Goodbye, summer, you have been good to us! Letter from the EditorF all is here! Sort of! As I’m writing this, the temperatures are noticeably cooler this week. I’m hopeful this is a sign that the summer heat is leaving us for much more tolerable fall weather. One can hope! We’re really excited about this issue of Brentfield Life! We love meeting your neighbors and featuring them in these pages. This month we have two Families of the Month. Their story is unique and a wonderful example of how this great neighborhood and amazing schools cultivate wonderful families who really love this place. You’ll also meet your neighborhood t-shirt designer and maker. Plus, we know school as already started. And maybe you are still feeling the hectic morning rush, even a few weeks in to the school year. So . . . we’ve included a couple of recipe ideas that might help make breakfast run a little smoother while you get your tribe together and out the door for school in the mornings. So, speaking of great weather, check out our article about pet-friendly places in the Dallas area where you can sit outside with your dog and enjoy the cooler temps. If you want a single shirt, I can accommodate that. What inspired you to do what you do? In high school I started working at a local t-shirt shop for a schoolclass called “World of Work” that gives high school seniors real worldworking experience in their field of choice. I discovered that t-shirtsare just another creative canvas, and I learned everything from theproduction side. I funded a CD player (does that date me?) for myfirst car by selling fan t-shirts to my fellow high school students whenour school made it to the state basketball tournament. In essence, Istarted “hawking t-shirts from a cardboard box” early. I went to college and worked at another t-shirt shop. After graduating,I spent six years designing collegiate and private label designs as anApparel Graphic Designer for Foot Locker. I loved seeing my designson TV in the stands of nationwide football games, or while walkingthrough malls and airports. So, t-shirts have always been in my past, and with both kids in school I’m back at it with Rita’s Tees.Tells us a favorite story or two about your business. Every t-shirt has a story: whether it is helping a local soccer team withtheir crazy fun team name or designing t-shirts for family vacationsor girlfriend trips. The ideas my customers think up keep me on mytoes! The best projects are the ones where my customers begin with“Do you think you could put that on a t-shirt?”. I can’t appreciateenough the support that my customers/neighbors have provided mein starting this business.4 www.BrentfieldLife.com

Brentfield Life Families of the Month Photo by Kacy PurdueI walked in to a beautifully renovated home on Robin Willow Photo by Kacy Purdue drive, the home of Jennifer and Brian Griggs and their four children. So newly renovated, in fact, that the final touches were in the same circles. But they didn’t start dating until their senior yearstill being done as we met and talked. As I later learned, it’s the second in high school.time the home has been renovated since the Griggs have lived there. But we’ll learn more about their home later. Butroom to room, up and down the stairs, loud as children are when several other girls who had their eyes on Brian also decided to lunchplaying with friends. In the hub-bub, I tried to correctly gather details there that day.on how these two families came to be our Families of the Monthfor this issue—while trying to keep everything straight between two With feelings of disappointment, Jennifer left that day having notpeople and eleven total people (really . . . Brian and Ryan?). yet won Brian’s heart from the sea of other interested girls. But despite having so many options, it wasn’t long before Brian eventually realized I think I’ve got the gist of it put together here for you now. So . . . that Jennifer was the one for him and they started dating, continuingget ready to meet Brian, Jennifer, Maddie, Austin, Benjamin, Ethan, to date through college.Amy, Ryan, Taylor, Anna Kate, and Merritt,. Their collective stories begin years ago when Amy and Jennifer, now the matriarchs of the families, first came to know each other asfriends at Brentfield Elementary. Brian and Amy grew up in churchtogether starting in the nursery at Prestonwood (back when it met atthe location that is now Shelton School). Jennifer and Brian kneweach other also through church, starting in second grade. And Amyand Ryan met later at Prestonwood after almost crossing paths thereseveral times. Confused yet? Brentfield LifeAthlete of the Month What’s your favorite subject in school (your sport doesn’t count!)? My favorite subject outside of athletics is probably math. However, my favorite subject outside of school is truly the love of sports. I love all sports at all levels. I hope one day I can earn a living in some type of sports related field, whether it be sports broadcasting or perhaps sports journalism. It is my passion and it would be a dream to work in it one day. Outside of schools and sports, what do you do for fun, hobbies, work, etc.? I am currently in the work program through Pearce. I have worked in the restaurant industry for the past several months. I am currently working at a new establishment called Twister Street Taco. Working in a restaurant gives me the opportunity to see many people I know and meet new ones too. It has been a great experience thus far. My family loves to travel which has allowed me to see and  experience many great places. One of my favorite trips was for my sixteenth birthday when we took an MLB tour up the East coast. Several stops at stadiums