ΚΕΝΤΡΟ ΞΕΝΩΝ ΓΛΩΣΣΩΝ NEW SUCCESS The Students JournalPage 4It has been almost a year since refugees from Syria started reaching Greek borders.People are forced to leave their countries as they are unable to supply themselves andtheir families with basic stuff. Many Greek citizens, especially in Lesvos, are helping refugees, providing them withfood, water, clothes and everything else they need. In addition, many of them don’thesitate to open their houses to homeless immigrants, without considering about dan-gers and financial crisis in Greece. Local people in Lesvos are an example of solidarityand bravery to the world. Many famous people from Hollywood were inspired by resi-dents of Lesvos and visited the island in order to help refugees and claimed that theywere impressed by Greek “filotimo” and willingness to offer help to those people whosuffer from the devastating effects of the war. It goes without saying that Greek is-landers send a message to humanity which should be the main focus of interest to eve-ryone’s life and this is the true meaning of solidarity. And as the saying goes, you shallsurely open your hand to your brother, to your needy, and to your poor, in your land. The Nobel Prize should be awarded to those ordinary people who do extraordinarythings.Supervising Teacher: Apostolia DagloudiClass: Proficiency 1

ΚΕΝΤΡΟ ΞΕΝΩΝ ΓΛΩΣΣΩΝ NEW SUCCESS The Students JournalPage 5 It goes without saying that residents of island Lesvos teach humanity what the true meaning of soli- darity is. The Nobel Peace Prize must go to the people of island Lesvos because they cuddle the ref- ugees in a difficult situation. In the first place, not only do refugees live in great poverty but also they need food, water and shelter which is difficult to find. Residents of island Lesvos give them food, wa- ter, clothes and generally speaking what they need. They “fight” to give a breath to thousands of children. A shocking picture will be forever in the history of suffering refugees: A grandmother em- braces a child in her arms and endeavors to feed him. It is a human action of those people to help poor refugees. This is humanity, after all, to help people regardless of their race. A seventy year old man said that if those children have lost their parents in this long insecure journey, people in Mytilene are willing to provide them with homeland, family and education. It is firmly believed that they are ready to provide them with what they want in order to live as children and not as refugees! Where else can you find so philanthropic people? Some of them change wet refugees while some others give them dry clothes and wrap them with thermal pants. The humanitarian action as well as the hu- man sacrifice and the attempts that residents of island Lesvos have done have impressed the interna- tional community. Their help is valuable and makes the difference. Refugees have no choice. YOU DO. TREATING REFUGEES AS THE PROBLEM IS THE PROBLEM! “Recognize yourself in he and she who are not like you and me.” ― Carlos Fuentes A bundle of belongings isn’t the only thing a refugee brings to his new country. EINSTEIN WAS A REFUGEE. For those who’ve come across the seas, we’ve boundless plains to share. “REFUGEES!” Refugees from Syria and other lands had survived deadly sea crossings into Europe. They faced many difficulties during that risky journey, for a better life. The native populations of the Greek Is- lands in the Aegean Sea (and many other external, worldwide, non-profit organizations) have done and are doing anything possible to help the displaced Syrian refugees and make them as comforta- ble as possible, although they themselves have very little to offer, despite being subjected to a severe economic crisis. They have shown their Christ-like behavior with acts of \"filotimo\", love, respect and \"filoxenia\" to those who are total strangers to them! Their acts and sacrifices shall not go un-noticed, because they are significant contributors to World Peace and Stability, and are clear examples of LOVE for others in the world to use and to learn from!Supervising Teacher: Apostolia DagloudiClass: Proficiency 1

ΚΕΝΤΡΟ ΞΕΝΩΝ ΓΛΩΣΣΩΝ NEW SUCCESS The Students JournalPage 6Refugee crisis is a major problem Greece is facing the last few months. Each day some2,000 refugees are arriving on Greece's shores. Most of them have fled the unrelenting civilwar in Syria, now in its fifth year. So after all the help that islanders have offered they areto be nominated for Nobel Peace prize. I think that their rewarding is crucial since thesepeople do everything they can to help these poor, bad treated refugees.First of all, as the refugees get there through the sea , fishermen give up their work to res-cue them not because they were forced but because they wanted to help. At this point I thinkit should be noted that these people are already dealing with their own problems sinceGreece is in the middle of a financial crisis. Moreover it is fair they get the Nobel prize con-sidering that they open their homes to strangers and they risk their lives to save others. Lastbut not least there are ample Greek volunteer organizations that find and give accommo-dation, food, drinks, and clothes to the dispossessed refugees. These actions sent a message of humanity and solidarity all around the world.Supervising Teacher: Apostolia DagloudiClass: Proficiency 1

