MFA GRAPHIC DESIGN THESIS OPPORTUNITIES 41 INSIGHT 03 People are more concerned about parks they have a personal connection to, but many lesser known parks are being underutilized. STRATEGY 03 Encourage people who live within three hours of Congaree National Park to visit it instead of larger parks in order for them to create a personal connection. DELIVERABLE 03 Offsite interactive walls that provide information to encourage people to visit Congaree. Content will be advertising for the app and park, information about the game and what activities are available in the park, and live webcams. Smaller screens with the in-park content will also be available. Additionally, the offsite kiosks will carry Congaree gear that can be purchased in a pop-up style retail shop that is manned on high-traffic days.

MFA GRAPHIC DESIGN THESIS OPPORTUNITIES 43 MOBILE APP 4 pts The prototype app is the main feature for the project, allowing users to keep track of their game score and rank as well as share their stats on social media. The field guide is location based and gives information on what is around the person with additional information about the natural area. The app would also allow users to view the bus schedule and reserve in-park experiences. 50 page prototype app — Will include game screens, maps, motion graphics and field guide. 3 motion graphics :05 – :10 seconds each — Serve as introduc- tions or load screens to the app and the game

44 NATIONAL PARK CONNECT J. RICKS IN-PARK KIOSK 3 pts The in-park interactive kiosk will provide information for those that are already in the park. Content will be park related, such as how to avoid damaging sensitive areas, information about the game/app, and park maps and guides. The user would also be able to reserve experiences and keep track of bus schedules. 15 prototype screens — Informational screens including maps, bus schedules, leaderboards, about the park, etc.

MFA GRAPHIC DESIGN THESIS OPPORTUNITIES 47 IN-CITY KIOSK 4 pts The in-city interactive kiosk will provide information to encourage people to visit Congaree National Park. Content will be advertising for both the park and the app, information about the game, the park, web cam videos, as well as leaderboards and bus schedules. Additionally, the kiosk will carry gear that can be purchased before entering the park and will be staffed periodically by park volunteers. 10 prototype screens — Advertising screens including commercials, web cams, experiences, and gear. Informational screens including bus schedules, leaderboards, etc. 1 video :30 — An advertisement video to get people excited about using the game. Kiosk design — A 3D mock up of the kiosk.

52 NATIONAL PARK CONNECT J. RICKS

MFA GRAPHIC DESIGN THESIS UX DESIGN 53 DESIGN User Experience Before I started refining my screens for the in park wall, I wanted to have a better understanding of what pages there were going to be, and how they would link to each other, so I created a sketch of a user map, which helped me to plan out my screens. With that information in place, I created a computer rough of it so that it was easier to see and read. Photography does not fully capture the experience of walking or kayaking through the park.

MFA GRAPHIC DESIGN THESIS UX DESIGN 55 Users took sticky notes and rearranged them so that the overall functionality made sense. On the left is the digitized version that was made from the experience.

56 NATIONAL PARK CONNECT J. RICKS UX DESIGN Brainstorming Functionality For the brainstorming session, I honestly didn’t see how it was going to change anything, but I trusted the process. I received some excellent feedback and I was able to make some revisions to my page setup and functionality so that it is starting to feel a lot more intuitive to use. There were things that I took for granted in an app that my younger audience didn’t want/or think was necessary and I was able to consolidate sections and take out others. The only thing I wish I had done differently was to work with them individually instead of together, because I felt at times that they were relying on each other and I wonder what different thoughts and suggestions I would have gotten if they were separated.

58 NATIONAL PARK CONNECT J. RICKS UX DESIGN Journey Maps For the journey maps, I chose Cindy and Thurman because they are middle of the pack, and would firmly be in the target audience. I’ve never really done a user journey map before, so it was an interesting process. As I started to think about someone using the deliverables, I started to think about how to make the screens more user-friendly. INSIGHT 1. Users could receive alerts that something was sighted. 2. Phone photography is usually poor, maybe pull from a database of images for notifications. 3. Park map could show locations where sightings happened. 4. A checklist of animals seen in the park that earns badges, or that they “capture” and can use on missions.

