A Letter from the CEO… navypier.com | 5As Navy Pier enters its second century this summer, I want to reflect upon not only the qualities that make the Pier a belovedcivic space to many, but also what makes it the People’s Pier.As a lifelong Chicagoan, I invite locals to embrace the Pier as a cultural destination, welcoming guests from all over the worldand offering uniquely Chicago and ever-changing experiences. This is exactly what architect and urban planner Daniel Burnhamenvisioned when he imagined this space in his 1909 Plan of Chicago… a place of respite where locals and tourists could gatheron the lakefront to escape the bustling city. When Navy Pier became a nonprofit in 2011, it afforded the opportunity to reimagine this lakefront jewel. It also enabled the Pierto better fulfill its purpose as a world-class cultural district that celebrates and showcases the vitality of Chicago year-round.To bring our mission to life, we are always thinking of unparalleled experiences we can provide to the Chicago community. Thissummer we’ll introduce the Performance Lawns in Polk Bros Park, which will serve as platforms for cultural, educational andartistic programming. Marquee free events such as Pier Pride, a family-friendly celebration of the LGBTQ communities; Live onthe Lake! music and dance series in the Miller Lite Beer Garden; and All-Access with Paul Natkin, a photo gallery featuring iconicimages of The Rolling Stones’ most intimate moments and experiences, captured by Chicago native and band photographerPaul Natkin, will surprise and delight guests.Regardless of whether you are from down the street or across the globe, the People’s Pier has something to offer everyone. Ihope that you’ll enjoy reading about the Pier’s programming this summer and will be inspired to visit to create your own lifelongmemories.Welcome to the new Navy Pier!Marilynn GardnerPresident and CEO, Navy Pier

Pier Romance navypier.com | 9I’ve had a long love affair with Navy Pier. Like all lifelong romances, we’ve had our ups and downs. But we’re ready forour second honeymoon, sparked by the reimagining of the Chicago landmark that’s underway, one that you’ll read aboutin this special publication we’ve collaborated with Navy Pier to create.THE CRUSHI met Navy Pier in the summer of 1978, as a high-school student from the suburbs coming with my girlfriend to thisthen little-known and kind-of-decrepit, kind-of-wonderful old place for the brand new ChicagoFest. With sixteenseparate stages featuring an amazingly wide range of music genres, all framed by magnificent views of Chicago’sskyline, it was love at first sight. For this impressionable teen, the breadth of the event’s offerings, the energy of thecrowd and, most of all, the Pier itself instilled an impression of the grandeur of what a city could and should be.THE COURTSHIPOver the next few years, I moved to the city and saw the Pier from time to time, for the art fair or on a bike ride onits then-vacant docks. In 1995, the Pier was reborn in a comprehensive renovation that introduced the Ferris wheel, the Crystal Gardens, the Chicago Shakespeare Theater and a host of restaurants and visitor-friendly shops and foodvendors. It quickly became Chicago’s top tourist attraction, and a place for our special family events—especially whenthe family was from out-of-town.THE SEPARATIONBefore long, the novelty wore off. The Pier seemed so oriented toward tourists that it offered little for us locals. It hadbeen designed like a carnival, with a cascade of overstimulation in every sense, from the foods being sold to the visualcues present in its appearance to the very pacing of the experience. Carnivals may be one of life’s pleasures, but they’re apleasure best consumed in measured doses. And so, like so many long romances, I started to take for granted the Pier’sendemic charms that had so enchanted me once.THE REKINDLINGNow, the Pier is finishing up its centennial celebration with another reinvention. The carnival vibe is giving way to afresh, clean contemporary design, with a major focus on sustainability, that reflects a sophisticated urban milieu. Withbetter restaurants, a major new cultural initiative and, now, an opportunity to buy a cocktail and carry it around with you,it’s become the kind of place you’ll want to visit more regularly. And while it’s still very family friendly, it’s now especiallyinviting to outings without children too. Like a date.On an unseasonably balmy April day this spring, my wife (who is that same girlfriend from 1978) and I decided to rideour bikes over to the Pier. We made our way to the strikingly designed Tiny Tavern which, if it looks like the kind of placeyou’d expect to find in one of Chicago’s trendy neighborhoods, that’s because it is—the original Tiny Lounge has been amainstay in North Center for almost two decades. We ordered a couple of local craft beers to go and walked east alongthe South Dock toward the vast blue waters of Lake Michigan. The further we walked, the thinner the crowds became, until we reached the end of the Pier and grabbed a bench, spending an hour or so sipping and talking and watching thewaters make gentle waves against an infinite blue horizon. What’s not to love about that?Brian Hieggelke Published by Newcity Custom Publishing 2017Editor and publisher, Newcity newcitynetwork.com