ΚΕΝΤΡΟ ΞΕΝΩΝ ΓΛΩΣΣΩΝ NEW SUCCESS The Students JournalPage 7 Patras Carnival It is the largest event of its kind in Greece and one of the biggest in Eu- rope. Giant decorated cars, carts and coaches, colorful papier-mâché figures will fill the city streets. A key character is the Carnival King, pre- sented in all his splendor. The Carni- val also has its Queen, who is actual- ly a beautiful young lady on a floral or an artistic float. There is also a night parade, called “nyhteriní po- daráti\", which takes place on Satur- day night, before Sunday’s extrava- gant parade. Thousands of carnival participants organised into groups dance holding torches in the dimly lit streets of the city. The only float par- ticipating is the King’s, and that’s the reason why this parade is called “podaráti”, which means “walking”. Xanthi Carnival over 40 cultural associations participate in the Carnival program and set up their stalls in the streets of the city to wine and dine the guests with plenty of local wine and delicacies. Look out for the custom “To kápsimo tou Tzárou” (the burning of Tzaros) and watch out for the highlight of the Carnival celebrations, the Great Carnival Parade (float parade) on the evening of the final day. Floats with thou- sands of masked revelers fill the streets of the town with music and colors to ac- company the King of the Carnival.Supervising Teacher: Tsiouka EleonoraClass: Pre-Lower 1

ΚΕΝΤΡΟ ΞΕΝΩΝ ΓΛΩΣΣΩΝ NEW SUCCESS The Students JournalPage 8 Tyrnavos CarnivalIf you find yourself in Central Greece during the carnival festive season, you shoulddefinitely attend Tyrnavos Carnival, a “rebellious” little town in the Plain of Thessaly.Pick the team you would like to be part of and party to your heart’s content! Rethymno CarnivalLet’s go to the place where Carnival festivities and Venetian tradition meet. Everyyear in Rethymno , for almost a whole month, the city plays host to a succession of fun-filled celebrations, bringing together locals and visitors who participate in this carni-val because they love to enjoy every moment of their lives. The parade is a spectacu-lar production of pictures and sounds and a strong Venetian influence evident in thecostumes, the carnival floats and the spirit of the carnival celebration. When the carnival festive season is over, the period of fasting until Easter begins. Take the opportunity to enjoy the first day of spring in the nicest way possible, joining in with Clean Monday celebrations - a day of joy and excitement in Greece and one of the most anticipated days of the year! On this day old traditional customs are brought to life again. Take a look at the events all over Greece and make the choice that most takes your fancy.Supervising Teacher: Tsiouka EleonoraClass: Pre-Lower 1

ΚΕΝΤΡΟ ΞΕΝΩΝ ΓΛΩΣΣΩΝ NEW SUCCESS The Students JournalPage 24ADDICTION TO TECHNOLOGYSigns of Gadget AddictionIn recent times, the role of gadgets has assumed many proportions in a teenager's life. For example, i-pads and tabletsexcite him, making him feel like a super hero, dictating his moods and limiting the scope of his enjoyment outside thesegadgets. Gadget addiction, like any other addiction, destroys a child's capacity for achieving his dreams, and in thewhole process transforms him into a lazy, uninterested individual, who sees his gadgets as the only reason for his existenceand happiness. There are some symptoms of gadget addiction which parents should start alert if their children have thesesigns of addiction.1. If he exhibits complete lack of interest in other activities- even his favorite ones like going for a movie or a game offootball.2. If he becomes argumentative whenever the topic of excess gadget time is broached. He might also become offensiveor defensive in his arguments and fail to view the whole issue in an objective light.3. If he becomes excessively sad when he is unable to access his online account and becomes cheerful once he is able to.4. If he starts lying to you about his gadget time. The Appropriate Age for a Mobile In our days, mobile phones are very useful for people. People use mobile phones not only to communicate with each other , but be- cause they can also connect to the internet and find information about different things that trouble them. So it is normal for a child today to have a mobile phone. In my opinion, the most suitable age for a child to have a mobile phone is the age of twelve. In this age children become more responsible and realise how important it is to take care of things. Parents can also find their child wherever they are and call them in an emer- gency. Finally, all the children must be careful when they communi- cate online with their friends and their parents should buy them programmes ideal for their children’s safety. Addicted To Your Cell Phone ? Cell Phone Addiction reflects teenagers’ lifestyle as far as the use and obsession of a cell phone is concerned. In addition to this, cell phones have to do not only with phone conversations but also with texting, watching videos, social media, vid- eo games, and more. Cell phones addiction distracts teens from the real world, and causes negative effects in school work, family relationships, and other responsibilities .Teens are even strongly connected with their phones as they grown up with them. Nowadays, teens use cell phones to avoid dealing with life’s problems. Children hate to feel as if they are not in a group, and they think that without a phone they will feel lonely. However, common cell phone use can become an addiction for some teens. Furthermore, the use of cell phone can be like drugs and alcohol, may act on the reward centers of the brain which contain opiate receptors. People have become so dependent on their phones that they’re practically on it every minute. So in the end cell phones have dominated our culture, so that we can barely call them it “addiction.”Supervising Teacher: Apostolia DagloudiClasses: Lower 1, C Senior 2

