FOOTBALL COACHING.qxp_Layout 1 10/01/2023 09:58 Page 1 Football Coaching Practices from Grassroots to Academy Ian Tincknell

FOOTBALL COACHING.qxp_Layout 1 10/01/2023 09:58 Page 2 Foreword I have had the pleasure of knowing Ian or the ‘professor’ as he is affectionately known by us, for a fair few years now. His attention to detail and care for the players never waivers. His tactical knowledge is excellent which can be seen across this detailed book, and his sheer love for the game shines through in every single session he delivers. For any aspiring young coach looking to have longevity in the game this collection of training sessions and drills offer a fantastic insight into academy football. Ian’s desire to help the boys within the academy is incredible and it is so refreshing to see a coach who is purely in it for the players and their development. Ian has been a pivotal part of Bristol Rovers FC for a decade and has helped nurture players through to first team and Premier League level. Rain or shine and the ‘professor’ will still be out there with his tactics board giving the same insightful and helpful information to our young players. This book is Ian pouring his heart and soul into what drives him and motivates him, which is to always try to improve and nurture the stars of tomorrow. Ian, a big well done on the book and a huge thank you for what you have given to myself and to this club. Chris Hargreaves Former Academy Manager Bristol Rovers FC Copyright Ian Tincknell 2022 ISBN

FOOTBALL COACHING.qxp_Layout 1 10/01/2023 09:58 Page 5 WARM UP Warm up 1 3 Teams of 4 players Bibs 3 teams of 4 players have their coloured bibs tucked into the back of their shorts: how many opposition bibs can you steel and put into their coloured triangle? If you lose your bib you have to go into one of the corner jails and wait to be released by one of your team mates with a tag on their arm. The released player can collect a bib from their coloured triangle and be back in the game. After a set time, whichever team has the most bibs still tucked in, wins the game.

Players travel with the ball using their hands, look at how they dodge and change direction to avoid being tagged on the arm, if tagged, give the ball to a team mate. After 3 tags the ball goes to the opposition. You score by stopping the ball in the end zone. 2. Set up a circle so the 2 ‘O’s’ can move round the outside to receive 12 players, 8 v 4 with 2 balls. X’s try and roll or throw between the O’s for 1 point, if O’s intercept, can they get the ball to the O’s on the outside of the circle for a point. 3 interceptions wins the game.

If an X is tagged, stand in one of the corners and wait to be released by an X. The 2 triangles in the middle are 5 second safe zones.
