“ Good schools, like good societies and good families, celebrate and cherish diversity.” - Deborah Meier This perfectly applies to Al Saad Indian School Al Ain. It’s a very short journey of 1 year with school as my son Sharvil got admission for KG2, but in this short duration we realised not only the excellent quality of edu- cation they are providing but also the moral values, insight into various cultures, respecting them, extracurricu- lar activities and many more like this. I really appreciate what Al Saad Indian School is doing for our chil- dren. Initially we were worried, how my son Sharvil will get adjusted in new school, but the transition was very smooth. Even for the bus transport we had very warm experience of personalised care and attention from the staff. I want the special mention of Sangeetha teacher for her love and enthusiasm in children. As a result now my son never wants to miss his school. There is no burden of daily unnecessary exhaustive homework. Sports, personality development, art, cultural programmes all arranged in a very balanced manner. Hereby I also appreciate the story telling competition they are organising for KG classes. Wishing all students and school team members a very bright and successful future. With warm regards, Dr. Kamlesh, Specialist Radiologist, Dubai Health Authority Father of Sharvil Shinde (KG2A).
KIDS AT A SAFETY GLANCE · We do not even recall how many times we hear cases of unfortunate incidents that causes serious injuries and even fatality to kids on daily basis. The misery causes to the family is manifold after the incident and no one can predict how badly it affects them. At times, it could take away their peace of mind throughout life by thinking about silly mistakes that they have done which could have avoided easily and prevented the incident altogether. Most of the domestic accidents are occurred due to the casual attitude of parents as they are mostly in a comfort zone, which gives them false notion that everything is fine, and nothing will happen to their kids. It is always someone else problem until it comes to knock you out!!! Most common statements which we use to hear on daily basis is that we have been doing this way for past X number of years and nothing happened. However, it does not give you any guarantee that it will not happen the next moment. The above statement shows the attitude of many people around us. It is surprising to note that many of us are not even considering kids’ safety as important as other important things in life. What does this word “safety” really means? Safety in personal context is nothing but protecting yourselves and your family from hazards. Are we really recognizing what are the potential hazards around us? Number of unfortunate domestic incidents happens every year in UAE shows that safety is still not in the pri- ority list for many. Not many have forgotten the news of a small child falling from the building balcony in Sharjah and eventually succumbed to death!!! Lack of awareness, pure ignorance and carelessness are some of root causes of the problem. Let us be aware that as per the International statistics, more than 2 million children under the age of 15 experience accidents in and around home every year. Generally, many of the non-fatal injury cases are not reported to Health and Safety Authority and hence, the accurate statistics is not available to understand the crux of the matter. It is much higher than what we hear every day. Are we aware about the most common domestic accidents related to the kids? Falls, Burns, Suffocation, poi- soning, drowning and Electric shocks are some of the most common accidents related to kids. How to prevent injuries in children?? Falls: FALLS contributed 44% of all non-fatal domestic accidents worldwide. Most of these accidents can be prevented through increased awareness and improvements in the home environment. It is important to protect children from these kinds of injuries waiting to happen at home, as these can lead to haemorrhage or concussion, braking of born and other serious consequences. Following are some of the precautions that we could possibly consider to prevent untoward incidents.
• Refrain from leaving babies alone when they are laying on high surfaces and ensure that their beds have protective barriers around them. • Place obstacles or fence guards to refrain them from reaching forbidden areas when they are in their crawling phase. • Ensure that all balconies and windows are closed and do not leave chairs or thing that they can climb next to them. • Don’t leave your child alone in the toilet as he or she might slip and fall • Teach children how to correctly go up and down stairs • Choose a non-slip type of flooring to prevent falls caused by slipping. • Watch out for children’s shoes (this is one of the major contributing factor). • Always wear head protection while riding bicycles . Burns: • Pan and pot handles should be kept away from children’s reach when they are on the stove. • When serving food, parents should ensure that children Do not touch the hot pots and they should not drink hot beverages while they are carrying their children. • Always keep the iron box away when it is still in hot condition after the ironing. Keep the children away while ironing. • Always check the hot water before preparing for bath and should refrain from opening the hot water first. Suffocation: • Never leave the feeding bottle in the mouth while the baby is sleeping. • Parents should not keep the stuffed animals and pillows in the child’s crib before they are one year old. • Children should not be give gum or nuts before the age of four and parents should not keep plastic bags near them as they might put their head in it and accidentally suffocate . Poisoning: • Give only fresh food to children. Always check expiry dates on food bought from stores or mall before giving to children. • Wash fruits and vegetables properly before feeding them. • Store all medications away from children’s reach as they could be mistaken as a candy! • Discard all expired medications away to avoid • confusion. • Keep away all household cleaning products away from the reach of your child.
Drowning: • Never leave your kids alone in swimming pool area. • Give them proper swimming training at the very young age itself. • Report all uncovered manholes, drainage holes etc. in your vicinity to the municipality. Electricity shock: • Parents’ needs to ensure that all power plugs are closed with special plugs and they should refrain from leaving exposed electrical wires. • All broken electrical equipment must be removed from use until its gets repaired. • Teach kids how to use electrical equipment safely and caution them about the consequences of improp- er use. “Accidents are caused and t can be prevented. If we eliminate the cause we will eliminate the accident”. Thanks to the UAE Health & Safety authority for giving continuous awareness to alert the parents. Mind you, your simple negligence could put you in serious trouble in front of law, if proven guilty at court. Let us be proactive rather than reactive!! Safety should not be a choice, but let it be your values! Written by: Ali Orkkatteri Health Safety & Environment Specialist College of Medicine and Health Sciences, UAE University
