DISTORTION OF REALITY PHOTOGRAPHY: MANPREET & MAYUR STYLING : MANSI JAIN A Vision Beyond the Cave deals with our shrouded reality within the cave and attempts to explore life and possibilities beyond its restrictions. And explores a possible other reality literally and through metaphor. In that sense, like Socrates, it discards the concept of ‘eu-a-mousi’ (which is to live ‘happily without the muses’ and to believe only what is tactile is real) and aims for a world open to our imagination. Whether it be a distorted somewhat broken reality or the ideal version of it. Our understanding of reality is not ideal itself, since it's twice removed from its ideal nature. What we see might only be the reflection of or distorted version of the \"true\", \"ideal\" reality. A VISION BEYOND THE CAVE Taken from The Republic, by Plato, the Allegory of the Cave is a written dialogue between Socrates and Glaucon. It describes a gathering of people who have lived chained in a cave all of their lives. Their only experience of reality is watching shadows cast on a wall by the world passing behind them, and their naming of these shadows. For Socrates, the philosopher is a prisoner freed from the cave who comes toperceive the true form of reality, which lies outside the cave’s confines. Carrying the allegory further, he believes that all of humanity lives inside a cave and that every object and event we encounter is a ‘shadow’ of its ideal form. The few human beings who do manage to climb out of this cave to encounter the real world are met with scorn and 07 ridicule when they try and explain this alternative vision to those still in the cave.

The Soft Power OF THE ROMANTIC DRESS Our Notions Of Power Dressing Are Changing, And So Rises The Armour - like Romantic Dress PHOTOGRAPHY: MANPREET & MAYUR STYLING : MANSI JAIN Once upon a time, the word romance feeling and projecting power is associated was synonymous with frivolity, with what we have to say, what we stand for, girlishness and whimsy. In 2020, and how we appear,” says Dr Rosie Findlay, we don’t need to reject our femininity to be course leader in MA Fashion Cultures at the strong or powerful and, as is always the way, London College of Fashion. what we wear reflects our evolved attitudes. “What kinds of clothing makes any given Far from power suits and bold shoulders, or individual feel powerful is subjective, figure-hugging 'bombshell' dresses - looks dependent on how they feel about that have typically characterised power themselves, how they conceive of power dressing - romantic dresses are on the rise, and how that translates into textures, imbuing a softer strength that offers a silhouette and the feel of clothes on one's different kind of armour. body.” “The conversations we're having as a society about power and gender, identity 25 and politics, closely relate to clothing and

The Demand For Romantic Dresses Is Increasing. T he more contemporary versions of the romantic dress can be viewed as adult versions of children’s party dresses, which could be problematic when viewed through the prism of dressing grown women like children. But, as Dr Findlay points out, the volume of these looks provides a crucial point of difference. “These dresses take up space, they take light colours, tulle, ribbons, and place them on adult bodies, perhaps reframing the 'frivolity' of these textures and colours,” she says. “So, they could be read as claiming something - a vision of femininity, taking up space in the world - that could make someone feel powerful.” Although fashion’s approach to modern romance is varied, there is one commonality: comfort. These dresses billow and waft – while the silhouettes differ, they’re roomy and allow for maximum movement. These aren’t looks that sculpt or compress the body; they’re designed to be lived in on an everyday basis. They’re often teamed with boots, chunky sandals or trainers, which not only add modernity, but also ease. What the wave of romantic dresses offer is an alternative to dictated codes, another way of dressing for power, and it’s up to consumers, employers and designers to respond accordingly – to understand that romantic femininity is not a weakness. 26
