- Read 3 : Oxygen and carbon dioxide Oxygen and carbon dioxide are gases that arenecessary to life. If necessary, animals can go for weeks without food. They can go fordays without water, but without oxygen they will die in a few minutes. Oxygen and carbon dioxide are all around us, but we cannot see thembecause they are gases. Plants use carbon dioxide to help make their food and togive off oxygen in the air. Animals breathe oxygen and give off carbon dioxide. Experiment: You can make carbon dioxide by blowing up a paper bag.If you blow on a candle, the carbon dioxide will help put out the flame that isusing oxygen to burn.Unfamiliar words: to give off = to send out to breathe = to take air
