2018 ASPC Supreme Amateur Kelsey Dahl MICHIGAN’S GREEN MACHINE The road to winning the ASPC Supreme Amateur Award had a roundabout journey for Michigan’s Green Machine (Stinger) and myself. I fi st laid eyes on him at the 2016 Taylor Sale and immediately was drawn to him. I knew I wanted him in my trailer when I headed back to Minne- sota after the sale and got my wish, but not in the way I originally expected. As fate would have it, he wasn’t quite meant to be mine…yet. 14 The Journal • June/July 2019

Then fate would finally catch up and in the summer of 2017 Don Rudeen made him available to me. I felt Stinger was capable to win but wasn’t sure to what level yet so I sent him with Robby and Andrea Barth of Showtime Training Stables. Under their care and nurturing he came on and started doing well. He finally starting hitting his potential for the 2018 show season. Stinger and I showed in a variety of classes including halter, driving, showmanship, and costume. We received the Super Amateur award at Congress along with multiple high-point awards throughout the year. Stinger and I are blessed to receive the Supreme Amateur Award for 2018. Thank you to Showtime Training Center - Robby and Andrea Barth, family and friends, and Don Rudeen for all of their support in helping me achieve my goals. The Journal • June/July 2019 15

2018 AMAHMHRR Supreme Amateur Tanya Smeins-Wright Supreme Amateur AKS ARISTOCRATS INVITATION ONLY I received my fi st pony when I was only 2 years old. My Grandpa bought me Mr. Soxs, a 2 year old green broke stallion. I joke that Mr. Soxs not only taught me how to ride but how to fall. I am not sure if I was born with the love for horses, but I can never remember a time when they weren’t my passion. I spent many years with Mr. Soxs. My favorite thing to do with him was to jump him in hand. I would set up picnic benches in the front yard and he would fly over them. Like many ponies, he was eventually replaced by larger horses. Through the years I rode both Western and English. I will be forever grateful for all the lessons I learned in 4-H. 18 The Journal • June/July 2019

I saw my fi st true Miniature Horse in the late 80’s during a 4-H trip to the National Western Stock Show in Denver, CO. From the moment I met one, I knew that I would have one someday. The following summers I went up to Estes Park and watched the mini shows. In college I was a spectator at several Minnesota shows and Iowa auctions. I planned on buying one right out of college (I even bought a mini van to convert for hauling!). However, my life went a diffe ent direction and I ended up with a yearling Trakehner/Arabian. I trained her completely myself and was able to show her at Sport Horse Nationals. It was still my dream to breed and show miniature horses. I bought my fi st mini, B.T. , in 2005. I learned the basics of showing with him at open shows and State Fairs. I named my farm August Meadows in memory of my grandfather, August, who bought me my fi st pony. Sometimes dreams do not become reality. Personal injury I am thankful for the Amateur Committee’s great awards, followed by the birth of two kids changed my farm plans especially the local show awards that always gave me an extra drastically. When my daughter, Alora, was 4, she was gifted incentive to add another Amateur class at a show. a black 2 year old gelding, AKS Aristocrats Invitation Only, When I applied for the Amateur Performance Award, I felt aka Koal. The following year we returned to showing pushing her to keep competing. I do wish my grandpa could and have been having lots of fun since! see the road he paved by buying that fi st Shetland pony. Sometimes life takes diffe ent paths than the one planned, but sometimes the other road is a wonderful one too! I love showing. My daughter loves showing even more and would show every weekend if she could. We have met so many wonderful people and made many new friends. The judges have always been encouraging. I am very appreciative for the shows in this region that offer a full array of Amateur classes. The Journal • June/July 2019 19

Companion Program Award Hal & Deb Bryant Have you ever stopped to think how important this program is? In the Show ring, we are “Singing to the Choir” - we are showing our horses to each other. But in the AAA Companion Animal Program, we reach out to all the folks who just might join us one day! We think of what we do as: Public Relations. Starting in January, we get calls and book events throughout the year. During Nursing Home Week we are completely booked. Every day we will be taking horses and carriages to give rides to the residents. We take our horses to Schools, Weddings, Parades, Demonstrations and Clinics. We give presentations at the Rotary Club, Kawanis, 4-H Hippology Groups, Vacation Bible Schools and at the Library. If there’s a place we can showcase the capabilites of these incredible little horses, share our knowledge of them and love for them - count us in! The AWARD for participating in the Companion Program is a very nice embroidered jacket but the true REWARD is sharing our time and horses with so many wonderful people outside the show ring. There is nothing like the feeling of giving a ride to a WW II Vet in failing health or a young boy in a wheelchair who both need help from the nurses getting in and out of the carriage but light up as they ride along. Or the 50 year old Security Guard who asks very politely if he can pet the horses and then tells us he has never touched a horse before. Or the lady whose children arranged for us to take her on a ride thru town on her 90th birthday and told us she had not ridden in a buggy since her wedding day! Or the 4-H kids that did very well in their state hippology competition and called to tell us we had helped. We love this program and hope everyone takes the time to share, pay-it- forward and gather all the memories, smiles and giggles that your heart can hold. 26 The Journal • June/July 2019

Companion Program Award Bonnie Youngblood July of 2014, PRF Zoaring Eagle (Zoar) came into my life. Aside from being a cute and sweet 27 little addition to the B bar B Ranch, he has filled my days with many activities and my life with pure joy. The Companion Program provided the direction I needed to discover the many diffe ent ways a miniature horse can enrich your life. Zoar and I have participated in local fun shows, breed shows, AMHR sanctioned shows, County fairs, trail drives, parades and more. Participating in these activities led us to learning, growing and making lots of new friends with the same interests. The spectators at the open breed shows were so welcoming. Many thanked us for bring Zoar and showing them what he could do. Often after a parade, families would find their way to the staging area so they could pet Zoar and have a photo taken with him. Our future plans are to enjoy picnic trail drives, parades, and fun shows with Zoar and his stable mate Morning Star. Yep, they are addictive! We are currently training Star to drive and hope someday to drive them as a team in the Detroit Thanksgiving Parade. The Journal • June/July 2019