MFA GRAPHIC DESIGN THESIS UX DESIGN 59 User Scenario Cindy — Weekend Hiker 31, Human Resources Rep. Cindy has come to Congaree for a weekend hike. She checks the app when she arrives to see if anything interesting has been spotted Path in the park. She finds that a rare bird was seen earlier that morning. Arrive She goes to the location marked on the map, following the direc- 1. Arrives at the park tions the app gives her. She hikes to the location and sees some 2. When she gets to the destination, Thoughts she is able to see the bird, she shares the experience on the app. I’m so excited to see this bird! On her way back out, she stops and picks up the garbage, logging the service on the app and earning a new badge and a high score. Explore Service 3. Goes to location 4. 60 NATIONAL PARK CONNECT J. RICKS INSIGHT 1. Might need multiple walls or for it to be large enough that multiple people can use it at once. 2. A way to sync the information you just researched on the wall to your phone. 3. Notifications or pop up alerts of activities about to start 4. Make sure interactive wall doesn’t detract from going out and connecting with nature.

MFA GRAPHIC DESIGN THESIS UX DESIGN 61 User Scenario Thurman — Urban Dweller 35, Architect. Thurman heard about Congaree at a street-fair and was intrigued by the interactive wall there, so he decides to go see what the park Path has to offer in person. He arrives but doesn’t really know what to do Arrive or expect. He sees the onsite interactive wall at the visitor center 1. Arrives at the park and goes up to it. He learns about the possible activities and decides 2. Uses the onsite kiosk to walk the main board walk. He explores the interactive map and checks the weather before downloading the app to help guide him on his hike. 74 NATIONAL PARK CONNECT J. RICKS DEVELOP Naming My Thesis I thought a lot about the nature of this project and its function. The driving ideas that came forward from my keywords and my thought process was really a merging of technology and nature. I consid- ered where the brand would be used the most, and so I wanted it to look good as an app icon. I started exploring possible names to further give me ideas, I then thought about what made Congaree unique and considered ways to incorporate tech with nature I tried to explore many different ideas and then refine from there.

76 NATIONAL PARK CONNECT J. RICKS DEVELOP Keywords Truth be told, I always struggle with creating keywords, so I wanted to make sure that I was truly representing this project, my ultimate goal, or the audience as I created possible words. I always make sure to do at least twice the required number as well, just to further the possibilities of finding the best ones. I focused on what I really wanted this project to be, how it would influence my audience, how they would feel using it, and what experiences they would have. Ultimately, I landed on three keywords: Interactive, Immersive, and Exploration. I feel like these really capture what the project is about, getting people outside and encouraging them to explore the smaller national parks. I want them to feel fully immersed in the park and the experience, I want them to think about the next time they are going to go to the park to improve their score, or to learn more, and I want them to make a difference in Congaree. This process is pretty familiar now, but that doesn’t mean I don’t struggle with it. I tried to gather a lot of pulls on my Pinterest boards, I wanted to have a lot of inspiration to pull from.

MFA GRAPHIC DESIGN THESIS SECTION 81 “Of the United States’ majestic national parks, some stand out as must-sees for most travelers: Yellowstone, Yosemite and the Grand Canyon all come to mind as bucket-list sites. … Yet there are many other lesser-known parks equally worth your time — parks with extraordinary wild- life and unique natural features that mere thousands of visitors experience annually.” —Stefanie Payne, Photographer and NASA Communications Strategist

82 NATIONAL PARK CONNECT J. RICKS DEVELOP Applying the Visual System For the In Park screens, I did quite a few iterations of them, I made my elements come off of the edge of the screen, and added a lot more imagery throughout while also trying to make sure that the grid was visible. I feel like I really struggled this week, I went through iteration after iteration after iteration trying to simplify my screens until I finally landed on something that I feel has good potential.
