BUMP, SPIKE, WIN The oppos ing team serves. Nicole Gardner bumps the ball fro m the back row to Dorothy Simons who sets it up for a spike by Debbie Foster. The spike is blocked, it comes back to Rachael Bentley who sets it for another spike! Volleyball's a fast exciti ng game which requires a great deal of team- work. In order to win the games our team had to be able to fake out their opponent. To do this the team has to set the ball up for the best chances to get a spike or to score in any way possible. ---/ CHARLONIANS ALWAYS UNITE FOR FIRST PLACE Charlonians put on cavewomen outfits, com- plete with feet and clubs, to \"Manhunt\" at pep assemblies and wore the same outfits to per- form in the novelty class at Region. This year girls were constantly upgrading their routines and adding more trophies to the front showcase. We can only mention a few of their accomplishments because of the year- book deadlines but at the time of this article (February 10, 1984) the girls had already won the following awards: A first place at the super- star camp at the U of U: A first place at the B.Y.U. Homecoming parade: A first place in Military division at Alta, and a third place in their dance routine. The Charlonians earned a first place in all three categories at Region and State (Military. Dance and novelty). Congratulations on a job well donel 133

5, 6, 7, DANCE 1983·84 brought with it many opportunities and memories for Jordan High's Performing Dance Company. We started out the year by going on a \"Manhunt\" in the opening assembly. later we let everyone know that it was \"Far from Over\" as we performed in the night rally. We continued through the year performing in all of the class assemblies and holding workshops. With the begining of the New Year. preparations for our Spring Dance Concert Began. As guest choreographer John Mead began to rehearse his creation \"Cubicles.\" dismay fil · tered through the company. Rehearsals began at six in the morning and required a maximum amount of effort. As the many dances began to pull together. other obstacles fell in our way. \"I want 10 lbs. off now.'' was the cry.lt was dreadful. Yet our pock· etbooks had no problem losing weight because of the needed costumes. We found ourselves sav· ing every penny we could get our hands on. May third approached. 5. 6. 7, Dance began to become a reality. Dances of all styles and nation· alities were pushed into our brains. Technique was crammed and flexib ility was forced through our tight joints. The tedious early morning rehearsals and ag i· tat ion of long hours all seemed worthwhile as the concert successfully went up and the company celebrated their success at the annual Dance Company Dinner Dance. The Choral Department rose to 139great heights durmg the 83-84 schoolyear. Madrigals, Acapella, and SwtngChoir all participated in a big array ofvaried programs. Madrigals performed everywherefrom the \"Salt City Jail\" to a World-wide Broadcast from Temple Square tobe presented at Christmas time thenext season. Madngals were in de-mand throughout the valley and evenhad to turn down a number of singmgengagements durmg their ·ChristmasSeason. A California tour was the center ofexcitement for most Madrigals andsome Acapella members. Singing en-gagements were made for Disneyland,Magid Mountam, and the Los AngelesTemple. Other places to visit were TheOueen Mary and The Spruce Goose.Catalina Island. Las Vegas, and CtrcusCircus. One of the most challenging andoriginal fund raisers done for the tourwas a Rock-a-thon held at CrossroadsMall. All partiCipants collected spon-sors and then rocked 1n rocking chatrsfor ten hours to receive the wellearned money. Numbers increase in this year's Aca-pella have caused great pleasure forchoral director, Mr. Zabriskie. Mr. Za-briskie also commented on the enthu-SiaSm of the group and how they wereto work with. They dtd well in all thetrperformances; one highlight bemgthetr Temple Square Contest. A Swing Choir was also establishedat Jordan this year. It started out verysmall but gradually picked up. Mr. Za-bnskie is hopmg that 1t will cont mueand become a constant program. All three groups at Jordan Htghworked hard to make the year suc-cessful. Numbers and performancesare growing year by year to make theJordan Choral Department one of en-thusiasm and pride.THIS PAGE TOP LHT Members of the SwmgChorr were Front Row · Brent Col<, Ryan elson.Terry Wallace. \1\athew keener. The Dixie Land Band is a new group this year. The DLB. the Orchestra. and the Jazz Band played in many concerts for charity and fund raising events to earn money for their trip to California this year. The Music Makers was a booster club for the Music organization. DEBATE \"Resolved That the United States should establish uniform rules governing the procedures of all criminal courts in the nation\"-was the topic for the 1983-84 debate program. During the year the stu- dents had an excellent opportunity to learn and argue the good and bad points of the American judicial system. Some students went so far as to state they gave their speeches m the1r sleep with such memorable utterances as. \"What makes you think your plan will work?\" or \"It's not the cars that kill people, it's the drunken nut behmd the wheel.\" Students m the forensic program com- peted in the areas of impromptu, oratory. extemporaneous speaking and student congress against many other schools in the state, some many t irnes larger than Jordan. Jordan's Model United Nations coun- tries were France and Libya. It was inter- esting to finally have a country where a student could serve on the security coun- cil. Many students earned recognition in the National Forensic league and earned their letters this year, proving that the debate program is making its mark among schools.
