Be Proud of Our Culture: Vidhya, Knowledge, Ancient Indian Ways of Learning Mr. BIJU K.C [Parent of Ghanesh Kumar and Gayathri Biju] Vidhya : Knowledge Who is a student ? A student is the one who learns from various sources of knowledge. In Indian Culture acquiring knowledge or Gyan (Sanscrit) is the ultimate aim of life. Knowing about oneself is the most deepest form of the religious or spiritual life. He/She starts learning before his/her birth itself like’ Abhimanyu ‘ in our great epic Mahabharat. Our Indian Culture is pointing towards the importance of Vidhya which represents all kinds of learning, knowledge and science. Vidhya is worshipped in the name of Goddess Saraswathi, the goddess sitting in the middle of Lotus. Is it possible to sit in a lotus? Yes, it indicates that the Student or the scholar is attaining at the height of such a level that selflessness through the proper knowledge even they can sit in a flimsy lotus. 5 Essential Qualities of a student: Follow it you will succeed in life Students need energy to learn and study the things properly, which clearly indicates that the student should be self disciplined in their life. Those days defined five qualities of student as Kaka cheshta, Baka Dhyanam Shwana Nidhra thadhyva cha I Swalpahari, gruhathyagi, vidhyarthi pancha lakshana II 2. baka dhyanam 4. Swalpahari (should eat less ) - eat less 1. kaka chesta ( try again & again ( study with full con- means an aver- until goal is achieved, like a centration, 3. shwana nidra ( sleep like age diet/meal not so a dog )- so a student is full that makes you crow) like a crane) not lazy and he should feel sleepy & lazy. be always active) Learning Process Learning is a lifelong process and never ending until our life expires in earth. In our ancient times the stages of learning are clearly identified by our ancestors( Sankara charya ) classified as Shravan : Hearing the words of wisdom from your teacher. This is the stage of Reception of Knowledge. It's a passive stage in which the student merely records the words of the teacher. Manan : Recollecting what you learned and eradicating the queries regarding the subject matter by ask- ing questions and using your power of reason. This is the stage of Contemplation of the knowledge. Active stage. Nidhidhyasana : By this stage, the student has eradicated all his queries. Now the truth of knowledge is completely attained by mind in a way that it is cannot be erased. This is the stage of Realization. This goes for both, spiritual and material knowledge. Three basic qualities are essential to success in their learning life of any person and Vallabhacharya classified it as Jigyasa : This means curiosity. This is the first and most significant quality that a student must possess. The student must have desire to know, to learn. Learning should not be mere ladder to success but he must have an inherent, burning desire of being perpetually curious. Amaatsarya : This means non-avarice towards the knowledge of your teacher. A student should not re- gard himself inferior or superior to the teacher. He should respectfully accept the fact that the teacher knows more than him and thus be humble and eager to gain the wisdom. Shravanadar : This means respect for the process of learning. It basically includes the criterion of disci- pline. Being respectful towards the teacher is not enough, a student should also be respectful towards the process of learning. This includes everything from being punctual, completing the given tasks, the way of behaving while attending the lectures and so on. Students are the future of any nation and remembering the words of Swami Vivekananda that “Education is the manifestation of perfection already in men”. Hence think about our existing system of education whether it is enable a person to stand on his own feet, nor did it teach him self-confidence and self- respect. Prerana January 2019
