run run run stretch run run run Running three miles takes a long time. What does one think about during the 24 minutes it takes to run the distance? Shae Saylor said, \" I picture a wall that I have to break through in order to keep on going.\" Alice Hopkins stated, \" I make up rhymes or songs. I try to focus on anything but the pain.II Debbie Hunter sings anything from Depeche Mode to keep her mind off the distance. Most of the team said they try to think about something else. Kim Taft says she thinks about her homework. Amanda Edmonds said, \" } concentrate on the person in front of me, it's the butt to beat.\" Tamara Przybyla and Brittany Blanchard think about picking up their speed and finishing. Coach Anderson and his girls show their caffree smiles. Alice Hopkins and Tiffany Pinnell laugh, as Mr. Anderson tells them, \"We've just begun.\" Mr. Anderso n leads the team in a round of \"Hallelujah Chorus\". Amanda Edmonds, Debbie Hunter, and Kri sty Richards found little humor in Coach Anderson's statement, \"Three miles down, only two to go.\" 50 Girls Cross Country

These girls can be compared to the mailman; whether sun, rain, sleet, snow, or hail, they continue to run. Speaking of water, Charlotte Richter said, \"1 definately think about water, lots of water.\" There are some drawbacks to running, one can get very tired, hot, and sometimes sick. Jennifer Dewaal sometimes loses control of her bodily functions. Despite the drawbacks, running gives the girls a natural high and none of them said they would give up the experience. Sometimes when it gets hard the girls think,\" I can do this, I've done it before.\" The team will always remember what Coach Anderson told them, \" Run to run, not just to win.\" This dedication is what took them to state. Neither rain nor sleet can stop these golfer~. They practice from the wee hours of the morning to the late hours of night. (NOT!) Most of these baby boomers started golfing at age 8. Many started to golf just for fun, but Ryan Petersen likes it because \"It's cheap to golf.\" You can see these guys struttin' their stuff while practicing their putting or modeling in their spike shoes, green striped shirts and pants with pockets (to hold their golf balls). Later, when these pro's were asked what it takes to be a true golfer, Ryan Shipp was positive that the answer is \"Not to throw your clubs!\" Ryan adds that his strongest point isn't driving the carts for Drivers Ed but is offering \"moral support!\" The future for some of these golfers includes birdies and hole in ones. But, when asked if golf would play a big part of their future, most of them answered with a \"No Way Hose!\" ''I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll blow the ball in,\" says Ryan Petersen as he attempts a blow in one. Many of Hillcrest's games were just like this and barely escaped us. The Hunter game was an up and down race till the very end when it went into a five- minute overtime. Our guys were nervous, Clint Smith and Carlan Reese wanted \"the team to take care of the ball, one mistake and Hunter could capitalize.\" Matt Tullis stated Coach Margetts gave his team words of \"confidence\" and inspiration to \" stay focused and play hard.\" Margetts also told them \" not to play in circles; play in straight lines.\" During the last play in overtime with two seconds left, Jason Williams sunk both of his free-throws to give us the one point lead \"that pulled our team into a fifty-five fifty-four victory\" stated point guard Carlan Reese. \"The crowd's enthusiasm also helped us,\" commented Tyler Borg. escape sweaty bodies pi•n Every day during the wrestling season, there were half naked guys on the floor of the wrestling room. You could catch our varisty wrestling team at work everyday from the beginning of 7th period to 4:30 in the afternoon. They practiced on Saturdays and even on holidays when everyone else was at home. They were up and running laps while most people were sleeping in. Now that's dedication. Coach Swayden worked them hard, and it paid off. They scored many points and made many pins. In a match against Granger, our varsity team strangled their opponents with a win of 61 to 6. The varsity team did a great job this season. Most people don't know how hard it is to be a varsity wrestler. In order to be in the varsity team, they have to wrestle off and win all the people in their weight division. You have to be best in thier weight Everyone else is either J.V. or sophomore. Even when in varsity, they have to watch their weight. Just a quarter of a pound over weight could disqualify them from wrestling that day. Many of our wrestlers went on crash diets to make their division. Try going on a crash diet every week! penalty slide-tackle goal The \"ball boys\" of soccer had their work cut out for them this year. Between penalty kicks and advantage break always, these tough boys on the field have made this season full of thrills and spills. Most of these players began their baby boomin' soccer lifestyles at the age of five or six. They played competition soccer throughout the years then continued through high school. This year they had to adjust to a big change. Paul Moizer, previously Girl's Varsity and Boy's J.V. coach, now heads the Varsity Boy's for the first year. corner kick goalie The boy's J.V. soccer team has had a basically uneventful season except for one exciting occurance on March 24. Sophomore Mikal Aune was on the defense for our team when the ball was kicked over his head toward the goal. He was running against the opponent and when he reached for the ball with his foot he slid, causing his competitor's knees to jam into his back. This blow broke two of his ribs and bruised one of his kidneys. After being out of commission from his favorite sport Mikal is \"very anxious\" to return when he feels up to it. Goalies keep the opposing team from scoring. It must be very challenging to stand there and see the ball coming straight for you and know that if you don't block it, the other team will score and possibly win the game. Our J. Spending many hours in the hot sun may not be someone else's idea of fun, but it's a way of life for these guys. Not to mention it gives them a beautiful farmer's tan. Ouch! Keep those shirts on boys! A great improvement from last year, the team's coach is pushing them to learn self-disciplinary skills. More work and less play makes for a winning season. Coach Smith has had a significant impact on the their motivational drive for success. Being such a young team has its disadvantages and advantages. Saying goodbye to the few seniors such as Stuart Weichers, Mike Bryant, and Mike Boswell will be a hardship that next year's team must overcome. But the rest of the team, including Ryan Burbidge, a freshman, have a great seasons to look forward to. Freshman are nothing new to the program. Following in the steps of Ryan's brother, Garrett Burbidge, graduate class of '91 who also started his freshman year, acknowledges the frustrations and fun of being the youngest on the team. Work became no stranger, time was spent on improving skills and strategy. Payoff came when team statistics went up. Working more on improving as a team rather than as individuals helped pull the team together to make them a whole. Working together seemed to be the key to missing link and pulled the team out of a beginning slump. The season only got better. Boys State David Marion Only three girls and nine boys went to Boys/Girls State from our school this year. Being able to go to these camps is very impressive. Usually only people from the top percentage of the class are selected to go. The people chosen to go have to have great interview skills and must know a lot about current events. They were selected by their applications and by nerve-racking interviews. The boys and girls did not go to the same camp. The boys spent thier week in the dorms of Weber State University, and the girls spent their week in the dorms of University of Southern Utah at Cedar City. At the camps, they learhed about the government and the duties of the various officials in our government system. Though it was an educational experience they also enjoyed it. Their whole week was timed and set up but free time was also given. They had rules and they were strict. They were not supposed to see or even talk to the opposite sex, but the boys reported that they broke the rules and called up the girls around campus and partied with them. They had lots of fun and learned Greg Whitehead, Colby Engstrum, Robert Larsen, Dave Holtby, John Williams, Tony McIllece, Greg Wright, Erik Shupe political participation Girls State many new things about our government system. They said that not only was it a worthwhile experience, but having been there looks very impressive on scholarship applications. Some advice they would give for the people whom would be interested in either Boys or Girls State next year, would be to practice interviewing skills and to learn more about current events. Though it was a week out of their summer vacation, they all thought it was a worthwhile experience and would do it again if they could.
