ABOUT US Savannah Technical College provides a Driver’s Education program in cooperation with the Georgia Driver’s Education Commission (GDEC) that is approved by the Department of Driver Services approved.

Classroom

CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION KEY INFOAll students are required to get 30-hours of classroom training forthe driver's education program. This component consists of instruction in the following topics:Managing Risk When Driving Getting Acquainted with the Vehicle YouUnderstanding Vehicle Space Will DriveNeeds, Natural Laws and Balance The Effects of Distractions, Drowsiness, andStarting, Steering, and Stopping the Emotions on DrivingVehicle Adverse Driving Conditions andTraffic Control Devices & Traffic Laws EmergenciesManaging Risk: Vision & Perception, The Effects of Alcohol and other Drugs onTime & Space DrivingSharing the Road with Others Basic Maneuvers in a Low-Risk EnvironmentCOURSE TEXTBOOK: “HOW TO DRIVE” -THE BEGINNING DRIVER’S MANUAL

Behind-The-WheelTraining

BEHIND-THE-WHEEL & INSTRUCTOR KEY INFO All students are required to get 6-hours of classroom training for the driver's education program.  Lessons are offered in 2-hour time slots on all days of the week per instructor availability All instructors apart of the Driver's Education Program are Department of Driver Services(DDS) certified. Certificates of Completion are only provided when a student has completed both 30 hours of classroom training and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training.

BEHIND-THE-WHEEL| WHAT TO EXPECT Training Session 1:  The instructor will take the student,verify the skills listed above are satisfactory and then begin practice with parallel parking, turnabouts, and a very structured driving route to provide exposure ranging from light traffic to moderate traffic

BEHIND-THE-WHEEL| WHAT TO EXPECT Training Session 2:  When students arrive for the second session, they can expect longer exposure to moderate traffic and introduction to parkways and highways and to apply what was learned during lesson two.

BEHIND-THE-WHEEL| WHAT TO EXPECT Training Session 3:  The final training will include a review of the previous lessons, longer exposure to moderate traffic, and introduction to interstate driving. Note: Students will be practicing entering and exiting off of Interstate 16. Practice with a parent/guardian prior to this lesson is recommended.

SIMULATORS  Upon request, students enrolled in the driver's education program will have the opportunity to receive driver safety training on our driving simulators The simulator is available for use at the Savannah Tech Crossroads Campus, located at 190 Crossroads Parkway, Savannah(Pooler), GA by appointment during our building operating hours, Monday - Friday from 8AM- 10PM Students must be accompanied by a parent or family member 21 years of age of older while practicing on the simulators To sign up, please email: [email protected]

GEORGIA DRIVER'S EDUCATION GRANTSCHOLARSHIPWho Offers The Scholarship?Georgia Drivers Education Commission Who Can Get The Scholarship?The grant scholarship program is open to Georgiaresidents ages fifteen through seventeen who wish tosatisfy the Joshua's Law driver's educationrequirement by completed thirty hours of classroominstruction and six hours of behind the wheel drivinginstruction with an approved instructor. 

SCHOLARSHIP| AWARD PRIORITY LEVELSFirst Priority: Given to grant scholarship applicants who are a child ordependent of a public safety professional or member of theUnited States military killed in the line of duty.Second Priority: Given to scholarship applicants who can demonstrate aneed based on family income.Third Priority: Given to all applicants who do not meet the criteria set forthin the first priority and second priority outlined above.
