That must bewhy the girls basketball teamwas such a success. Therewere no \"best\" or no ··worst\"players on the team. All contri·buted to the winning reputa·tion. There were many talentedseniors on the squad this yearand all of them have earnedtheir letter in basketball and, orother sports. Trisha Marchant, who has been on the team allfour years, averages I 0 pointsper game. Another senior, thestarting guard, Terri Hardingwho dons uniform # 13, has anall game high of 35 points. Theteams starting forward, a threeyear varsity player, Tony But·kovich is a needed asset to theteam who brought an averageof 6 points per game. But theseniors were not the only onesaspiring to great heights.Coach Hunter commented thatDebbie Foster a sophomorewas doing well in reboundingand averaged 8 points pergame. Their daily after schoolpractices payed off and com·bined with the determinationand friendship of the teammade this season a success. Kathy Taylor leaves South behind. Brenda Miller out lasts the defence. 149
Girl's Tennis Goes To State With the first showing of autumn leaves, others made their appearance as Jordan's future Chris Everts hit the courts. Instructed by Coach Hal Hale, the Girl's Tennis Team held organized practice daily with the main objec· tive of developing technique, spin, and speed along with good ball sense and consistancy of stroke. The Junior· dominated team competed in weekly matches with five other schools in preparation for the region meet which was held on October 7, 1981. As a result of this meet, four out of the five varsity positions qualified for and competed in state competition at BYU. Shauna Bills, se<:ond doubles; Kersten Muthre1ch, third singles; Lon Clayton, first doubles: Laura Lake, se<:ond doubles; Carolyn Hardcastle, second smgles, Karen Muthre1ch, first singles. Each spring a mixture of girls from all grades turn out for gymnastics. Only a handful make the team but those few girls are the top in Jordan high and the state This year's team was no different. Guided by Mrs. Price and Mrs. Bauer, our team vaulted, flipped, and tum· bled through a season of stiff compt competition. With strong spirit and a ton of drive these spry, young, future olym· pians have earned thier wings as Jordan gymnists Marci McCaffree and Debbie Kokkala strike graceful poses while performing on the beam. Seniors Combine Citizenship With Scholarship When you mentioned thename \"Sterling Scholar\", mostpeople thought of someonewho actually studied in the li·brary, digested the Webster'sInternational for lunch and readPoetry during the State basketball game. This was an under·standable misconception whenconsidering this group of out·standing high school seniors. Sterling Scholars werepicked not only on a basis ofscholarship but also citizenshipand community service. Scholarship, Citizenship, And School Service What does the word \"hon· or\" mean in the organization called Honor Society? \"Hon· or\" comes from the scholar· ship, citizenship, school ser· vice, and community ser· vices stressed in the club. The 45 members of the 1981·82 Jordan High Chap· ter of the National Honor So· ciety not only strived to maintain their grade·point averages and perform the functions of the club, but also took time out from their rigorous schedules to throw a Get·Acquainted party, par· ticipate in the traditional In duction Banquet, perform a community service project, and to gain new friends. The determination and dedication of the members to their school and to their community had their own special way of bringing \"honor\" to the Honor Soci· ety. TANYA MIDDAUGH NANCY JOHNSON NANCY JOHNSON Beetdigger photographers do much more than just take pic· tures of students, stomps, and football games. A lot of their free time is spent roving the countryside looking for beauti· ful scenery and unusual sights. They find that photography is an excellent way of expressing themselves, and their photo- graphs reflect their personal· ities. Some pictures are wild and moody while others are pic· turesque and serene. It all de· pends on who is looking through the lens.162

Sandy New And Remodeled164
Are you looking for a place tospend the long weekend? Sick ofregular, everyday life? Just needto get away? Come to exciting, downtown Sandy, Utah. Sandy isfull of exciting places to see andthings to do. Go to a movie at theConsolidated Starship Theaters,or play electronic games nextdoor at the \"Live Wire.\" That'swhere the action's at. Video andelectronic games are very popularand are also the hungry mouthsfor quarters freely spent by teen·agers. If movies and games aren'tyour favorite past times and eat·ing is, Sandy has got them all. Trythe newest places: Rax, offeringfast food roast beef sandwiches,or China Seas, a more relaxed, family type restaurant. Another exciting place to see inSandy is the new post office. Theold post office was too small andparking was grossly congested. Need to pick up a loaf of bread?mouth wash? deodorant? Stop inat the new, bigger, better Albert·sons. The old Albertsons was overcrowded and getting worn down.A move was made closer to GrandCentral, offering more space andefficiency. So if you just can't see sittinghome bored, get out and enjoybeautiful, intoxicating Sandy City. 165

Academics is often ne·glected. However, academicsubjects form the major partof our school. English, histo·ry, math and science aresubjects which have morevariety and fun than mostpeople imagine. You cantake classes from basicmath to calculus, from sci·ence composite to physics, and from 9th grade englishto humanities, and learn justabout anything. This year, the physics class had a newtoy, the laser, which pro·vided them with the oppor·tunity to learn about optics, and have fun at the sametime. They made holograms, and even transmitted soundwith it. Debate, coached byMr. Rawlings, did well thisyear, and the students wereexcited about the new pro·gram. They look very prom·ising for the next schoolyear, too. History was inter·esting, because it gave you achance to learn about greatmen and events of the past, and how they affect our lifetoday. Finally, math waseven more important nowthan in the past, because ofthe ever increasing use ofcomputers in our society, for jobs and personal use.M1k1• Tob1n, Larry Ray.