ΚΕΝΤΡΟ ΞΕΝΩΝ ΓΛΩΣΣΩΝ NEW SUCCESS The Students JournalPage 25 TV Addiction Some people spend more than an hour in front of the television screen eve- ry day. People do not realize that this habit starts becoming an addiction to them but they think this is something normal as they do not know that it can be very harmful to their health. Nowadays, everyone sees television but mainly teenagers. Teenagers are usually addicted because television tries to be more attractive to them with TV series and movies. When a young person starts watching TV series he cannot put limits on himself therefore he sits in front of a screen all day without realizing that it can cause health problems. Other people turn on television in order to escape from their problems. They watch TV to escape from routine life or stop thinking about a bad day. Watching television is not a bad thing but it would be better if a person has created a healthy relationship with it. Of course, life still has its problems and challenges but teenagers can find pur- poseful ways to invest their time and energy. In conclusion, lots of addic- tions happen without us realizing what we are doing, as we are doing it, and only later do we feel guilty. That means you need to have reminders around you, so they can understand when you start becoming addicted. We are only on this Earth for a short while, and it’s a miraculous gift. Don’t allow your life to seep away through digital distraction. Live consciously by deciding how you want to spend your time. Selfies Addiction Smartphones are addictive. The most characteristic symptom of them is selfies which are posted on a daily basis at social media, mainly from teenagers. So, we should confess that most of us have a big addiction to selfies...but...Why the addiction to them is so strong? Have you ever thought about it? Most of scientists who have searched the issue support that the main cause is that selfies and likes of social media boost our ego and self-esteem and as a result they make us addicted and less insecure.Supervising Teacher: Apostolia DagloudiClasses: Lower 1

ΚΕΝΤΡΟ ΞΕΝΩΝ ΓΛΩΣΣΩΝ NEW SUCCESS The Students JournalPage 26 Computer Addiction Computer addiction is a closely related term to Internet and Videogame addiction. It affects the daily life and disrupts the way we thinkand becomes a disorder for many people and especially teenagers. If we make right use of computers, we can be benefited. For example,we get information as computer is a massive source of information but inmany cases, people become addicted. They believe that they are cooland become “socialized” and they fall into trap that virtual reality is farbetter than real life where people show their real feelings. If someone isblindly affected by the internet or computers as well as TV and cell-phones, he will cause various health or mental damage to himself. Addiction To Video Games Anyone who has experienced knows that video game addiction is real. Although gaming addiction is not yet officially recognized as a diagnosa- ble disorder , there is increasing evidence that people of all ages, espe- cially teens, are facing very real, sometimes severe consequences associ- ated with constantly use of video and computer games. Video games are becoming more detailed, and compelling to a growing international audi- ence of players. With better graphics, more realistic characters, and greater strategic challenges, it’s not surprising that some teens would ra- ther play the latest video game than go out with friends or play sports. Of course, all gamers are not addicts – many teens can play video games a few hours a week, successfully balancing school activities, grades, friends, and family. But for some, gaming has become an uncon- trollable bad habit. Just like gambling and other compulsive behaviors, teens can become so addicted in the fantasy world of gaming that they neglect their family, friends, work, and school.Supervising Teacher: Apostolia DagloudiClasses: Lower 1

It is the city's pride and way of orientating when lost. A stroll at the Thessaloniki seaside is best done in late afternoon – early evening. The city's southwest orientation will reward you with a spectacular sunset and wonderful sky colors. The seaside is also the main, quickest, most beautiful and safest bicycle route through the city. There are numerous cafeterias along the way, if you'd like to have a drink. The whole walk is about 4,5 km and will take you about 1,5 hour if you are not in a hurry. The Thessa- loniki seaside promenade walk is a definite must-do! In summertime evenings, when no- body can stay at home, everybody goes to the sea for a walk, a bicycle ride or a chat. Take a coffee, a beer, an ice-cream or a corncob and do a lazy stroll from the White Tower to the Concert Hall, like a true Thessa- lonican! The White Tower is the most recognizable spot in Thessaloniki. With its distinctive cylin- drical shape, its six storeys and its memory- charged history, it has become the trademark of the city. The tower dates from the period of the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnifi- cent. The Ottomans used this tower as a fort, a garrison and a prison. It has changed many names since its construction. When Thessaloni- ki got free from the Turks, in 1912, the tower was whitewashed as a symbolic gesture of purification and that is how it got its present name. Nowadays, the White Tower is a muse- um. At night, the White Tower gets illuminat- ed and stands out in the dark background. The boulevard below is the favorite beach promenade of the locals.
