INJURY EVALUATION AND DIAGNOSIS ➢ DIAGNOSTIC PROCESS – must only be done by a medical doctor. • He / She accounts all the information needed to see a holistic picture of the cause and severity of the injury such as patient’s history, comprehensive physical examination, special tests, and diagnostic tests (e.g., MRI, X-ray), among others. ➢ EVALUATION PROCESS – can be done by a coach or an athletic trainer. • It is to rule out the presence of a severe injury or a life- threatening condition, how to transport the patient, and the appropriate first aid while transporting the patient. ❖ PRIMARY SURVEY – This is a quick evaluation if there are life-threatening injuries present. CONCUSSION OR TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY - Caused by a strong blow to the head that temporarily impairs brain function. 2. CARDIAC ARREST - Abrupt loss of heart function in a person who may or may not been diagnosed with heart disease. 3. SHOCK - Life-threatening condition that occurs when the body is not getting enough blood flow. Physical Education and Health 11 | 3

ROSARIO INSTITUTE Module 6: Lesson 6 Rosario, Cavite Sports Injury Management Founded 1946 HOW COULD A LIFE-THREATENING CONDITION BE DETERMINED? ✓ UNCONCIOUSNESS ✓ NOT BREATHING ❖ CARDIO-PULMONARY RESUSCITATION - Technique incorporates chest compressions and rescue breaths to facilitate blood flow to the brain. MANAGEMENT OF ACUTE INJURIES ➢ SECONDARY SURVEY - is to determine the primary injury, severity, muscle function, and joint stability, as well as the location and mechanism of injury or the movement or force that caused the injury. ➢ INSPECTION OR OBSERVATION PROCESS - is a passive component of secondary survey which is usually performed visually and manually. DULL - This is a deep ache felt in an area, but typically doesn’t stop you from daily activities. 2. SHARP - When a person feels sudden, intense spike of pain. May also fit the descriptors cutting and shooting. 3. RADIATING - Caused by medical conditions that affect the nerves in your body. ▪ This results in travelling pain that spreads from the original point to a larger area of the body. ❖ SPLINTING - Often used to stabilize a broken bone while the injured person is taken to the hospital for more advancement treatment. MANAGEMENT OF CHRONIC INJURIES ➢ BLEEDING - Also known as hemorrhage, or simply blood loss, is blood escaping from the circulatory system form damaged blood vessels. ▪ TOURNIQUETS - are effective in controlling blood loss but it is only performed as a last resort when bleeding has not stopped through conservative strategies.- Physical Education and Health 11 | 5

ROSARIO INSTITUTE Module 6: Lesson 6 Rosario, Cavite Sports Injury Management Founded 1946 ▪ WOUND CLEANING - is important to prevent infection. ✓ The process should remove foreign contaminants and dead tissues. The best way to clean the wound is with running water because the pressure pushes the dirt and other materials out of the wound. ✓ Do not use alcohol. Instead, use iodine povidone, which is a good antiseptic that does not stimulate pain. In addition to wound cleaning, a dressing may be placed on the wound to prevent contamination. CAN HEAT STROKE LEAD TO SHOCK? ➢ HEAT STROKE - is the most severe form of heat illness.
