ARTS EDUCATION FOR SCHOOLS: 2017 - a pretty good year... 2017 was a fantastic year for us here at Corban Estate Arts Centre. Each term our Programme has been subscribed to capacity. We have taught more workshops to more students than ever before - 6980 young minds participated in programmes exploring a wide variety of art media and techniques.We developed over 25 different workshops, produced masterclasses, gallery tours, artist studio visits and bespoke art sessions. And because we know you can't bring your students to every different workshop, and because we see some very special things happen in our workshops, we decided to share some of our highlights with you all. Following are some workshop outcomes and a few words on the process from our tutors, Ruth and Eilis.Our new programme for Term 1 2018 is available HERE . And remember if there is a curriculum topic you need supported, an LEOTC week component planned or a specialist class workshop designed just contact us to see how we can help. Thank you for visiting us this year, have a very special Festive Season and a safe and restful summer. We look forward to seeing you again in 2018. Merry Christmas! from the Corban Estate Arts Centre Arts Education for Schools Team. OUR CLASSROOM POU - Term 1Establishing their own classroom as a place of significance, students chose a creature of NZhabitat to represent them on their own classroom pou. Learning to create 3D features with paperwas really embraced!“Each individual student created an animal/creature to contribute towards a finished Pou assembled atschool. In true collaborative nature from concept design, all the way through to the completed segments;

clear communication and negotiation was required between students & teachers, encouragement &space to experience new techniques featured heavily to the great joy of the many who witnessed thework in ACTION” - RW.\"This was an exciting workshop to be part of as energy was really high. It was wonderful to see thecreatures chosen by students did really reflect their personalities - we only spent 3 hours with thestudents, but could really see this.\" - EG MY OWN PICASSO - Term 2Creating profiles using OHP lights was just part of the fun. Students discovered basic principles ofcubism and created portraits using collage and pastel. Back at school some classes created theirown class portrait gallery.“The adults were in awe of the ease of acceptance for this new type of creative thinking in relation tospatial awareness and viewing points and the success of each student’s art piece.” - RW'I remember kids saying, “Is that what my face really looks like from the side?” It was so funny.' - EG

MANU TUKUTUKU -Term 2One of the runaway success stories of our year. Developed initially as an in-school art andtechnology workshop designed to integrate traditional and contemporary methods, the team thencrafted it into a three-hour workshop for our term programme. A lot of consideration was given tothe materials, with the card being purpose-laminated to exacting specifications, and harakekeharvested each night prior to workshop delivery.“It felt good as an educator to incorporate elements from my own art practice sharing the technique,technology and application of the tukutuku stitch and correcting material terminology.The finished resultsof Manu tukutuku (flying kite) coupled with the new knowledge left all attendees richer than they arrived.”- RW

\"Challenging workshop for some students but I enjoyed their perseverance and tenacity to learn the skillsinvolved including the tukutuku stitch.\" - EG COLOURFUL CREATIVE ZONE - Term 3

This workshop was inspired by the wonderful Warren Pohatu work that hangs in the stairwell onthe way up to Opanuku Studio, here at Corban Estate Arts Centre.The students were asked todraw a creature native to New Zealand. The challenge was that the creature had to touch all foursides of a frame drawn on the paper. Landscape – a dominant presence in many students work –was relegated to secondary pattern creation and the bird or fish or insect became centre-stage.Using high-quality materials, the luminous caran d’ache colours made each work a piece of art,the results were bold and spectacular and we sent home some very proud students.“Celebrating Warren Pohatu in an ode to his series of works entitled Mokai Rangatira gave students andteachers alike practical useful aids that encouraged creating creatures of significance and making themthe star of the scene. A few tears were shed in frustration with the sizing (A2 paper stock) but asconfidence grew in each student through the workshop so did the size of the creatures – a beautifulsuccess achieved.” - RW\"This was a fun workshop. Watching the students’ faces when they managed to draw their creatures somuch bigger than they thought possible was brilliant. Often children will only draw from their wrist andstruggle to free up their arms and shoulders to expand their work. This workshop allowed that to happenand they did so well.\" - EG DAWN CHORUS - Term 4 Colour and collage were the champions in this workshop which evolved out of Eilis’ conservation work on Tiritiri Matangi. Simple collage techniques created some spectacular results. “Supporting Eilis in delivery of Dawn Chorus allowed us both to share some beautiful facts about our

Aotearoa based birdlife hopefully encouraging students to start to build a relationship with our natural environment. From these seeds a positive future can blossom.” RW \"It was great to share my love for our birds and their environments with the students and for them to respond so well with such fantastic birds. Each time we did this workshop, we were visited by a veryvocal sparrow who liked to sing louder than the recording of the NZ Dawn Chorus we played throughout the workshop; he was our “live” model.\"- EG and our Masterclasses were a hit too ! Andrew Hall - JUNKCRAFT “The creative thinking and assemblage of found materials into new sculptural works thatoccur in Andrew’s workshops never cease to amaze and astound me. Creating a space of freedom within boundaries whereby students can challenge the ‘normal’ behaviour patterns of themselves by engaging and creating is an area many classroom teachers comment on. ” - RW \"Andrew is always a hit with the students.They love being able to create whatever with whatever ‘found’ objects Andrew brings in.You can virtually hear their brains ticking with discoveries and wonderment.\" - EG Katie Smith - MY VERY MODERN T-SHIRT“With the same materials and instructions on adorning tee’s a full suite of unique individual designs were achieved, it is always a pleasure to assist Katie Smith and the students in this workshop.” - RW

Kairava Gullatz - UNIQUE CERAMIC VESSELS “Discovering how many tools hands can be is crucial to the Clay experience, the joy of students who bring to life a 3D creation alongside the breakthrough of challenges inweights and measure makes every class inspiring for teachers and adults alike witnessing the progress.” - RWSubscribe Past Issues Translate \"It is an honour and a privilege to spend time with the children who come toour workshops. The stories they share with us while creating their artworks are wonder-filled. Some share adventurous ones, others very personal ones and through their art-making we see them flourish. Sometimes tears of frustrationare shared and throughout the workshops we encourage them to work throughthese moments with creative problem-solving. The finished artworks are great, but the growth we have witnessed is priceless.\" - EG MORE INFO: SCHOOL VISITS AND CUSTOMISED BOOKINGSIf you’re interested in finding out more about our Arts Education for Schools programme but would alsolike to share the information with all your fellow teachers please contact us to arrange a meeting at your school.
