Put some white paint on the walls. If you want a dark space to appear lighter, white is your solution. Using white as a trim color in a room will make your wall color “pop.” Your feelings in a white room will run the gamut from feeling bright to being overwhelmed by the overload of light and space around you. It may be bland on its own, but white can enhance the appearance of deeper colors and hues used with it. So, how you feel when you see white depends on how much white is used and the way the other colors in the room are presented. Colors are powerful in that they do affect how you feel. To lift your mood, bring about feelings of tranquility, or induce excitement, use these basics of color psychology to decorate your home. Encourage the mood and feelings you strive for just by skillfully selecting wall and accessory colors! Coach Elizabeth Crawford www.wisdomandinsights101.com 7 Tips to Overcome Imposter Syndrome Have you ever felt like you don’t belong, or everyone is going to find out that you don’t deserve your achievements? If you can relate to those feelings of chronic self-doubt, you’ve probably experienced imposter syndrome. You’re not alone - studies suggest 70% of people experience imposter syndrome at some point in their career. Overall, imposter syndrome stems from a high sense of self-doubt. Instead of attributing your success to your skills, you might downplay your success and attribute it to luck. Signs You Might Be Suffering from Imposter Syndrome Do you relate to any of these patterns? Perfectionism. You may set high goals for yourself. Because your goal is perfection, the smallest mistakes may make you feel like a failure. Attribute success to luck. You downplay your success because you do not believe you deserve the success, or you believe you are just lucky. Unable to recognize success. Instead of celebrating your accomplishments, you worry that others will see “the truth” about your skills and abilities. Fear of failure. Because of a fear of failure, you may set challenging goals and be disappointed when those goals fail. You might also take on limited tasks because you fear failure. Difficulty asking for help. You might have difficulty asking for help because you believe asking for help will show that you’re wrong or unqualified. Experiencing imposter syndrome can limit your confidence to go after new opportunities because you feel that you do not deserve it. Luckily, there are some steps you can take to give yourself more credit and start overcoming those feelings of self-doubt.

Steps to Overcome Imposter Syndrome 1.Acknowledge imposter feelings. Recognize when you start feeling like an imposter. Instead of engaging with your thoughts of self-doubt, acknowledge that it is a normal response. 2.Understand the root of the cause. Why do you think you feel like you don’t belong? Is it due to a fear of failure? Do you believe that you don’t deserve success? Why or why not? 3.Focus on facts, not feelings. When you start feeling like a fraud, focus on positive facts. For example, maybe you were chosen for a job interview because of your qualifications. 4.Ask yourself if that thought helps or hinders you. Does feeling fraudulent help or hinder you? Is that what you want to be? What kind of person do you want to be? 5. Reframe your thoughts. Instead of telling yourself that you don’t deserve success, reframe your thoughts to give yourself more credit and enjoy the experience. Own your accomplishments instead of attributing them to “luck” or “help from others.” Instead of setting impossibly high standards, set smaller goals so you can enjoy the process. Remind yourself there will never be the “perfect time.” Accept that we all have to start somewhere. 6.Accept that it’s okay to make mistakes. Instead of fearing failure, develop a healthy response to making mistakes. Accept that it’s normal to make mistakes and learn from each mistake instead. 7.Reach out for support. Having a safe space to receive support will help you reduce feelings of being an imposter. When you feel imperfect, make a mistake, or receive a compliment, your first instinct may be to hide. Instead, start reaching out to an encouraging mentor, coach, or colleague for support. Say “thank you” when you receive a compliment. Practice being honest when you feel imperfect, embarrassed, or have made a mistake. Share and celebrate your achievements and successes. Imposter syndrome can make you feel like you’re not good enough, you don’t belong, or you are undeserving. But it’s important to remind yourself that learning and making mistakes do not make you a fraud - it makes you human.