for the first time and ended up in Cape Cod to see the college scout teams in action. It was truly a memory of a lifetime. I also enjoy playing and walking my two dogs, Callie and Bear. How long have you lived in the Brentfield area? I moved to the area eleven years ago when I was in the first grade and have lived here ever since.Kameron HollowellTell us your name, what school you currently attend, and whatyear you are in school. My name is Kameron Hollowell and I am currently a Senior at JJPearce High School in Richardson. What other schools have you attended? I started at Brentfield when I was in first grade and stayed throughoutmy elementary years. I then attended Parkhill Junior High before JJPearce High School.Tell us what sport you play and why you enjoy it. I love to play football. It is a true team sport where everyone on thefield counts. We all have to do our jobs in order to be successful. Iam the starting left offensive guard for the varsity Pearce Mustangs.Part of my job on the field, along with the other o-lineman, is tobuild a wall between the other team and the quarterback so he hastime to make an effective pass or hand-off. If one link in our “fence”breaks, then the quarterback or running back are at risk and that playis wasted. It creates accountability at all levels.Brag on yourself: Tell us your honors and awards in school andfor your sport. I have been fortunate to be honored by our coaching staff as player ofthe week on multiple occasions. Last season as a Junior, I was namedDistrict 9-6A All District Honorable Mention, as well as nominatedto the All City roster. I have also been awarded Academic All-Districttwice while in high school. 16 www.BrentfieldLife.com

Brentfield Life Athlete of the MonthWhat do you love most about living in the Brentfield area? 17 There are so many great things about our area. The location isclose to everything and the families are wonderful. As a matter offact, I met three of my closest friends in first grade at Brentfield andwe are still the best of friends today as Seniors at Pearce. Being inthis neighborhood and school district has afforded me meaningfulrelationships that will last a lifetime.Tells us a favorite story or two about a big moment or funmoment playing your sport. Last year, during the WT White game, Pearce was down 15 pointsin the 4th quarter. We had to score two touchdowns and a two-pointconversion to go into overtime. Pearce pulled together and tied it upwith 30 seconds left to go in the 4th. We were all on an adrenaline highduring overtime where we stopped them on their first drive. Pearcegot the ball, scored a touchdown and won the game in overtime. Itwas a true team effort and memory that will last a long time.Share with us a funny or awesome story of living in the Brentfield area. I am lucky to live just down the street from both Parkhill andBrentfield. My brother, along with my friends, have spent countlesshours on the field playing football, baseball, and basketball at bothcampuses. We were in a safe place, with great neighbors. These are thespecial times that I will cherish from my childhood.Anything else you would love for your neighbors to know about you? It’s my Senior year! Brentfield Life and Linda Ellison by Teri HebertGolden Couple T hey planted the big oak tree in the front yardMike 37 years ago. Linda remembers bringing it home in the trunk of her car. Today the tree is so big that it proudly covers the yard and the house with shade. They’ve watched it grow and change over the years, much like they’ve watched the neighborhood and surrounding area grow and change over the past 38 years of living in their home. Mike and Linda met in 1968 when Mike’s brother fixed them up. Mike (originally from Brookline, MA) was in Dallas from New York, and as it turns out, his brother knew a good match would be made. Mike and Linda (originally from Newton, MA) officially became “The Ellisons” in 1969—recently celebrating 48 years of marriage together. Mike was a CPA and the couple lived in Boston for awhile. Then his job transferred them to Dallas and they moved to the Brentfield home they still live in today. They originally planned to stay in Dallas for only two years. But they fell in love with the area and made the choice to stay. So many years later and they still love their home and the neighborhood. They chose Brentfield at the recommendation of Linda’s cousin who already lived in the area. She recognized that Brentfield was the next “up and coming” area to be in, and she wisely recommended that Mike and Linda choose their home here. With Brentfield Elementary just down the street, and the new Prestonwood Mall close by, they agreed it was the place to be. Linda remembers that in the year that they moved to their house, the second building at Brentfield Elementary had not yet been built. Yet this year, Brentfield has so many students that portable buildings are being used for the first time in the school’s history! When they first arrived in Brentfield, their two daughters, Jennifer (the oldest) and Tracy, were of elementary school age. Both girls had the privilege of going through Brentfield Elementary, Parkhill Junior High, and Pearce High School. Today, Jennifer and Tracy both live close by (one in Frisco, the other in Plano), now with six grandchildren (ranging in age from 13 years old to the twin girls at five years old) between the two of them. In fact, they live close enough that Mike and Linda can pick up the grandkids after school most days of the week. Mike loves having the kids at the house to swim in the pool with him. They enjoy having the kids for sleepovers and both Mike and Linda cherish that they24 www.BrentfieldLife.com
